Problems with the shock absorbers: symptoms, cost and affected models

We have documented 127 faults with the shock absorbers in 125 cars. The most important by severity and frequency: faulty fixing of the front hub to the shock absorber: the wheel axle can break (2019 vehicles) (Citroën Jumper II and Peugeot Boxer III), insufficient tightening torque on the bolted shock absorber connection (Fiat Scudo III) and shock absorber mounting to the bodywork with insufficient tightening torque (Opel Vivaro C and Peugeot Expert III). At an independent garage, the repair costs from €700 to €700 depending on the engine or car.[1]

How it works and why it fails

Shock absorbers and top mounts

Shock absorbers control the rebound of the springs and keep the wheels on the road. They wear progressively, so it is hard to notice, and the top mounts (the upper supports with a bearing) often make noises when turning or going over bumps. Some cars have air or adaptive suspension, which is more expensive to repair.

What to do

If the car bounces after a bump, leans heavily in corners, the nose dives under braking or you see oil on the body of the shock absorber, have them checked. They are replaced in pairs on the same axle. Worn shock absorbers lengthen braking distances.
