Problems with window regulators and central locking: symptoms, cost and affected models
We have documented 113 faults with window regulators and central locking in 110 cars. The most important by severity and frequency: multiplex electrical system and hands-free card faults (Renault Laguna II), overheating of the front electric window switch (fire risk) (Toyota Corolla X) and overheating of the driver's master window switch (Toyota Urban Cruiser). At an independent garage, the repair costs from €150 to €250 depending on the engine or car.[1][2]
How it works and why it fails
Window regulators and central locking
Electric window regulators use a motor and a mechanism of cables or plastic guides that break with use; central locking depends on actuators in each door and on the comfort control unit. They are annoying rather than serious faults, but very common on some models.
What to do
If a window drops crooked, makes a noise or stops halfway, the mechanism is usually broken even though the motor works. If a door will not open or lock with the remote, first check the key battery and then the actuator for that door.
