Burning smell: causes and the faults that trigger it

Most often the burning smell comes from an oil or antifreeze leak dripping onto hot parts, a slipping clutch or overheated brakes; it can also be due to a short circuit. If there is also dense white smoke that does not go away, heavy blue smoke or smoke coming from the engine bay, the sensible thing is to stop in a safe place. If in doubt, RACE recommends a diagnosis at a garage.[1][2][3][4][5]

22 documented faults cause it in 22 engines. The most important:

What it means

A pungent smell after going uphill or manoeuvring usually comes from the clutch. If it smells of burnt oil, there may be a leak dripping onto the exhaust.

General explanation from MotorFiable. How it shows up in each engine, with sources, is in the list of faults.

What to do now

Garage soon

Stop the car and check whether smoke is coming from the engine bay. If it smells of burnt oil, check the level and look for the leak.

Most common causes

From most to least likely according to the sources. Under each cause, the part and the related OBD codes.

  1. 1. Oil or antifreeze leak onto the engine or exhaust

    Common cause

RACE states that, generally, a burning smell comes from some loss of oil or antifreeze. Autopista adds that oil dripping onto the exhaust can smell of burning without the engine burning it inside the cylinders. If the smell appears right after topping up a reservoir, it may be a spilt drop: RACE advises that the garage use a funnel.[1][4]

    Faults with with oil leaks

  2. 2. Slipping clutch

    Common cause

According to RACE, it is a common fault, especially in cars with a less powerful, small-capacity engine, which have a small clutch. On a steep hill or with a heavily loaded car, the friction linings wear as they slip and smell of burning. With a very worn and strained clutch, RACE adds that the smell can be very unpleasant and smoke comes from the engine bay.[1][6]

    Faults with with the clutch

  3. 3. Overheated or dragging brakes

    Common cause

RACE considers it normal to notice a burning smell after hard braking on a mountain pass, at high speed or with a heavy load. If you drive with the handbrake on, the constant rubbing of the pads heats the brakes and can give a burning smell and smoke at the rear wheels. A brake caliper that seizes stays closed and keeps the pad pressing on the disc permanently.[1][7][8]

Faults with with brake calipers and discsFaults with with the handbrake

  4. 4. Coolant entering the combustion chamber

    Possible cause

If the white smoke does not go away, is dense and smells of burning, RACE attributes it to a loss of coolant through failures in the head gasket, the cylinder head or the block. Autopista names it as the most common cause of constant white smoke with a burning smell and asks you to stop driving if there are bubbles in the expansion tank, a mixture of oil and coolant or a rapid rise in temperature.[2][3][9]

Faults with with the head gasket

  5. 5. Oil burning inside the engine or turbo

    Possible cause

Autopista recognises this problem by the bluish smoke from the exhaust, a strong smell of lubricant or an abnormal drop in the oil level between checks, and cites as causes worn piston rings, valve stem seals, a blocked PCV valve, internal turbo leaks, oil of the wrong viscosity or a damaged head gasket. RACE describes an extreme case in turbocharged cars, especially diesels: if the turbo seals break from the heat, oil can get into the intake and a lot of blue smoke is produced. RACE calls it a very common failure in the hot areas of southern Spain.[1][4]

Faults with with oil consumptionFaults with with the turbo

  6. 6. Short circuit or poor electrical contact

    Possible cause

RACE explains that if an electrical component makes poor contact and the positive terminal comes loose and touches the negative, a short circuit occurs, which gives a burning smell and can blow fuses. As the temperature rises, a short circuit can also ignite flammable vapours, so it should not be left.[1][5]

Faults with with the electrical wiring

  7. 7. Smell of burning rubber: tyres, mounts or belts

    Possible cause

RACE says that the burning smell can come from the tyres themselves if you pull away making them spin, and also from loose engine mounts or misadjusted drive belts.[1]

Faults with with the crankshaft pulley and engine mounts

Depending on what you notice

Burning smell in the car

Note when it appears. After a steep hill or with the car loaded it points to the clutch; after hard braking on a descent, to the brakes; with stains under the engine or smoke, to an oil or antifreeze leak; and if fuses blow, to a short circuit. RACE recommends taking the car to a garage for a diagnosis if in doubt.[1]

My car smells of burning

If the smell comes with smoke from the engine bay or with temperature warning lights, stop in a safe place and switch off the engine. RACE also covers what to do in a fire: move at least 50 metres away, call 112 and do not open the bonnet, because oxygen would get in and fuel the flames.[1][5]

My car smells of burning outside

If you notice it when you get out, the sources point to oil or antifreeze dripping onto the hot engine or exhaust, to hot brakes after a hard descent or from driving with the handbrake on, or to the clutch. Look for stains underneath and check the handbrake is off before setting off.[1][4][7]

My car is blowing white smoke and smells of burning

Light white smoke on a cold start is water vapour from the exhaust and, according to RACE, goes away in five or ten minutes. If it is dense, does not disappear and smells of burning, it may be coolant entering combustion through the head gasket, the cylinder head or the block; RACE advises stopping the car immediately. On diesels, Autopista cites injectors that spray poorly or glow plugs that fail, and RACE a faulty injection timing or a glow plug that does not work properly.[2][3][9]

What to check first

  1. Note when and where it smells: after climbing a hill or with a load, after braking hard, only with smoke, on starting or with blowing fuses. That clue points towards the clutch, the brakes, a leak or an electrical fault.[1][7]
  2. Before setting off, check the handbrake is off: RACE recommends looking at the handbrake icon on the dashboard before pulling away.[7]
  3. Look for stains under the car and check the oil and coolant levels. According to RACE, antifreeze leaves a yellow or green stain, and petrol-engine oil is a honey-like colour.[1][2][10]
  4. Watch the exhaust smoke. White, dense and persistent with a burning smell points to coolant; bluish with a strong smell of lubricant points to oil burning.[2][3][4]
  5. If fuses blow or there is a burning smell with the electrical system, go to a garage to locate the poor contact before fitting another fuse.[1][5]
  6. If you cannot locate the source, ask for a diagnosis at a garage rather than carrying on driving blind; RACE recommends this if in doubt.[1]

Can I keep driving?

Urgency: Garage soon

It depends on the source. A burning smell after hard braking on a mountain pass is normal according to RACE. But you must stop and call for assistance with dense white smoke that does not go away, heavy blue smoke, oil or temperature warning lights, loss of power or smoke coming from the engine bay; with a damaged head gasket, RACE says you should not drive. If there is a fire, RACE says to switch off the engine, move at least 50 metres away, call 112 and not open the bonnet. In all other cases, the sources advise a diagnosis at a garage without delay.[1][3][4][5][9]

Burning smell by brand

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal to smell burning after braking hard on a descent?

Yes. RACE says that, on a mountain pass at high speed or with a heavy load, it is normal to notice a burning smell after hard braking. If the smell appears for no reason, or you drive with the handbrake on, the constant rubbing of the pads heats the brakes and can give a burning smell and smoke at the rear wheels: they should be checked.[1][7]

Is white smoke always serious?

No. Light white smoke on a cold start is water vapour that has built up in the exhaust: according to RACE, if it goes away in five or ten minutes there is no fault. If it is dense, persists and smells of burning, RACE and Autopista link it to a loss of coolant through the head gasket, the cylinder head or the block and advise stopping.[2][3]

Can I keep driving with a damaged head gasket?

You should not. RACE only allows moving a few metres to get out of a dangerous situation, if there is no serious overheating; carrying on driving can damage the cylinder head, pistons and valves and make the repair uneconomic. The article gives no prices; in another guide RACE speaks of a minimum of 800 euros and up to 3,000 euros if the cylinder head has to be replaced.[3][9]

What do I do if a turbo diesel will not stop accelerating and blows blue smoke?

This is the extreme case of oil getting in through the turbo's intake that RACE describes: the car can keep accelerating even if you take the key out, and the smoke can stop you seeing the road. RACE recommends engaging a high gear, pressing the clutch and releasing it immediately, so that the engine stalls.[1]

How much does it cost to fix a clutch that smells of burning?

RACE gives around 150-200 euros for the clutch kit plus fitting, and between 600 and 1,000 euros for the complete repair (prices in Spain). If the dual-mass flywheel also has to be replaced, RACE's figure runs from 600 to 1,500 euros.[6]
