2.0 TDI engine: faults and reliability

Volkswagen 2.0 TDI (EA189, EA288 and EA288 evo) · Volkswagen, Seat, Škoda and Audi

It depends on the generation. The EA189 (2008-2015) is the dieselgate engine: it needed a software update and has a record of EGR, particulate filter, turbo and injection faults. The earlier pumpe-düse (unit injector) engine has oil pump failures, and on the EA288 and EA288 evo (from 2012) the known faults are minor: coolant leaks and the odd AdBlue tank.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Which 2.0 TDI versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • 2.0 TDI pumpe-düse unit injector (EA188, 2003-2010)

2003–2010 · 136–170 hp · AZV, BKD, BLB, BRE, BKP, BMN, BMR, BMA, BMM

    With caution

Caradisiac points to numerous cases of a weak oil pump on the 140 hp 2.0 TDI, and MotorReviewer attributes to a defect in the pump shaft failures that start with the turbo. Check the oil pressure and the history.[4][11]

  • 2.0 TDI common rail EA189 (2008-2015)

2008–2015 · 84–177 hp · CBDC, CFFD, CAAC, CBAB, CFFB, CFHC, CFHD, CAGA, CJCA, CBAC, CAHA, CBBB, CFGB, CFGC, CGLC

    With caution

Worth buying if the emissions update has been done and, on 2009-2011 units, the diesel pipe campaign, and if there are no symptoms of EGR, particulate filter or turbo problems. Caradisiac finds it hard to recommend the Audi A4 2.0 TDI of this era because of its reliability problems.[3][12][13]

  • 2.0 TDI EA288 (from 2012)

since 2012 · 110–240 hp · CRBC, CUNA, CUPA, CRLB, CRMB, DFEA, DFEB, DFFA, DFGA, DDAA, DFCA, CUAA

    Buy

Caradisiac picks it as the best diesel in the third-generation Audi A3. Its most cited fault is coolant loss from water pump leaks, easy to keep an eye on before buying.[5]

  • 2.0 TDI EA288 evo (from 2019)

    since 2019 · 115–204 hp

    Buy

Caradisiac considers the cylinder head and injector problems of earlier generations to have been overcome in the Golf VIII. The only warning is that the AdBlue tank can give trouble and may have to be replaced.[6]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

Known faults of the 2.0 TDI

Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).

  1. 1Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalLubricationOil pump failure on the pumpe-düse 2.0 TDIOn the pumpe-düse 2.0 TDI (2003-2010), especially the 140 hp, there are numerous cases of an oil pump that does not provide enough pressure. If lubrication fails, the first thing to break is usually the turbo.
  2. 2Medium severityFrequency: Very frequentEmissions controlManipulated emissions software (dieselgate) and the subsequent updateThe 2.0 TDI EA189 (2008-2015) had software that reduced the EGR outside type-approval tests. Volkswagen fixes it free of charge with an update of about 30 minutes, which is not mandatory to pass the ITV (Spain's roadworthiness inspection, similar to the MOT) and whose long-term effects are still under discussion.Repair: €0
  3. 3High severityFrequency: OccasionalInjectionHigh-pressure pump, injectors and diesel leaks on the EA189On the 2.0 TDI EA189, the high-pressure pump can shed metal particles that force the pump and injectors to be replaced. In addition, 2009-2011 units were recalled for diesel leaks from the high-pressure pipes.
  4. 4High severityFrequency: OccasionalTurboTurbo with seized vanes or premature failureOn the 110 and 140 hp 2.0 TDI engines, the vanes of the variable-geometry turbo get dirty and seize and the engine loses power. On some 140 hp units the turbo has failed before 70,000 km.Repair (garage): €1,000
  5. 5Medium severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlDirty EGR valve and EGR cooler leaksThe 2.0 TDI's EGR valve often fills with carbon, especially with short journeys, and causes smoke and loss of power. On the EA189, the EGR cooler can also lose coolant.Repair (garage): €100–€300
  6. 6Medium severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlClogged particulate filter or faulty pressure sensorThe 2.0 TDI's particulate filter clogs if the car mostly makes short journeys, because it never gets to regenerate; sometimes the fault is just the differential pressure sensor. Cleaning it costs around €200 and replacing it, €800 to €3,000.Repair (garage): €800–€3,000
  7. 7Medium severityFrequency: CommonCoolingCoolant loss from the water pump or the coolersMany 2.0 TDI engines lose coolant. On the 150 hp EA288 the water pump is usually the culprit and, more rarely, the cylinder head; on the 140 hp EA189 the typical causes are the oil cooler or the EGR cooler.

What the 2.0 TDI is

The 2.0 TDI is the Volkswagen Group's family of four-cylinder diesels of 1,968 cc (81 × 95.5 mm), with a 16-valve cylinder head, two camshafts driven by a timing belt, and a turbo. It debuted in 2003 in the Touran with pumpe-düse unit injection (EA188 series, with codes such as BKD, BKP or BMM) and in 2008 moved to common rail with the EA189 series to meet Euro 5.[1][8]

The EA189 uses piezo injectors (230 to 1,800 bar), a particulate filter, a cooled EGR and, below the crankshaft, a balance shaft module that incorporates the oil pump. It was built in Salzgitter, Chemnitz, Polkowice and Győr, with power outputs from 84 to 177 hp.[1]

Its successor, the EA288, has been built since 2012 and is fitted to, among others, the Golf VII, the Audi A3 and the Leon III. It keeps the same bore and stroke and the balance shafts, raises injection pressure to 2,000 bar, uses a dual-circuit EGR and, for Euro 6, adds an NOx storage catalyst or SCR with AdBlue. It produces from 110 to 190 hp, and 240 hp in the twin-turbo version.[7][9]

The EA288 evo was presented in 2018, debuted in the Golf 8 and also reached the Leon IV: from 115 to 204 hp, mild hybrid versions, injection of up to 2,200 bar and twin AdBlue dosing across two SCR catalysts for Euro 6d.[10][14][15]

In Spain there are 683,626 cars from the group with EA189 engines affected by the software that falsified NOx emissions; on the 2.0 TDI the fix is a free ECU update. Volkswagen and Germany's KBA maintain that the EA288 has no illegal devices, although German courts have handed down contradictory rulings.[7][12][16]
