How it works and why it fails
12 V battery
The 12 V battery starts the engine and powers the electronics when the car is off. Modern cars have many modules that stay awake for a while after locking, and a module that does not go to sleep (infotainment, alarm, telematics) can drain it in a few days. On hybrids and EVs, a weak 12 V battery prevents starting even if the high-voltage battery is charged.
What to do
If the car will not start after several days parked, test the battery and ask for a parasitic drain test. Batteries in cars with Start&Stop are specific (EFB or AGM): always fit the correct type and register it in the control unit if the manufacturer requires it.

Frequently asked questions
Which engines have the most faults with the 12 V battery?
By severity and frequency, the 2.0 and 2.5 Hybrid (the 12 V battery goes flat if the car sits unused for several days, medium severity), the E-Tech Híbrido (12 V battery going flat or needing early replacement, medium severity), the 1.5 Hybrid (12 V battery going flat while parked, medium severity) and the Honda e:HEV / i-MMD (12 V battery going flat and hybrid system failing to start, low severity).
Which cars have problems with the 12 V battery?
Among those we have analysed: Hyundai Ioniq 5 (faulty ICCU: 12 V battery drain and loss of drive power), Ford Galaxy III (acid leak from the 12 V battery (campaign 18P11)), BMW Serie 6 E63/E64 (battery drain and loose positive cable), Ford Mustang Mach-E (electronic door latches that lock when the 12 V battery is flat), Hyundai Ioniq 6 (ICCU unit fault and 12 V battery drain), Hyundai Kona I (12 V battery discharges by itself and leaves the car unable to start), Toyota C-HR I (the 12 V battery goes flat if the car sits unused for several days) and Fiat 500 (risk of the auxiliary battery overheating on mild-hybrid versions (October 2022 campaign)). In total, 84 cars with documented faults with the 12 V battery.
How much does it cost to repair a fault with the 12 V battery?
It depends a lot on the engine or car. At an independent garage, from €120 to €500, including VAT, based on the 3 faults with a documented cost. The most expensive is the 12 V battery goes flat if the car sits unused for several days (Toyota C-HR I).
What symptoms does a fault with the 12 V battery cause?
The most frequently cited in the documented faults: battery goes flat while the car is parked, hard starting or engine will not start, intermittent electronic warnings or sensor faults, electric charging failure or interruption, hybrid system fault warning light or message and gradual loss of power.
