BMW M54 engine: faults and reliability

BMW M54 (M54B22/M54B25/M54B30) · BMW

The BMW M54 (2000-2006) is a naturally aspirated petrol inline-six with a reputation for longevity, passing 200,000 km if maintained. Its weak points are the crankcase ventilation valve and the plastic cooling system; check that they have been renewed.[1][2][3]

Which BMW M54 versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

Known faults of the BMW M54

Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).

  1. 1High severityCommonFrequency: CommonCoolingThermostat and water pump failureThe M54's thermostat, housing and water pump contain plastics that become brittle and fail. If left unattended, overheating can warp the aluminium cylinder head. It is advisable to replace them together.Appears at around 129,000 km
  2. 2High severityCommonFrequency: CommonCoolingCracked expansion tank and coolant leakThe plastic expansion tank degrades over the years and eventually cracks. It is cheap compared with the cost of overheating an M52/M54, and age matters more than mileage.
  3. 3Medium severityCommonFrequency: CommonLubricationCracked crankcase ventilation valve (CCV) and oil consumptionThe M54's CCV valve (oil separator) is made of plastic and cracks with age: oil then gets into the intake, consumption rises and a rough idle and smoke appear. It is the engine's most frequently cited weak point.Appears at around 96,000 km
  4. 4Medium severityCommonFrequency: CommonLubricationOil leak from the valve cover gasketThe M54's valve cover is made of plastic and, over the years, warps and stops sealing: oil leaks, a burning smell, oily spark plugs and misfires appear. It is replaced together with the gasket.
  5. 5Medium severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalOtherWorn VANOS O-ringsThe seals in the VANOS (variable valve timing) system harden with heat and synthetic oil: the engine loses power below 3,000 rpm and the idle becomes rough. It is fixed with a seal kit.Appears at around 129,000 km

What the BMW M54 is

The M54 is a BMW petrol inline-six, built between 2000 and 2006 as the successor to the M52 and later replaced by the N52. It has an aluminium block and cylinder head, twin camshafts with two single chains and double VANOS, and a DISA variable-length intake manifold.[4][5]

It was offered in three capacities: M54B22 (2.2 l), M54B25 (2.5 l) and M54B30 (3.0 l), with between 170 and 235 hp. It was fitted to the 3 Series E46, the 5 Series E39 and E60, the X3 E83, the X5 E53 and the Z4 E85, among others.[4][5]

With proper maintenance the sources describe it as a very durable engine; most failures are attributed to lack of maintenance rather than design defects.[2][6]
