1.6 HDi engine (DV6): faults and reliability

PSA/Ford 1.6 HDi, e-HDi, TDCi and BlueHDi (DV6) · Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Ford, Volvo, Mazda, MINI, Opel and Toyota

It is an efficient diesel, but its 16-valve versions (2004-2011) have a serious weak point: the turbo is starved of lubrication by carbon deposits from the oil, often made worse by leaks at the injector washers. The 8V engines (from 2010) improved, although you need to watch the 2010-2011 belt and the injectors, and on the BlueHDi the AdBlue tank.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

Which 1.6 HDi versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • 1.6 HDi 75/90 16V (DV6BTED4 / DV6ATED4, 2004-2011)

    2004–2011 · 75–90 hp · DV6ATED4, DV6BTED4, DV6UTED4, 9HX, 9HV, 9HW

    With caution

It shares with the 110 the risk of turbo failure through lack of lubrication and leaks at the injector washers. Worth buying only with a complete oil history and, if the turbo has been replaced, with the lubrication pipe and circuit cleaning done.[2][3][15]

  • 1.6 HDi 110 16V DPF (DV6TED4, 2004-2011)

    2004–2011 · 109–110 hp · DV6TED4, 9HY, 9HZ

    With caution

It is the version with the most complaints in the family (turbo, injection, EGR, DPF and dual-mass flywheel). It is only worth it with demonstrable maintenance and, if the turbo has already been replaced, with the complete cleaning procedure documented on the invoice.[2][6][15]

  • 1.6 HDi / e-HDi 112/115 8V (DV6C, 2010-2015)

    2010–2015 · 112–115 hp · DV6C, DV6CTED, 9HR

    With caution

More reliable than the 16V engines on the turbo, but you need to check PSA's action on the belt (units from October 2010 to September 2011) and whether the 2011-2014 Continental injectors were replaced.[5][7]

  • 1.6 HDi / e-HDi 92/95 8V (DV6D, 2009-2016)

    2009–2016 · 92–95 hp · DV6D, DV6DTED, 9HP

    Buy

According to the testimonies collected by Fiches-Auto, the 92 hp is clearly more reliable than the other outputs; with correct maintenance and the belt up to date it has no specific serious faults documented.[15][16]

  • 1.6 BlueHDi 75/100/120 (DV6FE / DV6FD / DV6FC, 2013-2019)

    2013–2019 · 75–120 hp · DV6FC, DV6FD, DV6FE, DV6FCTED, DV6FDTED

    With caution

The mechanics derive from the 8V engines, but the AdBlue system is its main source of faults; check that there are no emissions warnings and whether the car falls within Stellantis's extended warranty.[8][13][17]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

Known faults of the 1.6 HDi

Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).

  1. 1High severityVery frequentFrequency: Very frequentTurboTurbo failure through lack of lubrication (carbon deposits and union filter)On the 16-valve 1.6 HDi/TDCi engines (2004-2011) the turbo can seize because carbon deposits from the oil clog the mesh filter in the union that feeds it. It is a serious, repeat fault: if only the turbo is replaced without cleaning the circuit, it fails again.Repair (garage): €700–€1,050
  2. 2High severityVery frequentFrequency: Very frequentTimingTiming belt failure and premature wearOn the 8-valve 1.6 HDi/e-HDi 112/115 built between October 2010 and September 2011 the belt could break and leave the car stranded. PSA covered the repair and in 2014 preventively replaced the belt and crankshaft sprocket on those that had passed 120,000 km.
  3. 3Medium severityVery frequentFrequency: Very frequentEmissions controlAdBlue tank and pump fault (1.6 BlueHDi)The 1.6 BlueHDi engines (2013-2019) suffer from the AdBlue tank defect of Stellantis diesels: an emissions warning appears with a countdown until starting is prevented. Replacing the tank, with the integrated pump, costs over €1,000 (price in Spain), but there is an extended warranty of up to 8 years.Repair: €1,000–€1,200
  4. 4Medium severityCommonFrequency: CommonInjectionLeaks at the injector washers and carbon build-up in the cylinder headIt is common for the copper washers of the 1.6 HDi injectors to stop sealing: the engine blows gases, carbon forms around the injector and soot gets into the oil. It is cheap to repair, but if left it contaminates the oil and is one of the causes of turbo failure.Repair (garage): €110–€310
  5. 5Medium severityCommonFrequency: CommonInjectionJerking and injection faults on the 1.6 e-HDi 112/115 (Continental injectors)The 112 and 115 hp 1.6 HDi/e-HDi built between late 2011 and February 2014 can jerk and turn on the engine warning light because of an internal electrical defect in their Continental injectors. PSA covered their replacement depending on age and mileage.
  6. 6Medium severityCommonFrequency: CommonEmissions controlAdditive-fed particulate filter (Eolys cerine): depleted additive and cloggingThe DPF on the 1.6 HDi and BlueHDi works with an additive (cerine) that runs out at 80,000-120,000 km and has to be topped up for around €100-120 (price in Spain). With a lot of town use the filter clogs and the warning appears; if it is left, a new DPF costs around €1,500.Repair (garage): €100–€1,500Appears at around 80,000 km
  7. 7Medium severityCommonFrequency: CommonEmissions controlDirty EGR valve and EGR cooler leaksThe 1.6 HDi EGR valve gets dirty easily, especially in town use, and causes jerking and stalling at idle. On the 8V engines the EGR cooler also fails, consuming coolant with no visible leaks.

What the 1.6 HDi is

The 1.6 HDi belongs to the DV family, developed jointly by PSA and Ford following the agreement announced in 1998, and was built at Trémery (France) and at Ford plants in Dagenham (UK) and Chennai (India). It is a four-cylinder of 1,560 cc with common rail injection and a turbo that debuted in 2004 and was sold as the 1.6 HDi or e-HDi at Peugeot, Citroën and DS, 1.6 TDCi at Ford, 1.6D or D2 at Volvo and 1.6 CD at Mazda, as well as in the MINI Cooper D.[1][4][10][11]

The first generation (2004-2011) has a 16-valve cylinder head with a belt and a short chain between camshafts. The 90 hp has a turbo with reference 49173 and the 110 hp a variable-geometry Garrett, with a dual-mass flywheel and, in its Euro 4 variant, a particulate filter. This stage concentrated the turbo and injector leak problems, and PSA went as far as covering turbo seizures outside the normal warranty.[3][4][11][12][15][18]

In 2010 the second, Euro 5 generation arrived, with an 8-valve cylinder head, piezoelectric injectors on the 112 hp, a revised turbo and a DPF as standard; in 2012 it received a variable-flow oil pump and lower-friction oils. Its known faults are a batch of defective belts (2010-2011), Continental injectors (2011-2014), EGR and DPF. Autopista also reports a 2011 recall of some 1.4 and 1.6 HDi over the crankshaft and the oil sump, which affected few units.[4][5][19][20][21]

From September 2013 PSA turned it into the 1.6 BlueHDi (75, 100 and 120 hp) for Euro 6, with SCR and AdBlue in addition to the additive-fed DPF, and gradually replaced it with the 1.5 BlueHDi. The BlueHDi engines share the AdBlue tank problem that Stellantis covers with an extended warranty.[8][9][13][22][23]

Technical data[4][6][10][11][12][13][14]

What changed between versions

  1. 2004–2011

    1.6 HDi 75/90 16V (DV6BTED4 / DV6ATED4, 2004-2011)

First generation, launched in 2004: 16-valve cylinder head and two camshafts, with a belt from the crankshaft to the exhaust camshaft and a short chain between camshafts. The 90 hp uses a different turbo (reference 49173) instead of the variable-geometry Garrett of the 110; there is also a 75 hp variant.[2][4][11][12][18]

  2. 2004–2011

    1.6 HDi 110 16V DPF (DV6TED4, 2004-2011)

Higher-output version of the first generation: Garrett GT1544V variable-geometry turbo and dual-mass flywheel (the 90 hp has a solid flywheel). The Euro 4 variant (9HZ) has a particulate filter, which on PSA diesels works with an additive.[11][12][15][24]

  3. 2009–2016

    1.6 HDi / e-HDi 92/95 8V (DV6D, 2009-2016)

8-valve variant of 92 hp and 230 Nm that replaces the 90 hp 16V, with a DPF as standard for Euro 5; it received the same 2012 update (variable-flow oil pump and lower friction).[4][16][20]

  4. 2010–2015

    1.6 HDi / e-HDi 112/115 8V (DV6C, 2010-2015)

Arrives in early 2010 to meet Euro 5: 8-valve cylinder head and a single camshaft, seven-hole piezoelectric injectors, a combustion chamber 10% larger, lower compression, a lower-inertia turbo and a DPF as standard. The e-HDi 115 adds Stop & Start and, from September 2012, a variable-flow oil pump and lower-viscosity oils.[7][19][20][25]

  5. 2013–2019

    1.6 BlueHDi 75/100/120 (DV6FE / DV6FD / DV6FC, 2013-2019)

Euro 6 evolution rolled out from September 2013: it keeps the 8-valve base and adds an SCR catalyst with AdBlue injection (17-litre tank) ahead of the additive-fed particulate filter. The 120 hp produces 30.6 mkg (about 300 Nm).[9][10][13][22]
