Sudden loss of power (limp mode): causes and the faults that trigger it

Limp mode, also called emergency or protection mode, is a safety function in which the control unit limits engine power and revs when it detects abnormal readings from key sensors, to avoid damage and let you reach a garage. It is usually accompanied by the engine fault warning light. With an orange light the sources allow you to continue with caution to the garage, with a red one you must stop immediately, and the cause is still there even if the car regains power after a restart.[1][2][3][4]

66 documented faults cause it in 56 engines. The most important:

What it means

The ECU limits power and engine speed to protect the engine or the gearbox when it detects a serious anomaly: turbo pressure, temperature, oil pressure or fuel. The car keeps moving, but without any pull.

General explanation from MotorFiable. How it shows up in each engine, with sources, is in the list of faults.

What to do now

Garage soon

Drive carefully to a safe place. Switching off and restarting may bring the power back temporarily, but the cause is still there: have it diagnosed.

Most common causes

From most to least likely according to the sources. Under each cause, the part and the related OBD codes.

  1. 1. Dirty or faulty EGR valve

    Common cause

Autopista, Yamovil and Infotaller all put the EGR valve among the first reasons for limp mode, and RACE warns that with a faulty EGR there is a risk of the car entering protection or fault mode and limiting power.[1][3][5][6]

Faults with with the EGR valve

  2. 2. Faulty turbo or incorrect boost pressure

    Common cause

Autopista and Yamovil cite turbo problems and Infotaller the variable-geometry turbo. RACE explains that if the wastegate valve fails, the main symptom is loss of power, and Autodoc Club links code P0299 (turbo underboost) with loss of power and the engine warning light.[1][3][5][7][8]

    Faults with with the turboP0299

  3. 3. Faulty air mass meter

    Common cause

Autopista includes the air mass meter (a sensor that measures the air entering the engine) among the causes of limp mode, and Yamovil names it alongside the EGR and the turbo as common reasons for the warning.[1][3]

Faults with with the engine sensors

  4. 4. Sensors that are dirty, damaged or have stopped sending information

    Possible cause

RACE explains that if the control unit receives no information from a sensor and thinks there is a fault, it immediately puts the car into emergency mode, with warning lights on and speed limited. Yamovil adds that it may simply be an erroneous reading from a sensor, and Autopista cites dirty or damaged sensors.[1][3][4]

Faults with with the engine sensorsFaults with with the control units

  5. 5. Blocked particulate filter

    Possible cause

RACE includes activation of protection mode among the consequences of continuing to drive with a faulty particulate filter, along with progressive loss of performance and higher consumption.[9]

Faults with with the particulate filter

  6. 6. Other anomalies monitored by the control unit (clutch, brakes, fluids)

    Uncommon

Motorpasión explains that the control unit continuously monitors components such as the clutch, the brakes and fluid levels, and that it activates limp mode when it detects anomalies that could endanger the engine or the transmission.[2]

Depending on what you notice

The engine fault light comes on and the car loses power

This is the typical picture of limp mode: Autopista cites an immediate reduction in engine response and the check engine light or an engine-shaped icon as symptoms, and Motorpasión adds that in the Volkswagen group the letters EPC appear. According to Autodoc Club, if the light flashes or there are symptoms such as lack of power, it is best to stop in a safe place.[1][2][10]

The car has gone into emergency mode

Yamovil describes it as limp home, 'limping home': the control unit detects erroneous data and limits performance so that you reach a safe place, and it may switch off functions such as traction control and air conditioning. With an orange light, avoid demanding power from the engine and visit a garage soon; with a red light, stop as soon as possible.[3][5]

What is limp mode in a car and how much does it limit?

Autopista defines it as a safety function in modern vehicles: when the control unit detects abnormal readings from key sensors, it restricts functions to avoid serious faults. The limits vary according to the sources: RACE speaks of about 80 km/h and Motorpasión of not exceeding, on average, 30 or 50 km/h or 2,500 rpm.[1][2][4]

The car goes into safe mode

None of the sources uses the expression 'safe mode', but they describe the same mechanism under the names limp mode, limp home, degraded mode, emergency mode or protection mode. RACE also calls it fault mode: the control unit limits power to protect the engine.[1][3][6]

What to check first

  1. Look at the colour of the warning light. According to Autopista and Yamovil, with an orange light you can continue with caution, without demanding power from the engine, to the garage; if it is red, stop as soon as possible.[1][3]
  2. Avoid asking for power from the engine and do not push the car: RACE warns that with a major loss of power, a red warning light, overheating, strange noises or protection mode, you must not force the engine.[3][9]
  3. If the car goes back to normal behaviour when you stop and restart it, do not treat it as solved: Autopista warns that the fault will still be recorded.[1][3]
  4. Have the codes read with diagnostic equipment at a garage. Autopista recommends this check, and a code such as P0299 indicates, for example, that the turbo is not reaching the desired pressure.[1][7]
  5. If the warning light is red or flashing, or there are symptoms such as noises or a greater loss of power, stop in a safe place, as Autodoc Club advises, and contact breakdown assistance, which is the route Motorpasión suggests.[2][10]

Can I keep driving?

Urgency: Garage soon

It depends on the colour of the warning light and how the car is running, and the sources do not fully agree. Autopista and Yamovil allow you to continue with caution to the garage with an orange light and say to stop immediately with a red one. Motorpasión is more cautious: it advises having the car towed, through your insurance breakdown cover, because continuing with the underlying problem can cause additional faults and even engine shutdown. With a turbo underboost code, Autodoc Club does not recommend driving. The sensible course is not to extend the journey beyond what is essential.[1][2][3][7]

How much it costs to fix

Indicative prices published by the sources cited; they depend on the car and the garage.

RepairPrice
Cleaning the EGR valve (RACE price)[6]€80 – €150

Frequently asked questions

What is limp mode?

It is a safety function in modern cars: when the control unit detects abnormal readings from key sensors, it limits functions and performance to avoid serious faults and allow you to reach a garage. Autopista, Yamovil and Infotaller describe it this way, under the name limp home ('limping home').[1][3][5]

What speed does the car drop to in limp mode?

The sources give different figures. RACE speaks of about 80 km/h and Motorpasión says that, on average, the car does not exceed 30 or 50 km/h and the engine does not go above 2,500 rpm. Neither clarifies what the difference depends on.[2][4]

Does switching off and restarting the car clear it?

Sometimes, temporarily. Autopista says that restarting can reset the system although the fault will remain recorded, and Yamovil that it is sometimes solved by stopping and starting, although it is worth having the garage investigate what happened.[1][3]

Can I keep driving with the car in limp mode?

With an orange light, Autopista and Yamovil allow you to continue with caution to a garage; with a red light, stop immediately. Motorpasión does not recommend driving for long and suggests a tow through your insurance breakdown cover, because continuing can cause further faults.[1][2][3]

Which warning light appears when the car goes into limp mode?

Autopista speaks of the check engine light or an engine-shaped icon, and Motorpasión reminds readers that on Volkswagen group cars the letters EPC (Electronic Power Control) appear. Autodoc Club describes the yellow engine symbol as a possible engine or emissions system fault.[1][2][10]

What usually causes limp mode?

The sources mainly cite the EGR valve, the air mass meter, the turbo and dirty or damaged sensors. RACE adds a faulty particulate filter, and that it is enough for the control unit to receive no signal from a sensor.[1][3][4][9]
