1.2 PureTech engine (EB2): faults and reliability

PSA / Stellantis 1.2 PureTech (EB2) · Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Opel, Fiat, Jeep, Alfa Romeo, Lancia and Toyota

The belt-driven 1.2 PureTech (2012-2025) has a problem acknowledged by Stellantis: the oil-bath timing belt can degrade, block lubrication and, on the 2013-2018 turbos, damage the brake servo vacuum pump. The 2014-2023 turbos can also use oil. Stellantis offers 10 years or 180,000 km of cover; the chain-driven generation (from 2023) no longer uses that belt.[1][2][3][4][5]

Which 1.2 PureTech versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • 1.2 VTi / PureTech naturally aspirated 68-83 hp (EB2, EB2F, EB2FA..., from 2012)

    since 2012 · 68–83 hp · EB2, EB2F, EB2FA, EB2FB, EB2FAD, EB2M, EB2D, EB2FD, HMZ, HMR

    With caution

It has the same oil-bath belt and Stellantis includes the naturally aspirated engines built between June 2012 and June 2022 in its measures, but the recalls over the brake vacuum pump only affect the turbos. It is a reasonable buy with maintenance invoices and the belt measured or replaced.[1][3][8]

  • 1.2 PureTech turbo 110 and 130 hp Euro 6.1 (EB2DT, EB2DTS, 2013-2018)

    2013–2018 · 110–130 hp · EB2DT, EB2DTS, HNZ, HNY

    With caution

It combines the three documented problems (belt, brake vacuum pump and oil consumption from carbon on the piston rings) and many units have already passed the 10 years of Stellantis cover. Only buy with the belt replaced and invoiced, the campaigns done and normal oil consumption.[2][3][4][9]

  • 1.2 PureTech turbo 100-155 hp Euro 6.2/6.3/6d (2018-2022)

    2018–2022 · 100–155 hp · EB2DT, EB2DTS, EB2ADTD, EB2ADTX

    With caution

It has the pre-June 2022 belt and can suffer oil consumption from the separator; in return, almost all units are still within Stellantis's 10 years or 180,000 km of cover if the maintenance is documented.[2][4][10]

  • 1.2 PureTech turbo 100 and 130 hp with revised belt (2022-2025)

    2022–2025 · 100–130 hp · EB2DTS, EB2ADTD

    With caution

It has the revised belt and Stellantis extended its 10 years or 180,000 km cover to turbos built up to December 2025, but it is still an oil-bath belt that needs periodic replacement, and there is as yet no public data on its durability.[1][2][11]

  • 1.2 Turbo / Hybrid third generation with chain, 100-145 hp (from 2023)

    since 2023 · 100–145 hp · EB2LTED, EB2LTEDH2

    With caution

The chain eliminates the belt problem, but you need to confirm that the 2025 recall for a possible petrol leak has been done and, on units built up to February 2024, the correction of the camshaft sprocket bolts.[12][13]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

Known faults of the 1.2 PureTech

Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).

  1. 1Critical severityFrequency: Very frequentTimingOil-bath timing belt degradationThe oil-bath belt on the 1.2 PureTech (2012-2025) can swell and shed debris that blocks the oil pump pick-up; without lubrication, the engine can be destroyed. Stellantis covers it up to 10 years or 180,000 km and asks for it to be changed every 100,000 km or 6 years.Repair (garage): €400–€800
  2. 2Critical severityFrequency: Very frequentLubricationLoss of braking assistance from vacuum pump damageOn 1.2 PureTech turbos built between 2013 and 2018, belt debris can damage the vacuum pump that feeds the brake servo and reduce braking assistance. There were two free recalls (2020 and 2022); it is worth confirming they were done.
  3. 3High severityFrequency: Very frequentLubricationExcessive oil consumption from carbon on the piston rings or oil separator failureThe 2014 to 2023 1.2 PureTech turbos can use too much oil: those from 2014-2018 through carbon blocking the piston rings and those from 2018-2023 through a defective oil separator. Stellantis considers more than 0.3 l per 1,000 km abnormal and includes it in its cover.
  4. 4Critical severityFrequency: RareFuelPossible petrol leak in the high-pressure circuit (chain-driven generation)In 2025 Stellantis recalled the new-generation 1.2 turbos (chain-driven, 100 and 136 hp, hybrids included) built from 2023 to 2025: a joint on the high-pressure pipe could leak petrol, with a risk of fire. It is fixed with a free re-tightening taking under 30 minutes.Repair: €0
  5. 5High severityFrequency: RareTimingTiming misalignment from the camshaft sprocket bolts (chain-driven generation)On the third-generation 1.2 (chain-driven) built up to 17 February 2024, the camshaft sprocket bolts could be incorrectly fitted and throw the timing out: engine warning light, loss of power and, in the worst case, contact between pistons and valves.
  6. 6High severityFrequency: RareLubricationFaulty piston cooling jets (naturally aspirated, 2022-2024)Stellantis recalled in France about 68,000 Peugeot 208, Citroën C3 and Opel Corsa models from 2022-2024 with the naturally aspirated PureTech because of faulty piston cooling jets: they cause noise and, in extreme cases, damage to the engine casing and oil on the exhaust. It is fixed with an oil and filter change.Repair: €0

What the 1.2 PureTech is

The 1.2 PureTech is the 1,199 cc three-cylinder petrol engine of the EB family, developed by PSA and now part of Stellantis. It began production in 2012 at Trémery (France) in naturally aspirated form; in 2014 the direct-injection turbo versions arrived, built at Douvrin, and after the Opel takeover the plants at Tychy (Poland) and Szentgotthárd (Hungary) were added. The 1.0-litre variant (EB0) shares the design but is not covered on this page.[6]

Until the end of its second generation, in 2025, the timing is handled by a belt that runs immersed in the engine oil. That solution is behind its best-known fault and Stellantis's warranty extensions, refunds and recalls. In Spain alone, around 500,000 PureTech engines (1.0 and 1.2) were sold across Peugeot, Citroën and Opel.[2][6][10]

The third generation, launched in 2023 with the 48 V hybrids, replaces the belt with a chain and adds a variable-geometry turbo and Miller cycle. In 2026 it arrives without hybridisation in the Peugeot 208 and 2008 under the commercial name Turbo 100 (101 hp and 205 Nm), with 70% new parts compared with the previous PureTech.[5][6][7][14]

It is fitted to dozens of Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Opel models (from 2017, with the Crossland X and Grandland X), as well as the Toyota Proace City; the chain-driven version is also used in Fiat, Jeep, Alfa Romeo and Lancia models.[5][6][9]

Technical data[6][7]

What changed between versions

  1. since 2012

    1.2 VTi / PureTech naturally aspirated 68-83 hp (EB2, EB2F, EB2FA..., from 2012)

The first variant of the engine: three cylinders, 1,199 cc, no turbo and an oil-bath timing belt. Depending on the code it delivers 68 to 83 hp (for example, the 82 hp EB2F and the 83 hp EB2FA); the EB2FA and EB2FAD variants meet Euro 6d.[6]

  2. 2013–2018

    1.2 PureTech turbo 110 and 130 hp Euro 6.1 (EB2DT, EB2DTS, 2013-2018)

Adds a turbo and direct injection (110 hp EB2DT and 130 hp EB2DTS). Euro 6.1 units (6b and 6c) were built until mid-2018. These turbos use an engine-oil-lubricated vacuum pump for the brake servo; the 2020 recall covers cars built from March 2013.[3][6][15][16]

  3. 2018–2022

    1.2 PureTech turbo 100-155 hp Euro 6.2/6.3/6d (2018-2022)

From mid-2018 the Euro 6.2/6.3 approvals arrive along with new outputs: 100 hp (EB2ADTD) and 155 hp (EB2ADTX), alongside the 110 and 130 hp. It keeps the original belt until June 2022; in this phase Stellantis attributes the oil consumption to a defective oil separator, not to the piston rings.[4][6][11]

  4. 2022–2025

1.2 PureTech turbo 100 and 130 hp with revised belt (2022-2025)

From June 2022 it has a reinforced belt, more resistant to oil ageing, which is also sold as a spare part. The maintenance plan calls for changing it every 100,000 km or 6 years. Stellantis set the end of production of this second-generation block for the end of 2025.[2][11][17]

  5. since 2023

1.2 Turbo / Hybrid third generation with chain, 100-145 hp (from 2023)

A redesign with 70% new parts: timing chain instead of a belt, variable-geometry turbo, Miller cycle, 350 bar injection, new pistons and an improved oil separator. It debuted in 2023 in the 48 V hybrids (Hybrid 100/136, then 110/145) and in 2026 arrives without hybridisation in the 208 and 2008 as the Turbo 100.[5][7][10][14]
