Engine stalls or cuts out while driving: causes and the faults that trigger it

In a car with a manual gearbox, the most common reason for stalling is clutch technique: releasing it too quickly or being at too low revs for the gear. If the engine cuts out without you causing it, RACE and Autodoc Club point to an unstable idle (EGR, throttle, mass airflow sensor or air leaks), a fault in the fuel supply, the crankshaft sensor or a battery or alternator problem. If it cuts out while driving, stop somewhere safe and call for assistance if it keeps happening.[1][2][3][4][5]

76 documented faults cause it in 59 engines. The most important:

What to do now

As soon as possible

If it cuts out while driving, you will lose power steering and brake assistance: hold the wheel firmly and bring the car to a safe stop. Do not keep trying to restart it if it makes strange noises.

What it means

The engine stops unexpectedly, at idle or while driving. It may be caused by fuel supply problems, crankshaft or camshaft position sensors, or a timing drive that has jumped.

General explanation from MotorFiable. How it shows up in each engine, with sources, is in the list of faults.

Most common causes

From most to least likely according to the sources. Under each cause, the part and the related OBD codes.

  1. 1. Clutch technique or worn clutch (manual gearbox)

    Common cause

Autopista names it as the most common cause of stalling: releasing the clutch too quickly without giving enough throttle, being at too low an engine speed for the gear selected or not coordinating clutch and accelerator well. A worn clutch, which does not transmit engine power properly to the wheels, can also cause it.[1]

    Faults with with the clutch

  2. 2. Unstable idle: EGR, throttle, mass airflow sensor or air leaks

    Common cause

RACE places unstable idle among the causes of the engine cutting out, with vibrations and fluctuating revs. It cites a dirty EGR valve, a dirty idle valve or throttle, air leaks through damaged hoses, a contaminated air filter and a faulty mass airflow sensor. Autodoc Club associates P0505 with stalling at idle or when coming to a stop, and P0101 with stalling and hard starting.[2][6][7]

Faults with with the EGR valveFaults with with the engine sensorsP0101

  3. 3. Fuel supply fault: filter, pump or injectors

    Common cause

Autopista cites a blocked fuel filter or a damaged pump, and for a dirty diesel filter it describes unstable idle with a tendency to stall. Autodoc Club adds that fuel pressure that is too low (P0087) can cause sudden stalling, and RACE includes on diesels dirty or worn injectors and the high-pressure pump.[1][2][5][8]

Faults with with the fuel pumpFaults with with the injectorsP0087

  4. 4. Worn spark plugs or coils (petrol)

    Possible cause

RACE points to faulty spark plugs and ignition coils among the causes of unstable idle on petrol engines, with the risk of the engine cutting out.[2]

Faults with with the ignition coils

  5. 5. Crankshaft sensor

    Possible cause

Autodoc Club links code P0335 to the engine cutting out while running, loss of power and difficulty or inability to start. Among the causes it lists the connector, the sensor ring, the wiring, a broken timing belt and a weak battery.[4]

Faults with with the engine sensorsP0335

  6. 6. Weak battery or alternator not charging

    Possible cause

RACE counts a weak battery and a faulty alternator among the causes of unstable idle, because the sensors receive wrong data. In addition, an engine that cuts out minutes after starting indicates, according to RACE, that the battery is running down through lack of charge.[2][3]

Faults with with the 12 V batteryFaults with with the alternator and starter motor

  7. 7. Immobiliser cutting the engine

    Uncommon

RACE includes among the signs of an immobiliser fault that the engine starts and stalls straight away, and that the key works intermittently. If it happens right after starting, trying the spare key helps rule it out.[9]

Faults with with the control units

  8. 8. Broken timing belt

    Uncommon

According to Autopista, when the belt breaks the engine loses timing and there can be a sudden loss of power and difficulty starting, with the risk of the pistons hitting the valves. Autopista recommends replacing it at the intervals set by the manufacturer and warns that the repair is expensive.[10]

Faults with with the timing belt

Depending on what you notice

Stalls at idle

An engine that stalls when stationary usually has an unstable idle: RACE gives for diesels dirty injectors, a dirty EGR or a high-pressure pump fault, and for petrol engines spark plugs, coils, a dirty idle valve or throttle and air leaks; for both, a weak air filter, mass airflow sensor, or battery and alternator. Autodoc Club associates code P0505 (idle control) with stalling at idle or when coming to a stop.[2][7]

The car stalls when braking

If it is a manual and it stalls when braking to a stop, the most likely cause is technique: Autopista cites being at too low an engine speed for the gear engaged and poor clutch coordination. If it happens anyway, or on an automatic, it is worth treating it as an unstable idle (EGR, throttle, mass airflow sensor, air leaks) and asking for a diagnosis.[1][2][7]

The car starts and cuts out straight away

RACE links an engine that cuts out minutes after starting to an alternator that is not charging and a battery that is running down, and also cites the immobiliser when the car starts and stalls instantly. A faulty crankshaft sensor or a dirty diesel filter, with its unstable idle and tendency to stall, are other routes.[3][4][8][9]

My car cuts out while driving and then starts again

None of the sources we opened describes that specific stop-and-restart pattern, but they do cite causes of stalling while driving: the crankshaft sensor (P0335), low fuel pressure (P0087), the mass airflow sensor (P0101) and an alternator that is not charging. If it happens again, do not ignore it and ask for a code reading.[3][4][5][6]

The car loses power and cuts out

Losing power before stalling points to a fuel supply or air measurement problem. Autopista describes a dirty diesel filter with loss of power when overtaking, unstable idle and a tendency to stall; Autodoc Club adds the mass airflow sensor (P0101) and low fuel pressure (P0087), and Autopista a broken timing belt, with sudden loss of power.[5][6][8][10]

My car cut out while driving and won't start

If it cuts out while driving and does not start again, Autodoc Club links P0335 (crankshaft sensor) to stalling while running and being unable to start, and P0087 to fuel pressure that is too low and can prevent starting. Autopista adds that a broken timing belt causes difficulty starting and recommends going immediately to a specialist garage.[4][5][10]

What to check first

  1. Note when it stalls: when releasing the clutch, at idle, when braking or while driving with a loss of power. That detail points to the cause (technique, idle, fuel, sensor or electrical charge).[1][2]
  2. If it is a manual, go over your technique: press the clutch fully down, choose the right gear and release it gradually while you accelerate.[1]
  3. If it stalls on its own, check the battery and the alternator charge: RACE gives a reference voltage of between 13.5 and 14.5 V with the engine running, and warns of dim or flickering lights and of the engine cutting out minutes after starting.[2][3]
  4. Go over the maintenance: filters (air and fuel) according to the manual, cleaning of the intake system and the condition of the vacuum hoses, which may be cracked.[2][8]
  5. Ask a garage for a code reading: P0335 (crankshaft sensor), P0087 (fuel pressure), P0101 (airflow sensor) and P0505 (idle control) are the ones Autodoc Club associates with stalling.[4][5][6][7]
  6. If it cuts out while driving, stop somewhere safe and use roadside assistance rather than risk it stalling again on the journey.[2][3]

Can I keep driving?

Urgency: As soon as possible

It depends on why it stalls. An occasional stall from clutch technique on a manual is not a fault. However, if the engine cuts out on its own, especially while driving, RACE advises parking somewhere safe and using assistance rather than risking it stopping during the journey. Autodoc Club warns that low fuel pressure can prevent starting and damage the engine, and Autopista that a broken timing belt means going to a garage immediately. If it keeps happening, do not let it go: have it diagnosed soon.[1][2][5][10]

Frequently asked questions

Why does my car stall?

On a manual, Autopista names as the most common cause poor coordination between clutch and accelerator, such as releasing the clutch very quickly or being at too low an engine speed for the gear. If it stalls without you causing it, RACE points to unstable idle (EGR, throttle, injectors, spark plugs, airflow sensor, air leaks) and to the battery or alternator, and Autodoc Club adds the crankshaft sensor and fuel pressure.[1][2][4][5]

Is it serious if the car stalls at idle?

A one-off stall is not, but if it keeps happening it indicates that something in the idle is not working properly. Autodoc Club associates code P0505 with stalling at idle, hard cold starting and higher consumption, and RACE warns that if the unstable idle is severe it is not safe to drive and you should use assistance.[2][7]

What do I do if my car cuts out while driving?

RACE advises parking somewhere safe and using assistance rather than risking another stall on the journey. If you suspect the alternator, RACE recommends turning off the air conditioning, the screen and non-essential systems, and stopping without trying to start again in order to conserve charge.[2][3]

Can a car stall because of the battery or the alternator?

Yes. RACE includes a weak battery and a faulty alternator among the causes of unstable idle, and describes the engine cutting out minutes after starting when the battery runs down through lack of charge. After using jump leads, if the engine keeps running it is probably the battery; if it cuts out soon afterwards, the alternator.[2][3]

How much does it cost to fix a car that stalls?

It depends on the cause. Autopista gives between 15 and 100 euros for the diesel filter alone and between 50 and 150 with labour at a garage; Autodoc Club gives between 170 and 220 euros on average for replacing the crankshaft sensor and puts the airflow sensor at about 300 euros. Diagnosis of the idle control is around 100 to 150 euros (all figures for Spain).[4][6][7][8]

How do I know if the crankshaft sensor is the culprit?

Autodoc Club associates code P0335 with the engine light, difficulty or inability to start, loss of power, stalling while running and higher consumption. Only a code reading confirms it, because the list of causes of P0335 also includes the wiring, the connector, the sensor ring, a broken timing belt and a weak battery.[4]
