1.5 BlueHDi engine (DV5): faults and reliability

PSA/Stellantis 1.5 BlueHDi (DV5) · Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Opel, Toyota and Fiat

The 1.5 BlueHDi has a serious weak point in engines built from October 2017 to January 2023: the 7 mm chain linking the camshafts can stretch and break. Stellantis has recalled them and covers this fault for 10 years or 240,000 km; engines built up to August 2020 can also suffer AdBlue tank failures, with partial compensation from the manufacturer.[1][2][3][4]

Which 1.5 BlueHDi versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • 1.5 BlueHDi 75-130 with 7 mm chain (October 2017 - January 2023)

    2017–2023 · 75–130 hp · DV5RC, DV5RD, DV5RE, DV5RCE, DV5RCF, DV5RUC

    With caution

Worth buying if the chain campaign has been carried out and the servicing is documented with the required oil, because Stellantis's 10-year or 240,000 km cover depends on it, and that cover requires following the manufacturer's recommendations and presenting invoices.[11][12][13]

  • No problems are known with the reinforced chain. You only need to check by VIN for two recent campaigns: the injection rail one (units from July to October 2025) and the water pump sprocket one (October 2025 to February 2026).[2][14][15]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

Known faults of the 1.5 BlueHDi

Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).

  1. 1Critical severityVery frequentFrequency: Very frequentTimingWear and breakage of the 7 mm chain between the camshaftsIn 1.5 BlueHDi engines built between October 2017 and January 2023, the 7 mm chain linking the camshafts can stretch and break, causing serious engine damage. Stellantis has recalled them and covers the fault for 10 years or 240,000 km.Repair (garage): €730–€820
  2. 2Medium severityVery frequentFrequency: Very frequentEmissions controlAdBlue tank and pump failure1.5 BlueHDi engines built up to August 2020 can suffer failures of the AdBlue tank pump module, with a "no engine start" countdown. The whole tank is usually replaced and Stellantis contributes to the cost up to 8 years.Repair: €1,000–€1,500
  3. 3High severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalInjectionSeizure of the high-pressure pump and injection systemSome early 1.5 BlueHDi engines have suffered seizure of the Bosch high-pressure pump, with juddering or the engine stalling on the road, sometimes before 50,000 km. The repair means replacing the entire injection system and the fuel tank.
  4. 4Critical severityRareFrequency: RareFuelDiesel leak at the common rail (2026 recall)Stellantis has recalled more than 50,000 vehicles in Europe with 1.5 BlueHDi engines built between July and October 2025: a badly positioned cone on the common rail can loosen the nut and cause a diesel leak with a fire risk. The repair is free.Repair: €0
  5. 5High severityRareFrequency: RareTimingWater pump sprocket slipping and belt misalignment (2026 recall)In 1.5 BlueHDi engines built between October 2025 and February 2026, the water pump sprocket can slip and misalign the timing belt, causing a loss of power or the engine stopping. Stellantis replaces the water pump kit free of charge in about 2.5 hours.Repair: €0

What the 1.5 BlueHDi is

The 1.5 BlueHDi, from the DV5 family (also called DV5R), is a four-cylinder inline diesel of 1,499 cc with double overhead camshafts, 16 valves and a variable-geometry turbo with intercooler. It has a 75 mm bore and 84.8 mm stroke and produces between 75 and 130 hp, with 300 Nm of torque in the 120 and 130 hp versions.[5][6]

It debuted in 2017 in the Peugeot 308 with 130 hp and then spread to almost the whole Peugeot, Citroën and DS range, to PSA-based Opels (badged 1.5 Turbo D or 1.5 Diesel), to the Toyota ProAce City (1.5 D-4D) and, from 2022, to the Fiat Doblò and Scudo. Ford fits the same engine under the name 1.5 EcoBlue.[2][7][8][9][16]

The timing is mixed: an external belt running dry carries the drive from the crankshaft, and a short chain inside the cylinder head synchronises the two camshafts. That chain was 7 mm wide in engines built up to January 2023; from February 2023 it is 8 mm and the engine received changes to the exhaust valves, the tensioner and the upper cover.[1][7][8][12]

To meet the Euro 6.2 standard it has a particulate filter and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) with AdBlue. The most common codes are DV5RE (75 hp), DV5RD and DV5RCF (100 hp), DV5RCE (110 hp) and DV5RC (120 and 130 hp); parts catalogues also list the DV5RUC and DV5RUCd variants.[3][5][9][10]
