Jerking or juddering when accelerating: causes and the faults that trigger it
A car jerks almost always because of a fuel supply fault (injectors, fuel filter, pump), an ignition fault (spark plugs, coils), an intake and sensor fault (air flow meter, throttle valve) or, if the jerk comes when releasing the clutch or changing gear, the clutch and transmission. On diesels, the injectors, the EGR valve and the particulate filter weigh more heavily. Since similar symptoms come from different faults, the specific cause can only be confirmed by a code read-out with a diagnostic scanner.[1][2][3][4]
89 documented faults cause it in 73 engines. The most important:
- Critical severity: Excessive oil consumption and engine failure · 1.2 TCe
- High severity: N53 piezoelectric injector failure · BMW N52 / N53
- High severity: i-SHIFT automated gearbox actuator failure · 1.2 / 1.4 / 1.8 i-VTEC
What it means
The car moves in fits and starts or hesitates when you press the accelerator. It may be caused by misfires, injectors, sensors, the EGR valve or, on automatic gearboxes, the clutch.
General explanation from MotorFiable. How it shows up in each engine, with sources, is in the list of faults.
What to do now
Garage soon
Check whether any warning lights are on and ask for a fault code read-out. If the jerking comes with a flashing engine warning light, slow down and go to a garage.
Most common causes
From most to least likely according to the sources. Under each cause, the part and the related OBD codes.
1. Dirty, worn or faulty injectors
Common causeRACE cites faulty injectors among the causes of jerking and points out that on diesels they give more trouble, especially beyond 200,000 km, because they work at higher pressure than petrol ones. When they fail, the car jerks and loses power; Autodoc Club adds that dirt gradually clogs the injection passages and hinders fuel flow.[1][2][5]
2. Worn spark plugs, ignition coils or glow plugs
Common causeA dirty or worn spark plug gives a weak or irregular spark and does not ignite the fuel at the right moment; a deteriorated coil also makes the car jerk. On diesels, Autopista mentions deteriorated glow plugs. Autodoc Club associates code P0300 (misfire) with lack of power and hesitation when accelerating.[2][3][6][7]
3. Fuel supply: fuel filter, pump or poor-quality fuel
Common causeAccording to RACE, a dirty fuel filter restricts flow and unbalances the mixture, and a faulty pump does not deliver the necessary pressure: both cause jerking and loss of power. Autonoción links rhythmic jerking at constant speed to a saturated filter or dirty injectors, and Autodoc Club points out that if it starts shortly after refuelling, the fuel should be suspected.[1][2][3][6]
4. Air flow meter, air filter or throttle valve
Possible causeIf the air flow meter (MAF) misreads the air coming in, the ECU prepares an incorrect mixture and the car accelerates unevenly. A dirty air filter, according to Autonoción, accentuates jerking on climbs, and Autodoc Club adds that a faulty throttle valve leaves the cylinders with too little or too much air. Coches.com notes that with a faulty air flow meter, the engine warning light should come on.[1][2][3][8]
5. Blocked EGR valve, catalytic converter or particulate filter
Possible causeThe EGR builds up carbon and oil because of the high temperatures (Autodoc Club), and Autonoción includes it among diesel problems, especially with a lot of urban use. A blocked catalytic converter, because its mesh traps particles and clogs, also causes jerking, and a clogged particulate filter can give loss of power and jerking.[2][3][6]
Faults with with the EGR valveFaults with with the particulate filter
6. Faulty turbo
Possible causeRACE explains that a turbo that is not working properly does not deliver the pressurised air the engine needs, and this shows up as jerking when accelerating.[1]
7. Clutch, dual-mass flywheel or gearbox
Possible causeCoches.com considers the clutch the most likely reason for the car shaking when accelerating from a standstill, and RACE describes jerking when pulling away due to a warped plate after excessive overheating. Autonoción places it in the clutch or gearbox when the jerk comes on releasing the pedal or changing gear, and Coches.com points to the transmission control unit in an automatic that jerks when changing gear.[3][8][9]
Faults with with the clutchFaults with with the dual-mass flywheelFaults with with the automatic gearbox
8. Accelerator pedal or cable
UncommonAutodoc Club cites a worn accelerator cable as a cause of jerking in cars with a cable. On those with an electronic accelerator, RACE explains that if the pedal's internal resistance fails the car starts to jerk or simply does not respond.[2][10]
Depending on what you notice
The diesel car jerks when accelerating
On diesels, RACE and Autonoción agree in pointing to the injectors, which work at high pressure and wear or get dirty especially beyond 200,000 km. Autonoción adds the EGR valve, which fills with carbon in urban use, and the clogged particulate filter.[1][3]
The petrol car jerks when accelerating
On petrol cars, Autonoción focuses on the spark plugs, coils and air flow meter, and Autodoc Club adds the fuel and air filters, the catalytic converter, the EGR and the throttle valve. If the jerking appears only when cold and goes away as the engine warms up, Autonoción points to spark plugs, coils or temperature sensors.[2][3]
The diesel car jerks at low revs
For this case Autopista lists a blocked fuel filter, contaminated injectors, a tired fuel pump, a dirty EGR, deteriorated glow plugs and a worn clutch or old oil in the gearbox. RMotion adds that sometimes it is enough just to be driving in a gear that is too high for the speed and engine load.[4][6]
The car jerks and loses power
RACE links that pair of symptoms with faulty injectors and with a fuel pump that does not deliver the necessary pressure. Autonoción adds that on a climb or under load the jerking gets worse if power is lacking because of a blocked fuel filter, a clogged catalytic converter or a dirty air filter.[1][3][5]
My car jerks in first and second gear
No source treats first and second gear as a separate case, but Coches.com points to the clutch as the most likely cause of jerking when accelerating from a standstill and RACE links it to a warped plate when pulling away. If the jerk is felt just as you release the pedal, Autonoción also points to the clutch or gearbox.[3][8][9]
The car jerks in high gears or in low gears
RMotion says that driving in a gear that is too high for the speed and load can cause jerking by itself, and that changing down restores normal operation. If the jerk appears when changing gear, Autonoción attributes it to the clutch or gearbox; we have not found a source that distinguishes low gears.[3][4]
What to check first
- Note when it happens: only when cold, at constant speed, on a climb or under load, at low revs or just as you release the clutch. Autonoción and RMotion use precisely that moment to narrow down the cause.[3][4]
- Rule out the simple things: if it started shortly after refuelling, suspect the fuel, and if you are in a gear that is too high for the speed, change down to see whether it goes away.[2][4]
- See whether the engine warning light is on: according to Autonoción, a check engine light together with jerking more likely points to an ignition coil or a sensor.[3]
- Ask for a code read-out with a diagnostic scanner before replacing parts: RMotion warns that parts should not be replaced on symptoms alone, because the same symptoms come from different faults.[4][7]
- Keep maintenance up to date (fuel and air filters, spark plugs) according to the manufacturer's schedule, which RACE presents as the way to avoid many trips to the garage.[1][2]
Can I keep driving?
Urgency: Garage soon
None of the sources sets a time limit or mileage for which you can keep driving with jerking, but all ask you not to ignore it: Autonoción warns that it can lead to much more serious faults, Autopista points out that irregular combustion can end up affecting the turbo, the catalytic converter or the fuel pump, and Coches.com warns that sharp or prolonged jerking can be very dangerous. The sensible course is to ask for a diagnostic scan soon and not keep driving with heavy jerking.[3][6][8]
How much it costs to fix
Indicative prices published by the sources cited; they depend on the car and the garage.
| Repair | Price |
|---|---|

Frequently asked questions
Why does my car jerk?
According to RACE, the reasons usually lie in the fuel supply (injectors, pump and fuel filter), the ignition (spark plugs) or lack of maintenance, as well as the air flow meter and the turbo. Autonoción adds the EGR and particulate filter on diesels, and the clutch or gearbox if the jerk comes on releasing the pedal or changing gear.[1][3]
Is jerking more typical of diesel or petrol?
It happens on both. RACE points out that injectors give more trouble on diesels, because they work at higher pressure, especially beyond 200,000 km, while on petrol cars Autonoción focuses on the spark plugs, coils and air flow meter.[1][3]
Could the fuel be to blame?
Yes. RACE includes poor-quality fuel among the causes, and Autodoc Club says that if the car starts jerking shortly after refuelling, you have to consider whether the fuel is wrong or degraded.[1][2]
Can I just swap spark plugs or injectors by eye to try?
RMotion advises against it: parts should not be replaced on symptoms alone, because a diagnostic scanner can detect error codes and locate the failing system. A code such as P0300, for example, indicates a misfire, but Autodoc Club lists several possible causes, from spark plugs and coils to injectors or air leaks.[4][7]
