Problems with the clutch: symptoms, cost and affected models
We have documented 183 faults with the clutch in 27 engines and gearboxes and 153 cars, affecting 276 models of car in our database. The most important by severity and frequency: juddering, hesitation and slipping of the dry clutch (DPS6) (PowerShift gearbox), clutch pressure plate breakage (2018 and 2019 recalls on the Focus and C-MAX) (PowerShift gearbox) and clutch pressure plate breakage in the PowerShift automatic gearbox (Ford C-Max II). At an independent garage, the repair costs from €340 to €4,000 depending on the engine or car.[1][2][3]
How it works and why it fails
Clutch
The clutch connects and disconnects the engine from the gearbox. It is a wear item, but in some cars it wears out much sooner than normal because of weight, engine torque or design, and on dual-clutch or automated manual gearboxes the wear also depends on the electronic management.
What to do
If the engine revs rise without the car accelerating (slipping), the pedal vibrates or feels odd, or it is hard to engage gears, have it checked. Avoid driving with your foot resting on the pedal and pulling away with high revs. When replacing it, consider replacing the dual-mass flywheel too if it is already worn.
