3 sourcesHow we work

How it works and why it fails

ABS and stability control (ESP)

ABS stops the wheels locking when braking and ESP corrects skids by braking individual wheels. Both depend on the speed sensors at each wheel and on a hydraulic block with its control unit. A dirty sensor or a damaged wire is enough to turn the warning light on.

What to do

With the ABS or ESP warning light on, the brakes still work, but without those aids: drive with a bigger safety margin and get a diagnosis. If the light comes with an odd pedal feel or leaks, do not drive. Some hydraulic blocks have been subject to campaigns because of a fire risk.
