Abnormal vibrations or unstable idle: causes and the faults that trigger it
When the vibration comes from the engine, the sources point mainly to a combustion fault (spark plugs, coils, cylinders not receiving spark or fuel), an unstable idle caused by sensors, a dirty air mass meter or injectors, worn engine mounts and, in cars with a dual-mass flywheel, a damaged flywheel. If it only appears at a certain speed it is more likely to come from the wheels, and vibration when braking or in the steering wheel have their own guides. When cold, vibrating a little for the first few moments is normal.[1][2][3][4][5]
59 documented faults cause it in 49 engines. The most important:
- Critical severity: Timing chain stretch and tensioner failure (EA111) · 1.2 and 1.4 TSI
- Critical severity: Rear timing chain stretch and breakage · BMW N47
- Critical severity: EGR cooler leaks with risk of engine fire · BMW B47
What it means
The engine shakes at idle or sends vibrations through the steering wheel and the body. It can come from worn engine mounts, the dual-mass flywheel, injectors or misfires.
General explanation from MotorFiable. How it shows up in each engine, with sources, is in the list of faults.
What to do now
Monitor
If it comes with the engine warning light, ask for a fault code read-out. If not, have the mounts and the dual-mass flywheel checked.
Most common causes
From most to least likely according to the sources. Under each cause, the part and the related OBD codes.
1. Combustion fault: spark plugs, coils or cylinders not working
Common causeCarglass explains that, if the vibration is caused by faulty spark plugs, cylinders that are switched off or that do not receive fuel or spark because of a faulty coil, it appears even with the car stationary. RACE includes faulty spark plugs or coils among the causes of rough idle on petrol engines and cites rough idle and jerking among the symptoms of a faulty spark plug. Autodoc Club associates code P0300 (misfire) with the engine warning light and lack of power.[1][4][6][7]
2. Worn engine mounts
Common causeRACE explains that the mounts hold the engine to the bodywork and absorb the engine's movement so that oscillations do not reach the cabin. When they fail, there is knocking when changing gear and vibrations, especially as you accelerate and gain speed, that reach the pedals and the driving position. RACC also cites the mounts among the reasons for vibration when accelerating.[2][8]
3. Rough idle from sensors, air mass meter or intake
Common causeRACE points out that the main cause of a problematic idle is the sensors that read the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft, and that a very dirty air mass meter (MAF) or air filter, the IAC valves or the throttle body and unwanted air intakes also cause it. A MAF with an incorrect signal can give rough idle, jerking and loss of power, and RACE recommends diagnosing before replacing it.[1][9][10]
4. Dirty or worn injectors, EGR valve or high-pressure pump (diesel)
Possible causeOn diesels, RACE lists as causes of rough idle blocked or worn injectors, a dirty EGR valve and high-pressure pump faults.[1]
Faults with with the injectorsFaults with with the EGR valve
5. Damaged dual-mass flywheel or worn clutch
Possible causeRACE includes among the signs of a faulty dual-mass flywheel abnormal noises or vibrations at idle or while driving, knocks when starting or stopping the engine and vibrations or jerking when pulling away, and warns that an incorrect diagnosis of the dual-mass flywheel is relatively common. RACC adds transmission or clutch problems among the engine faults that produce vibrations.[3][8]

6. Poor compression or worn cylinders
UncommonRACC mentions poor compression and worn cylinders among the engine faults that cause unwanted vibrations, without going into more detail.[8]
7. If it is not the engine: wheels, CV joints or brakes
Possible causeRACC divides vibration when accelerating between damaged wheels or rims, CV joints with a deteriorated boot and brakes with seized calipers or warped discs, and Carglass says that wheel vibrations appear from around 100 km/h while engine ones are noticeable even with the car stationary. RACE covers tyre imbalance, steering and warped discs in its general article on vibrations.[4][5][8]
Faults with with tyres and wheelsFaults with with the driveshafts and transmission
Depending on what you notice
The car vibrates when accelerating
RACC lists five reasons: damaged wheels or rims, CV joints, engine mounts, engine malfunction (transmission, clutch, compression or cylinders) and brake problems. With worn mounts, RACE describes vibrations that increase as you accelerate and gain speed and that reach the pedals and the driving position.[2][8]
Why a car vibrates, in general
RACE cites worn or badly balanced tyres, misaligned steering, cracked bushes and warped brake discs; Carglass adds the engine. If the vibration appears with the car stationary, it points to the engine; if it appears only at around 100 km/h, to the wheels or suspension. Steering wheel vibrations at speed and when braking have their own guide on MotorFiable.[4][5]
My car shakes when idling
RACE explains that in neutral, with no mechanical load on the transmission, any small combustion fault is immediately transmitted to the chassis as vibration. Carglass agrees that, if the cause is the spark plugs or poor engine running, the vibrations appear from a standstill.[1][4]
The car shakes and the revs rise and fall at idle
RACE puts normal idle at between 700 and 1,000 rpm with the engine at operating temperature and explains that, in the first moments after starting, the speed rises to 1,200 or 1,300 rpm. If the needle fluctuates illogically and there is jerking on starting, it points to the crankshaft or camshaft sensors.[1][9]
What to check first
- Work out when it vibrates: with the car stationary it points to the engine, and from around 100 km/h it usually points to the wheels, according to Carglass. That decides whether you continue with this guide or with the steering wheel and brakes ones.[4]
- Rule out what is normal: RACE explains that, if the engine is cold, it is normal for it to vibrate a little until the oil lubricates, and that the speed rises on starting before settling.[5][9]
- Watch the rev counter in neutral: if the needle fluctuates illogically or there is jerking on starting, RACE suspects the crankshaft or camshaft sensors.[9]
- Ask for a code reading with a diagnostic machine, especially if the engine warning light is on. RACE recommends diagnosing before replacing the air mass meter, and a code such as P0300 indicates a misfire.[7][10]
- Check the maintenance: filters according to the manual, cleaning of the intake system, the electrical system and, on petrol engines, the spark plugs; RACE includes the first three among the key actions against rough idle.[1][6]
- Check whether there is knocking when changing gear or vibrations that reach the pedals and the steering wheel: according to RACE, they are symptoms of worn engine mounts.[2]
Can I keep driving?
Urgency: Monitor
A slight, steady vibration does not force you to stop, but nor should it be left: RACC warns that vibrating when accelerating can be a fault that compromises safety and stability. If the vibration becomes very pronounced and the car threatens to stall during the journey, RACE advises parking in a safe place and calling breakdown assistance. With a P0300 code, Autodoc Club says that driving is not a road safety hazard, but that the car should be taken to a garage as soon as possible.[1][7][8]
How much it costs to fix
Indicative prices published by the sources cited; they depend on the car and the garage.
| Repair | Price |
|---|---|
| New engine mount (part only; RACE gives the range depending on whether it is rubber-and-metal or hydraulic)[2] | €20 – €100 |
| Replacing faulty bushes (RACE range; used for damping, gearbox or engine, and it does not detail labour)[5] | €30 – €60 |
| Spark plug (part only, depending on the electrode material)[6] | €3 – €20 |
| Complete clutch set with flywheel, labour and VAT on an average compact car (RACE says it can reach about €1,500)[3] | €1,500 |

Frequently asked questions
Why does the car vibrate?
RACE lists worn or badly balanced tyres, misaligned steering, cracked bushes and warped brake discs, and Carglass adds engine problems such as faulty spark plugs, switched-off cylinders or faulty coils. Engine vibration is noticeable even with the car stationary; wheel vibration, from around 100 km/h.[4][5]
Why does the car vibrate when I accelerate?
RACC cites damaged wheels or rims, CV joints, engine mounts, engine malfunction and the brakes. RACE adds that, with worn engine mounts, the vibrations are noticeable mainly as you accelerate and gain speed and reach the pedals and the steering wheel.[2][8]
Is it normal for the car to vibrate a little on a cold start?
Yes, up to a point. RACE explains that, with a cold engine, it is normal for it to vibrate a little until the oil lubricates, and that in the first moments after starting the revs rise to 1,200 or 1,300 rpm before settling.[5][9]
Why does the car shake in neutral?
According to RACE, in neutral any small combustion fault is transmitted to the chassis as vibration. The causes it cites are, on diesels, injectors, EGR and high-pressure pump, and on petrol engines, spark plugs, coils, the IAC valve or throttle body and unwanted air intakes, as well as a very dirty air mass meter or air filter.[1]
Could it be the engine mounts?
Yes. RACE describes them as parts that absorb the engine's movement; when they wear, knocking appears when changing gear and vibrations that reach the pedals, the gear lever and the steering wheel. A new engine mount costs between 20 and 100 euros, depending on the type (prices in Spain).[2]
