Problems with the water pump: symptoms, cost and affected models
We have documented 37 faults with the water pump in 37 engines, affecting 246 models of car in our database. The most important by severity and frequency: thermostat and water pump failure (BMW M54), loosening of the water pump pulley and accessory belt failure (1.2 / 1.4 / 1.8 i-VTEC) and fragile water pump (and expansion tank or heat exchanger, depending on displacement) (1.4/1.6 VTi). At an independent garage, the repair costs from €300 to €1,500 depending on the engine or car.[1][2]
How it works and why it fails
Water pump
The water pump moves coolant through the engine and the radiator. It can be driven by the timing belt or the auxiliary belt, or be electric. Over time its seal starts to leak, and on some engines the plastic housing or the impeller fail sooner than expected.
What to do
If the coolant level drops, there are traces of dried fluid around the pump or the temperature rises, have it checked as soon as possible: overheating can damage the head gasket. If the pump is driven by the timing system, always replace it together with the belt.

Problems with the water pump by engine
From most to least important (severity × frequency). Each page details the affected versions and years, symptoms, cost and how to check for it.
- 1High severityFrequency: CommonBMW M54Thermostat and water pump failureThe M54's thermostat, housing and water pump contain plastics that become brittle and fail. If left unattended, overheating can warp the aluminium cylinder head. It is advisable to replace them together.Appears at around 129,000 km
- 2High severityFrequency: Common1.2 / 1.4 / 1.8 i-VTECLoosening of the water pump pulley and accessory belt failureOn the Civic VIII built between 2008 and 2010, the water pump pulley can work loose and break the accessory belt, with loss of power steering and battery charging; Honda documented it as a technical notice for those production years.
- 3High severityFrequency: Common1.4/1.6 VTiFragile water pump (and expansion tank or heat exchanger, depending on displacement)Yes: fiches-auto.fr describes a fragile water pump in both the 1.4 VTi (with an expansion tank prone to leaks) and the 1.6 VTi (with the heat exchanger), a cooling problem that the turbocharged 1.6 THP inherits from this naturally aspirated version.
- 4High severityFrequency: Common1.6 THPFragile water pump and heat exchangerYes: both the naturally aspirated 1.6 VTi and the turbo 1.6 THP share, according to fiches-auto.fr, a water pump and a heat exchanger described as fragile; in the most serious cases, the resulting overheating has gone as far as damaging the cylinder head.
- 5High severityFrequency: Common3.0 TDI V6Failing water pump and cooling system leaksOn the 3.0 TDI the water pump can fail and, from 2010, overheat to the point of damaging the engine (the A6 C6 guide cites a service action). Owners also cite coolant leaks from hoses, the regulating valve and the cooler.
- 6Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalBMW N20Electric water pump failure (BMW campaign in the US over fire risk)The N20 has an electric water pump whose connector can suffer ingress of blow-by liquid; a short circuit can cause local overheating and, very rarely, a fire. BMW recalled 720,000 vehicles in the US in 2024, not including the European Union or Spain.
- 7Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalOM654Leak in the vacuum-operated coolant pump (overheating risk)Mercedes-Benz recalled vehicles with the OM654 and OM656 engines because the vacuum-operated coolant pump can lose its seal between the coolant circuit and the vacuum circuit, with a risk of overheating and, in the worst case, fire.
- 8Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalOM656Leak in the vacuum-driven coolant pump (fire risk)Mercedes-Benz recalled OM654 and OM656 diesels built between 2017 and October 2021 because the vacuum-driven coolant pump can lose its seal and, in individual cases, a fire risk cannot be ruled out. The remedy: replace an electric valve and update the software.
- 9High severityFrequency: Occasional1.6 EcoBoostCoolant loss from hoses, water pump or expansion tankYes: there are owner reports of coolant leaks or consumption from hoses, the water pump or the expansion tank (for example a Ford Mondeo losing a litre a week), separate from the cracked cylinder head. If not dealt with, it can end up overheating the engine and leading to that more serious fault.
- 10High severityFrequency: Occasional1.6 TDITiming belt and water pumpThe 1.6 TDI drives its timing with a toothed belt. It is common for the water pump to be changed together with the kit: if the pump seizes first, it can drag the belt with it, with a risk of breakage and serious cylinder head damage.Repair (garage): €400–€1,500
- 11High severityFrequency: Occasional1.4 HDiTiming belt and water pumpThe 1.4 HDi uses a timing belt (with an additional short chain on the 16-valve version), and Fiches-Auto documents some of its failures, along with the water pump, at around 100,000 km. We have not found the manufacturer's official change interval in a reliable source.
- 12High severityFrequency: Occasional1.2 TDITiming belt, water pump and high-pressure pumpOn this engine, a single toothed belt drives the camshaft, the water pump and the common-rail high-pressure pump. If the water pump seizes, it can drag the belt with it and cause it to jump a tooth or break, with the risk of serious engine damage.Repair (garage): €400–€700
- 13High severityFrequency: Occasional1.4 16v and 1.6 MPI/FSITiming belt and water pumpThe 1.4 16v and the 1.6 MPI (BSE/BSF) drive the valvetrain with a toothed timing belt, and in many of these engines the water pump is driven by that same belt. If the pump seizes, it can drag the belt until it jumps a tooth or snaps, with the risk of the valves hitting the pistons.Repair (garage): €400–€700
- 14High severityFrequency: Occasional1.4 TDITiming belt and water pumpThe 1.4 TDI drives its timing with a toothed belt; on the unit-injector generation, that belt and its camshaft also drive the unit injector pumps. It is advisable to change the water pump along with the kit: if it seizes first, it can drag the belt with it, risking breakage and serious damage.Repair (garage): €400–€700
- 15Medium severityFrequency: Common1.2 and 1.4 TSIWater pump and thermostat housing leak (EA211)On the 1.2 and 1.4 TSI EA211 the water pump is integrated into the plastic thermostat housing; over the years it can crack or lose its seal and the engine slowly loses coolant. Caught in time, it does not damage the engine.Appears at around 80,000 km
- 16Medium severityFrequency: Common2.0 TDICoolant loss from the water pump or the coolersMany 2.0 TDI engines lose coolant. On the 150 hp EA288 the water pump is usually the culprit and, more rarely, the cylinder head; on the 140 hp EA189 the typical causes are the oil cooler or the EGR cooler.
- 17Medium severityFrequency: Common2.0 TSI / TFSIThermostat housing leak and water pump failureSince Volkswagen integrated the water pump impeller into the thermostat housing, this plastic part leaks coolant over time; on the oldest units, with a separate belt-driven pump, failures of the pump itself are also documented.
- 18Medium severityFrequency: CommonBMW N52 / N53Electric water pump and thermostat failureThe N52's plastic electric water pump cracks or fails sooner than a mechanical one, and the thermostat usually goes with it; it is recommended to replace it as a precaution at around 80,000-100,000 km.Repair (garage): €350–€600Appears at around 80,000 km
- 19Medium severityFrequency: CommonBMW N54/N55Electric water pump and thermostat failureThe electric water pump on the N54 and N55 fails without warning, at around 100,000-150,000 km, and is usually replaced together with the thermostat. If not dealt with, the engine overheats.
- 20Medium severityFrequency: Common1.0/1.2/1.4 EcotecWater pump and thermostat leak or wearA reliability report describes the water pump as "the clearest weakness" of the Opel Adam, and the same component - along with the thermostat - often fails or leaks coolant on the Corsa, Astra and Meriva with this engine too, sometimes at low mileage.Repair (garage): €300–€760Appears at around 22,000 km
- 21Medium severityFrequency: Common1.4 TurboCoolant leak from the water pump or thermostat housingOn the Astra J, Mokka, Meriva B and Zafira Tourer with this engine, owners frequently describe coolant leaks from the water pump or from the plastic thermostat housing, with loss of level and a risk of overheating if not dealt with in time.Repair (garage): €350–€550Appears at around 28,000 km
- 22Medium severityFrequency: Common1.0 VVT-iCoolant leak from the water pumpThe water pump is the second most cited fault on the first-generation Aygo, C1 and 107 (2005-2014): between 16% and 24% of the fiches-auto.fr reviews mention it, although it does not appear in the more limited data for the Peugeot 108.
- 23Critical severityFrequency: Rare2.2 TD4 / SD4Timing belt failure and water pump failureThe 2.2 is an interference engine: if the timing belt breaks, serious damage is likely. The water pump is driven by the belt, so they are replaced together. Totalrenting sets the change at 125,000 km or 10 years.
- 24Medium severityFrequency: Occasional1.0 TSI / 1.5 TSICoolant leaks from the water pump and thermostat moduleOn the EA211 the water pump and thermostat housing form a plastic module that, over the years, can crack or lose its seal and cause a slow loss of coolant. Keep an eye on the level: if it is ignored, it can end in overheating.
- 25Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalAudi 3.0 TFSI V6Leak at the thermostat housing and water pumpTechnical guides cite coolant leaks from the plastic thermostat housing and from the water pump of the supercharged 3.0 TFSI, and Audi also replaced the thermostat in a 2015 campaign. You notice it by falling coolant and, if ignored, by overheating.
- 26Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalBMW B58Water pump and thermostat module (thermal management) leakOn the B58 the water pump and the thermostat module (thermal management) can leak coolant, with a low-level warning and traces of fluid at the back of the engine. Guides place pump failures between 75,000 and 120,000 miles and module failures from around 40,000.Appears at around 120,000 km
- 27Medium severityFrequency: Occasional1.25/1.4/1.6 Ti-VCTThermostat, water pump and coolant lossYes: there are testimonials of coolant consumption and loss in the Ford Fiesta, including one case of coolant in the spark plug wells of the 1.4, as well as thermostat and water pump failures documented across the Ti-VCT range.
- 28Medium severityFrequency: Occasional2.2 CDI (OM646)Leak and premature failure of the water pumpOn the 170 hp version of the OM646 (the highest-output one, 2006-2009), the water pump appears as one of the faults owners cite most, along with leaks from the radiator, hoses and thermostat, according to a specialist French source.
- 29Medium severityFrequency: Occasional1.6 and 1.8 Ecotec 16vCoolant loss through the thermostat or water pumpOwners of the Insignia A with the 1.8 of this engine describe thermostat replacements at 30,000 and 65,000 km, and owners of the Astra H with the 1.6 describe water pump problems; in both cases it results in coolant loss that should not be ignored.Appears at around 30,000 km
- 30Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalPorsche V8 and V6 (Cayenne and Panamera)Water pump leak or failure on the V8The V8's water pump appears as a weak point in owner reports and in a German workshop, which talks about a plastic impeller that can break; YOUCANIC considers it reliable and points out that the rubber seal behind it fails. There is little data and it is contradictory.
- 31Medium severityFrequency: Occasional1.2 TurboPremature water pump wearSeveral owners document a bearing noise in the water pump and its replacement at around 75,000-80,000 km, for about €500 in one case reported in France. We have not found an official Toyota campaign for this reason: we treat it as wear, not a defect acknowledged by the manufacturer.Appears at around 75,000 km
- 32Medium severityFrequency: Occasional1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 VVT-iWater pump leak or premature failureYes, in a minority of 1.6 and especially 1.8 VVT-i units: the water pump can start to lose coolant or wear out earlier than expected, in one documented case already at 50,000 km. It is a repair of moderate cost, not a defect that prevents safe driving if detected in time.Appears at around 50,000 km
- 33Medium severityFrequency: Occasional1.6 Dual VVT-iWater pump leakYes, mainly on Auris I and Corolla Sedan units from before 2009 (before Valvematic): the water pump shaft or pulley can develop play and cause a coolant leak. It is a known wear item with a moderate repair cost, not a defect that stops you driving safely if it is caught in time.Appears at around 90,000 km
- 34Medium severityFrequency: Occasional2.0 and 2.4 VVT-iWater pump failure on the 1AZ and 2AZ enginesThe water pump on the 2.0 VVT-i (1AZ-FE) and the 2.4 (2AZ-FE) appears in testimonials and articles as a part to watch: it can lose coolant and, if ignored, end in overheating and a head gasket failure.Repair (garage): €350–€450Appears at around 85,000 km
- 35Medium severityFrequency: Occasional1.8 T 20vWater pump failureThe water pump is another documented weak point of the 1.8T: a 180 hp Audi TT had to have it replaced twice, at 110,000 and again at 130,000 km. Coolant leaks "in several places" are also described on a Passat with this engine.Appears at around 110,000 km
- 36High severityFrequency: Rare1.5 BlueHDiWater pump sprocket slipping and belt misalignment (2026 recall)In 1.5 BlueHDi engines built between October 2025 and February 2026, the water pump sprocket can slip and misalign the timing belt, causing a loss of power or the engine stopping. Stellantis replaces the water pump kit free of charge in about 2.5 hours.Repair: €0
- 37Medium severityFrequency: Rare1.2 Dualjet and 1.2 VVTWater pump pulley fixing (2013-2014): recallOn cars with the 1.2 engine built in 2013-2014, gebrauchtwagenberater.de documents a possible insufficient fixing of the water pump pulley which, if it comes loose, can cause overheating; it describes this in connection with the Suzuki Splash.
