BMW N20 engine: faults and reliability
BMW N20 (N20B20 / N20B20A / N20B20B) · BMW
The BMW N20 (2011-2017) was the first turbocharged four-cylinder with which BMW replaced its naturally aspirated six-cylinders in models such as the 320i, 328i and X3, and it is generally mechanically sound. Its best-documented weak point is the timing chain guides and tensioner on units built before 2015; oil leaks, the electric water pump and, to a lesser extent, the turbo and the high-pressure fuel pump are also known issues.[1][2]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.
Known faults of the BMW N20
Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).
- 1Critical severityCommonFrequency: CommonTimingTiming chain guide and tensioner wear (2011-2015)Yes: on BMW N20s built mainly between 2011 and 2015, the timing chain guides and tensioner wear out early; if the chain jumps teeth it can put pistons and valves out of sync and cause catastrophic damage. BMW revised the design in 2015, without a formal recall.Appears at around 129,000 km
- 2Critical severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalCoolingElectric water pump failure (BMW campaign in the US over fire risk)The N20 has an electric water pump whose connector can suffer ingress of blow-by liquid; a short circuit can cause local overheating and, very rarely, a fire. BMW recalled 720,000 vehicles in the US in 2024, not including the European Union or Spain.
- 3Medium severityCommonFrequency: CommonLubricationOil leaks from the rocker cover gasket and the filter housingYes: with the years and heat cycles, the rocker cover gasket and the oil filter housing or cooler gasket on the N20 start to weep oil; it is not an acute defect but expected wear that is worth watching before the oil level drops too low.
- 4Medium severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalTurboWastegate noise and plastic charge pipe breakageThe N20's single TwinScroll turbo is not, in itself, a frequent point of failure, but over the years wastegate noise or rattle and a loss of pressure can appear, and the plastic pipe that carries air from the turbo to the intercooler can crack, especially with poor maintenance or on modified engines.
- 5Medium severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalInjectionHigh-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failureThe high-pressure pump that feeds the N20's direct injection (High Precision Injection) can fail, especially on high-mileage units, leaving the car with hard starting, jerking or, in the worst case, unable to start.

What the BMW N20 is
The BMW N20 is an inline four-cylinder, 2.0-litre engine with a single twin-scroll turbo, with which BMW replaced, from 2011, its historic naturally aspirated six-cylinders of the same capacity or of 3.0 litres. It has an aluminium block and head, double VANOS, the throttle-less Valvetronic intake system, direct petrol injection (High Precision Injection) and an electric water pump independent of engine speed. The US magazine Wards Auto included it in its "10 Best Engines" of 2012.[1][3]
Its arrival marked a significant shift in the BMW range: models that until then had been sold with six-cylinder engines moved to the four-cylinder N20 under the same commercial name. This is the case of the 328i and 528i, which from 2012 replaced their N52/N53 six-cylinders with the N20 without changing their commercial name. The previous generation of the 3 Series (E90/E91/E92/E93) never got the N20: the change came with the arrival of the F30 in 2012.[4][5][6]
Overall, the N20 has a reputation for being mechanically sound, but it carries one well-documented weak point: the plastic guides and the timing chain tensioner of engines built before 2015, which BMW redesigned that year without issuing a formal recall. Alongside that fault are others more common on a direct-injection turbo engine with years of use: oil leaks at the rocker cover and the filter housing, the electric water pump, the turbo and its charge pipe, and the high-pressure fuel pump.[2][7][8]
From 2014, and in stages depending on the model until 2016-2017, BMW gradually replaced the N20 with the B48, the turbocharged four-cylinder of its new modular family, with chain guides redesigned from the outset.[4][9][10]
