1.4 HDi engine (DV4): faults and reliability
PSA/Ford 1.4 HDi and TDCi (DV4TD) · Peugeot, Citroën, Ford, Mazda and Toyota
It is a small diesel that is generally reliable, but with a very well-documented weakness: the injectors tend to lose their seal over time and let diesel escape. The turbo and the EGR valve also fail on a noticeable minority of units, and there are isolated cases of the crankshaft damper pulley failing at very high mileages. The timing belt does not seem to cause more problems than on any diesel of its era if it is changed on time.[1][2][3]
Which 1.4 HDi versions should you buy?
Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.
- With caution
1.4 HDi/TDCi 54/68/70 8V (DV4TD, 2001-2009)
2001–2009 · 54–70 hp · DV4TD, 8HT, 8HX, 8HZ
It shares the injector fragility of the rest of the family, documented in both the 68 and 70 hp versions, along with occasional turbo and EGR valve failures. It is worth buying with a maintenance history and no noticeable diesel leaks.[2][3]
- With caution
1.4 HDi 90/92 16V (DV4TED4, 2002-2009)
2002–2009 · 90–92 hp · DV4TED4, 8HY, 8HV
We have not found published reliability statistics specific to this 16-valve version, but it shares the injector design of the rest of the family, so you should check for the same symptoms (smell of diesel, smoke) as on the 8-valve version.[2][6]
Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.
Known faults of the 1.4 HDi
Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).
- 1Medium severityVery frequentFrequency: Very frequentInjectionInjectors that lose their seal and let diesel escapeThe most cited weak point of the 1.4 HDi is its injectors: over time they can lose their seal and let diesel escape, which is usually noticed as a smell of diesel in the car. It appears in the two most common outputs (68 and 70 hp) and in both cases it is identified as the engine's main weakness.
- 2High severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalTimingTiming belt and water pumpThe 1.4 HDi uses a timing belt (with an additional short chain on the 16-valve version), and Fiches-Auto documents some of its failures, along with the water pump, at around 100,000 km. We have not found the manufacturer's official change interval in a reliable source.
- 3Medium severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalTurboPremature turbo wear from poor lubricationThe BorgWarner KP35 turbo of the 8-valve version can wear out early when the oil degrades and forms carbon deposits, reducing its lubrication. It is a minority but recurring fault: it appears in just over 9% of the reports collected for the 68 hp version.
- 4Medium severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalEmissions controlEGR valve clogged with carbonThe EGR valve, which recirculates part of the exhaust gases to reduce emissions, can seize or clog up with the carbon those gases carry. It appears in a noticeable minority of the reports collected for the 68 hp version.
- 5Medium severityRareFrequency: RareTimingCrankshaft damper pulley wearThe crankshaft pulley incorporates a rubber ring that dampens engine vibrations and that can lose grip or crack over time. We have found only one specific report of this fault (a Peugeot 206 at around 250,000 km), so we do not consider it a widespread fault.

What the 1.4 HDi is
The 1.4 HDi belongs to the DV family, developed jointly by PSA and Ford under the diesel engine agreement the two manufacturers signed in 1998. It is a 1,399 cc four-cylinder with common-rail injection and a turbo, sold since 2001 as the 1.4 HDi at Peugeot and Citroën and as the 1.4 TDCi at Ford; Mazda fitted it as the 1.4 CD (MZ-CD) and Toyota as the 1.4 D-4D in the Aygo, the result of engine supply agreements between the manufacturers.[1][4][5]
The most widespread version is the 8-valve (DV4TD), with a BorgWarner KP35 turbo without an intercooler and outputs of 54, 68 or 70 hp depending on the market and the brand (codes 8HT, 8HX and 8HZ). It powered small runabouts such as the Peugeot 206, 207 and 1007, the Citroën C1, C2 and C3, the Ford Fiesta and Fusion, the Mazda2/Demio and the Toyota Aygo, several of them built jointly by Toyota, PSA and Ford at the TPCA plant in Kolín (Czech Republic).[1][5][7][8]
From 2002 a 16-valve variant was added (DV4TED4, codes 8HY and 8HV) with a variable-geometry IHI turbo and an intercooler, which raised output to 90-92 hp; it was first fitted to the first-generation Citroën C3. The engine was gradually withdrawn from catalogues around 2009-2010 in favour of more modern diesels (new generations of TDCi at Ford, larger-capacity HDi at PSA).[1][6]

What changed between versions
2001–2009
1.4 HDi/TDCi 54/68/70 8V (DV4TD, 2001-2009)
The original version of the family: 8-valve cylinder head and a single camshaft, no intercooler, with a fixed-geometry BorgWarner KP35 turbo. It is the most widely fitted variant, with outputs of 54, 68 or 70 hp depending on the injection pump setting and the brand (Peugeot, Citroën, Ford, Mazda, Toyota).[4][5]
2002–2009
1.4 HDi 90/92 16V (DV4TED4, 2002-2009)
High-output variant with a 16-valve cylinder head, a mixed timing drive of belt and a short chain, and a variable-geometry IHI RHF3V turbo with an intercooler, which raises output to 90-92 hp and torque to 200 N·m. It debuted in the first-generation Citroën C3.[6]
