What MotorFiable is

MotorFiable is an independent website that gathers the known faults of the most common engines in Spain: symptoms, cause, repair cost and how to check for them before buying, with the source for each piece of data. We organise it by engine because the same engine is fitted to many different cars.

Who it is for

  • If you are buying a used car

Which engine it has, which versions are best avoided and what to check before you pay: history, parts already replaced and outstanding campaigns.

    Find my car
  • If a warning light has come on or you notice something odd

Start with what you notice (a noise, smoke, loss of power) and we will tell you which faults cause it and whether you should stop.

    Search by symptom
  • If you repair your own car

Why each fault happens, which part fixes it, how difficult the repair is and how much a garage charges for it.

Why we organise faults by engine

Manufacturers share engines between brands and models. If an engine has a known fault, every car that uses it has it, whatever it is called. That is why we document each fault only once, under its engine, and it appears on the page of every car that has it, with the affected versions and years.

An example: the PSA Peugeot Citroën y Ford 1.6 HDi engine is fitted to 48 Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Opel, Ford, Volvo, Mazda, MINI, Toyota and Mitsubishi models that we have pages for. Each of its 7 documented faults appears on the models that use the affected versions, so it does not matter where you start looking: you reach the same information. On the engine page you will find the source for each car and each fault.

How we work

  • Every piece of data links to the source it comes from, and we have opened and read every source before citing it.
  • If we cannot find a reliable source, we do not publish the data: the page says “No reliable data” or lists it under “What we do not know yet”.
  • We rate all faults on the same scales of severity, frequency and verdict.
  • Each page shows the date of its last review, and we correct the errors you report to us.

How we work, in detailAll the sources we cite

Editorial independence

No manufacturer, garage, shop or partner pays to appear on MotorFiable, to change a rating or to have a fault removed. Which faults we publish and how we rate them depends only on what the sources say.

We describe the facts with respect for manufacturers: what fails, in which versions, what the manufacturer has done to fix it and what you can do. If a manufacturer or garage provides documentation that changes a piece of data, we review it like any other source.

How we are funded

The website is free and requires no registration. It is funded in three ways, and none of them changes what we publish:

  • Affiliate links

The “Buy part” buttons lead to Autodoc. If you buy, we may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. They are marked next to each button. How they work

  • Advertising

We do not currently show adverts. If we turn them on, they will go in reserved spaces that never appear before the main answer or between a heading and its text, and we will ask for your consent before using advertising cookies.

  • Requests to partners

From the website you can request a vehicle history report. We pass your request to a partner only if you expressly authorise it on the form, and that partner may pay us for it. What we do with your data
