Problems with control arms, ball joints and bushes: symptoms, cost and affected models
We have documented 149 faults with control arms, ball joints and bushes in 143 cars. The most important by severity and frequency: corrosion of the rear multi-link axle eccentric bolts (Audi A4 B9), corrosion of the eccentric bolts on the multi-link rear axle (Audi Q5 II) and corrosion in the bolt and bushes of the front suspension arm (Citroën Jumpy III). At an independent garage, the repair costs from €300 to €750 depending on the engine or car.[1][2]
How it works and why it fails
Control arms, ball joints, bushes and drop links
Control arms (wishbones) connect the wheels to the body through ball joints and rubber bushes, and the drop links connect the anti-roll bar. They are wear parts which, on some models, give out sooner than normal or have had mounting defects corrected by the manufacturer.
What to do
Knocking over bumps, creaking when turning, a vibrating steering wheel or uneven tyre wear usually point to these parts. After replacing them, have the wheel alignment done. A badly worn ball joint can come apart: do not let it slide.
