Problems with the fuel pump: symptoms, cost and affected models
We have documented 24 faults with the fuel pump in 24 engines, affecting 188 models of car in our database. The most important by severity and frequency: low-pressure fuel pump failure: loss of power and fire risk (2.0 and 2.5 Hybrid), high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failure (BMW N54/N55, BMW N13 and BMW N20) and injection pump or injector failure (2.2/2.5 dCi). At an independent garage, the repair costs from €250 to €2,000 depending on the engine or car.[1][2]
How it works and why it fails
Fuel pump and high-pressure pump
The low-pressure pump brings fuel from the tank and the high-pressure pump compresses it for the injectors. On common rail diesels, a high-pressure pump that wears out can shed metal particles and contaminate the entire injection system, which multiplies the cost.
What to do
Hard starting, loss of power, stalling or the car cutting out while driving are the usual warnings. Fill up at trusted stations and change the fuel filter on time. If the pump has shed particles, the workshop must also clean or replace the injectors and the pipes.

Problems with the fuel pump by engine
From most to least important (severity × frequency). Each page details the affected versions and years, symptoms, cost and how to check for it.
- 1Critical severityCommonFrequency: Common2.0 and 2.5 HybridLow-pressure fuel pump failure: loss of power and fire riskYes: a low-pressure fuel pump with a defective impeller (Denso) affects millions of Toyotas and Lexuses, including Corolla, C-HR, RAV4 and Camry models with these engines. It can cause loss of power or stalling, and in the EU there is also a risk of leaks and fire on 2018-2022 Corolla, C-HR and Auris models.
- 2High severityCommonFrequency: CommonBMW N54/N55High-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failureThe N54's high-pressure pump is one of its best-documented failures: most units will have had it replaced at some point. It warns of itself with long cranking and loss of power; the 2010 campaign was US-only.
- 3High severityCommonFrequency: Common2.2/2.5 dCiInjection pump or injector failureThe 2.2 dCi's common rail injectors fail fairly often on the X-Trail and Almera, with cases of seizing and leaks; on the Almera with the older YD22DDT, the documented fault is in the injection pump electronics, not the injectors.
- 4High severityCommonFrequency: CommonVW 2.0 TFSI EA113Wear of the high-pressure pump cam followerYes: the 2.0 TFSI EA113's high-pressure fuel pump is driven by the camshaft through a follower (tappet) that wears; if it wears through it can damage the pump or the camshaft, so it should be checked and replaced as a preventive measure.Repair (garage): €250–€900Appears at around 90,000 km
- 5Critical severityOccasionalFrequency: Occasional1.8 TDCiBreakage of the timing belt or of the high-pressure pump's belt (running in oil)Yes: the 1.8 TDCi combines a dry belt for the camshafts with a second belt, running in oil, that drives only the Delphi high-pressure pump. If the tensioner fails or replacement is neglected, the engine can cut out suddenly or suffer serious internal damage.Appears at around 110,000 km
- 6High severityOccasionalFrequency: Occasional1.5 BlueHDiSeizure of the high-pressure pump and injection systemSome early 1.5 BlueHDi engines have suffered seizure of the Bosch high-pressure pump, with juddering or the engine stalling on the road, sometimes before 50,000 km. The repair means replacing the entire injection system and the fuel tank.
- 7High severityOccasionalFrequency: Occasional2.0 TDIHigh-pressure pump, injectors and diesel leaks on the EA189On the 2.0 TDI EA189, the high-pressure pump can shed metal particles that force the pump and injectors to be replaced. In addition, 2009-2011 units were recalled for diesel leaks from the high-pressure pipes.
- 8High severityOccasionalFrequency: Occasional1.5 dCiDelphi high-pressure pump that sheds filings and damages the injectionOn the first 1.5 dCi engines (up to approx. 2010), especially the versions with Delphi injection of 65, 70 and 85 hp, the high-pressure pump can shed iron filings that contaminate the whole circuit and destroy the injectors. The pump, injectors and rail all have to be replaced.Appears at around 60,000 km
- 9High severityOccasionalFrequency: Occasional1.3 MultijetInjector and high-pressure pump wear from contaminated fuelThe Bosch injectors and the high-pressure pump of the common rail system are sensitive to poor-quality fuel or fuel with condensed water. With contaminated diesel they can generate metal shavings that damage first the pump and then the injectors themselves.Repair (garage): €600–€1,200
- 10High severityOccasionalFrequency: Occasional1.3 TCeBlown fuel pump fuseOn the Renault Captur II and Clio V with the 1.3 TCe engine, a 20-amp fuse can blow and leave the car without an engine. According to L'argus, in April 2021 this fault still had no factory fix; the official service centre's diagnosis includes checking, and sometimes replacing, the catalytic converter.
- 11High severityOccasionalFrequency: Occasional1.7 CRDiHigh-pressure fuel pump failureThe common rail system's high-pressure pump can fail at around 80,000-100,000 km, with hard cold starts, an uneven idle and power loss; if ignored, there is a risk of metal debris contaminating the rest of the injection system.Repair (garage): €650–€2,000Appears at around 80,000 km
- 12High severityOccasionalFrequency: Occasional2.0 DTI and 2.2 DTIVP44 injection pump and air mass meter failureGerman Wikipedia documents recurring failures of the Bosch VP44 injection pump and the air mass meter in the early years of this engine. An owner testimony for this engine describes the pump being replaced at 192,500 km, at a cost the owner calls «prohibitive».
- 13High severityOccasionalFrequency: Occasional2.0 BlueHDiInjector and high-pressure pump wearThe injectors and the high-pressure pump on the 2.0 BlueHDi are among the documented faults, although in a minority of the cases recorded compared with AdBlue or the DPF. When the pump fails, metal particles can contaminate the whole circuit and make the repair far more expensive.
- 14High severityOccasionalFrequency: Occasional1.2 TDITiming belt, water pump and high-pressure pumpOn this engine, a single toothed belt drives the camshaft, the water pump and the common-rail high-pressure pump. If the water pump seizes, it can drag the belt with it and cause it to jump a tooth or break, with the risk of serious engine damage.Repair (garage): €400–€700
- 15Medium severityCommonFrequency: Common1.6 THPHigh-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failure on the turbo versionsThe high-pressure pump that feeds the direct injection of the turbo (THP) versions can fail. MINI, which uses the same block in the Cooper S, extended the warranty on this part in 2010 to 10 years or 192,000 km for 2007-2009 models in the US, without the need for a recall.
- 16Medium severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalBMW N13High-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failureThe high-pressure pump that feeds the N13's direct injection can fail. English Wikipedia generically documents several cases of extended-warranty replacement within the Prince family, with no specific figures or N13-specific recall.
- 17Medium severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalBMW N20High-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failureThe high-pressure pump that feeds the N20's direct injection (High Precision Injection) can fail, especially on high-mileage units, leaving the car with hard starting, jerking or, in the worst case, unable to start.
- 18Medium severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalSkyactiv-GMicro-cracks in the fuel pump impellerBetween October 2017 and May 2020, Mazda built Mazda3 and CX-5 units with a fuel pump whose impeller can crack, swell and end up cutting off the fuel supply with the engine running; the manufacturer recalled the affected cars.
- 19Medium severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalVM Motori 2.8 and 3.0 CRDWear of the injectors and the high-pressure pumpThe injectors and common-rail pump of the 2.8 and the 3.0 V6 CRD can wear with the years: the sources place it between 120,000 and 180,000 km and describe it as loss of power or limp mode, not a widespread failure.Repair (garage): €800–€1,400Appears at around 120,000 km
- 20High severityRareFrequency: RareMIVEC gasolinaCracked fuel pump cover with fuel leak on the ColtOn the 2010-2011 Colt the cover of the fuel pump unit could crack and let vapour or fuel escape from the tank; there was a recall: 64 cars in the United Kingdom according to the DVSA and about 1,348 according to Gebrauchtwagenberater, which speaks of the tank sender unit.
- 21Medium severityRareFrequency: Rare1.6 EcoBoostHigh-pressure fuel pump failureThere is at least one documented case of high-pressure fuel pump failure in a Ford Mondeo, at 82,500 km and already outside the 5-year warranty; we have found no further cases suggesting it is a widespread fault in this engine.
- 22Medium severityRareFrequency: Rare1.6 16v HR16DE / H4MIsolated case of engine stalling due to the fuel pumpOne account from the Nissan Note (first generation) with this engine describes the car stalling while driving because of a fuel pump failure. It is an isolated case among the accounts consulted, not a repeated pattern.
- 23Medium severityRareFrequency: Rare1.0 TCe / SCeFailed high-pressure fuel pump (isolated case)Fiches-auto.fr documents one case of a failed high-pressure fuel pump on a Nissan Juke II with the 1.0 DIG-T at 18,000 km, leaving the car immobilised. The source itself states that it sees no general trend.
- 24Low severityRareFrequency: Rare1.0 and 1.4 BoosterjetDirect injection and fuel pump: no documented faults or recallsWe have not found any recall or pattern of failures of the high-pressure pump or injectors on the 1.0 or the 1.4 Boosterjet, unlike other small direct-injection turbo engines from other manufacturers.
