1.8 T 20v engine: faults and reliability

Volkswagen/Audi 1.8 T 20v turbo (EA113) · Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Škoda

With up-to-date maintenance, the 20-valve 1.8T has a reputation as a powerful, durable engine for its time, but owner reports document recurring faults: ignition coils (especially on 2001 to 2003 units), water pump and air mass meter, and less often the turbo -sometimes linked to growing oil consumption- and the timing chain tensioner.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Which 1.8 T 20v versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • 1.8 T 20v 150 hp (AEB/AGU/ARZ/AUM, 1996-2005)

    1996–2005 · 150 hp · AEB, AGU, ARZ, AUM

    With caution

A German used-car specialist notes that the ignition coils often give trouble on 2001 to 2003 units, and there is a documented case of an unreplaced timing chain tensioner on a 150 hp Passat with 184,000 km.[2][6]

  • 1.8 T 20v 180 hp (AUQ, 1998-2006)

    1998–2006 · 180 hp · AUQ

    With caution

Audi TT owner reports document turbo failures (at 60,000 and 155,000 km) and water pump failures (replaced at 110,000 km and again at 130,000 km on the same car), as well as several mentions of the air mass meter; the Audi A3 with this engine also has accumulated mentions of the air mass meter and ignition coils.[3][4]

  • 1.8 T 20v 225 hp quattro (BAM, 1999-2006)

    1999–2006 · 225 hp · BAM

    With caution

Among the 225 hp Audi TT owner reports collected by Fiches-auto.fr there are several mentions of ignition coils, the air mass meter and abnormal oil consumption (one case at 146,000 km); these are the same weak points as on the lower-power versions, and the sources consulted do not indicate that this version is more prone to them.[4]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

Known faults of the 1.8 T 20v

Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).

  1. 1High severityFrequency: OccasionalTurboTurbo wear and oil consumptionThe 1.8T turbo can fail over time -cases documented on an Audi TT at 60,000 and 155,000 km- and several sources link it to growing oil consumption in the engine itself. It is not the most cited fault, but it is one of the most expensive when it appears.
  2. 2Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalCoolingWater pump failureThe water pump is another documented weak point of the 1.8T: a 180 hp Audi TT had to have it replaced twice, at 110,000 and again at 130,000 km. Coolant leaks "in several places" are also described on a Passat with this engine.Appears at around 110,000 km
  3. 3Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalTimingTiming chain tensioner noise and wearAt least one owner documents the timing chain tensioner of this engine left unreplaced, with the resulting chain noise, on a Passat with 184,000 km; another report from a 180 hp Audi TT points to a timing problem at 90,000 km.
  4. 4Low severityFrequency: CommonIgnitionIgnition coil failureYes: the ignition coils (one per cylinder) are among the most cited faults of the 1.8T, especially on engines built between 2001 and 2003. They cause hesitation, a rough idle and the engine warning light coming on; usually it is enough to replace the coil of the affected cylinder.
  5. 5Low severityFrequency: CommonIntakeAir mass meter (MAF sensor) failureThe air mass meter (MAF sensor) fails fairly often on the 1.8T: on the 150 hp Audi A3 it appears in 3 of the 11 reports collected, and it is also documented on the 180 and 225 hp Audi TT. It causes hesitation and loss of power; it is fixed by replacing the sensor.

What the 1.8 T 20v is

The 1.8 T is the 1,781 cc turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with which the Volkswagen Group equipped most of its compact and mid-size models between 1996 and 2006, with a five-valve-per-cylinder head (20 valves in total) and a single timing belt. It was sold under the Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Škoda brands.[7]

It was built in three power outputs identified by different engine codes. The entry-level one, with 150 hp, used the codes AEB, AGU, ARZ and AUM depending on the model and year; it powered, among others, the Golf IV, the Bora, the Passat B5, the Audi A3 8L and the Audi A4 (B5 and B6). The intermediate one, with 180 hp and code AUQ, with a higher-flow K03 turbo, went into the Golf IV GTI, the Audi TT, the Seat León Cupra, the Seat Toledo and the Škoda Octavia RS. The most powerful, 225 hp and code BAM, with a K04 turbo, was reserved for the Audi TT quattro and the Seat León Cupra R.[7][8][9][10][11][12]

The Audi TT (8N) was the first model to offer all three 1.8T power outputs, including the 225 hp quattro version with a double intercooler and a K04 turbo larger than the K03 of the front-wheel-drive 180 hp versions.[8]

The 1.8T was progressively replaced from 2003-2006 depending on the model, coinciding with the generational change of the Golf V, the Audi A3 8P, the Seat León II, the Škoda Octavia II and the Audi TT 8J, which adopted new-generation FSI/TFSI direct-injection engines.[7][8][9][11][12]
