2.2 TD4 / SD4 engine: faults and reliability

This is the 2.2-litre diesel of the Freelander 2, the first Evoque, the 2014-2015 Discovery Sport and the Jaguar XF 2.2D. The sources consulted do not describe it as a problematic engine, but they point to three things: the EGR cooler, the DPF in urban use, and replacing the belt along with the water pump.[1][2][3]

    Same points to verify; on fiches-auto the Evoque SD4 gets mixed ratings (4 positive reviews and 5 with reliability complaints, mainly about the gearbox, not the engine).[2]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

What the 2.2 TD4 / SD4 is

Land Rover introduced this 2.2-litre diesel in the Freelander 2 (2006-2014). Wikipedia describes it as a PSA DW12 engine, while PMM calls it a Duratorq developed with PSA. The same block was used in the Evoque, the 2014-2015 Discovery Sport and the Jaguar XF.[4][5][6][7]

In the Freelander 2, Wikipedia cites the 150 hp eD4, 160 hp TD4 and 190 hp SD4 versions. The Jaguar XF had variants of 163, 190 and 200 hp; the Discovery Sport, 150 and 190 hp.[4][5][6]

These engines were replaced by the Ingenium family: in the Discovery Sport from late 2015, according to Wikipedia. That family has its own page.[5]
