Frequently asked questions
What is a recall?
It is a campaign in which the manufacturer asks the owners of certain vehicles to take them to an authorised service centre to inspect or replace a part with a defect that affects safety or emissions. The work is free of charge for the owner.
How do I know whether my car has an outstanding recall?
The manufacturer usually notifies owners by letter. If it has not reached you (for example, because you bought the car second-hand), ask at any authorised service centre of the brand, quoting the vehicle identification number (VIN), which appears on the registration certificate and the technical data sheet. Some brands also let you check on their website using the VIN.
Is it compulsory to have a recall carried out?
It is strongly recommended: it fixes a defect that can affect your safety or that of others. In some serious campaigns, such as those for certain Takata airbags, the manufacturer even asks you not to use the car until it is repaired. If you are selling the car, it is advisable to have any outstanding campaigns done.
