BMW N47 (N47D20 / N47C16 / N47C20)Timing chain
Rear timing chain stretch and breakage on the BMW N47
Why this rating?
Critical severity: It can destroy the engine or gearbox, or affects safety.
Frequency very frequent: It is the N47's most cited and best-documented problem, with hundreds of complaints and court cases in several countries, a BMW technical campaign for the earliest units and a design change (front-mounted chain) on the successor B47 engine, all signs that it was a systemic fault and not isolated cases.[1][2][10][11][12]
Symptoms
- A metallic rattle or ticking in the first few seconds after a cold start, especially noticeable at around 1,000-1,500 rpm, which usually fades as the engine warms up.[2][5][8]Chain noise: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- Vibrations or a less smooth idle than normal as the chain loses tension.[8]Vibrations: other faults that cause it · Monitor
- Engine warning light on when the ECU detects a timing mismatch between the crankshaft and the camshafts.[13]Engine warning light: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- In the worst case, the chain breaks without warning and the engine stops dead, even while driving.[7][9]Engine stalls: other faults that cause it · As soon as possible
- If the breakage has damaged pistons or valves, a serious internal knocking appears, which makes it inadvisable to keep driving.[14]Engine knock: other faults that cause it · As soon as possible
Why it happens
The original design combines a weak hydraulic tensioner, with a slow response and a narrow oil passage that clogs easily, and plastic guides that crack with heat and with ageing of the oil.[1][3]
As it loses tension, the chain slaps against the guides and sprockets, which speeds up its own wear until it skips teeth or snaps.[2][8]
Oil degraded by long change intervals, short cold journeys and the rear position of the chain, which makes any inspection or preventive maintenance impossible without removing the engine, all aggravate the problem.[1][9]
If it is not repaired: The N47 is an interference engine: if the chain breaks or skips teeth, the pistons and valves can collide, with damage ranging from bent valves to wrecked pistons and cylinder head. In the worst case, the only option is to replace the entire engine.[8][14]
Affected cars and years
It affects, to varying degrees, the entire N47D20 production and its MINI derivatives N47C16/N47C20. Units built between 2007 and 2009, and in particular those covered by BMW's technical campaign between February 2007 and June 2008, account for the most serious cases, although there are documented failures on later engines, even up to 2015.[1][3][10][11]

How much it costs to repair
Includes: Complete replacement of the chain kit, tensioners, guides, sprockets, gaskets and rear crankshaft seal, with the engine removed to reach the rear timing and around 16 hours of labour.[4][5][6][7][8]
These are preventive replacement prices (chain not yet broken) at independent workshops specialising in BMW/MINI. If the chain breaks and damages pistons, valves or the cylinder head, the cost soars: there is a documented case in Spain with an invoice of €8,339.88 and estimates from other workshops of up to €9,000 when the whole engine has to be rebuilt or replaced.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs
How to check for it before buying a used car
- Start the car from cold yourself and listen closely to the first few seconds: a metallic rattle at around 1,000-1,500 rpm that disappears as the engine warms up is the most cited warning sign.[2][5][8]
- Ask for the service history and explicitly ask whether the timing chain has been checked or replaced, with an invoice; on units registered before 2011 the documented risk is higher.[1][9]
- If possible, ask a BMW/MINI specialist workshop to measure the chain stretch with the specific tools before you close the purchase.[15]
- Be wary of cars with very long oil change intervals: degraded oil speeds up wear of the tensioner and guides.[9]
Parts needed
The part or kit that fixes this fault, according to the sources.
- Buy part at Autodoc (affiliate link, opens in a new tab)
Reinforced timing chain kit (chain, tensioner, guides and sprockets)[6][16]
Replaces the original components, often with a kit with reinforced guides and tensioner, to reduce the risk of the fault recurring.
- Buy part at Autodoc (affiliate link, opens in a new tab)
Rear crankshaft seal[6]
Routinely replaced when the engine is removed to reach the chain, as it sits right behind the timing sprockets.

Complete N47D20 engine (rebuilt or from a breaker)[8]
An alternative when the chain has broken and wrecked pistons, valves or the cylinder head; in those cases replacing the whole engine can work out cheaper than repairing it part by part.

How to prevent it
- Shorten the oil and filter change interval to below what the on-board computer indicates, especially if the car does a lot of short urban journeys and cold starts.[2][9]
- Consider preventive replacement of the chain, tensioner and guides if the car has passed 100,000-120,000 km with no record of it having been done, instead of waiting for it to fail.[8][17]
- If you notice the characteristic rattle when cold, do not wait: get the car checked straight away, because on an interference engine a breakage can destroy it.[14]

Technical campaign to replace the tensioner and, if necessary, the timing chain
According to the Irish and British press, BMW carried out a technical campaign to replace the timing chain tensioner, and the chain if necessary, on N47 units built between February 2007 and June 2008. Outside that period, and once the warranty has ended, BMW has handled failures case by case through goodwill contributions, without acknowledging a widespread manufacturing defect or calling a formal recall in the United Kingdom, Ireland or the rest of the European Union.[10][11]

Owner complaints and a ruling attributing the defect to the manufacturer
The OCU (Spanish consumer organisation) has published complaints from owners of BMWs with the N47 engine over timing chain breakage, including refusals by BMW to cover the repair on the grounds that the servicing had not been carried out at an official dealer. A Spanish specialist outlet also cites a 2018 court ruling that is said to have attributed the defect to the manufacturer, although we have not been able to consult the full text of that decision.[2][7]
What owners say
Frequently asked questions
Why does the BMW N47's timing chain fail so often?
Because it combines a weak hydraulic tensioner, plastic guides that crack over time and an oil passage that clogs easily, all in a rear position that makes it hard to detect the problem before it fails and complicates the repair by forcing the engine to be separated from the gearbox.[1][3]
Which N47 years are the most affected?
Those built between 2007 and 2009 account for the most serious cases, and BMW carried out a technical campaign for units built between February 2007 and June 2008. Even so, there are documented failures on later engines, up to the end of production around 2014-2015.[1][10][11]
Does BMW cover the repair?
There is no formal recall in Europe. Outside the 2007-2008 technical campaign and the warranty, BMW assesses each case individually with goodwill contributions, without admitting a widespread manufacturing defect; some owners have turned to consumer associations or the courts to claim.[7][9][10]
How much does it cost to replace the chain preventively?
At independent Spanish workshops specialising in BMW/MINI, the quote is around €1,590 to €3,000 with the complete kit and the labour of removal. If the chain breaks, the cost can exceed €8,000-9,000 if the engine has to be repaired or replaced.[4][5][6]

Other BMW N47 faults
- Critical severityFrequency: CommonIntakeBroken intake manifold swirl flapsYes: the N47's intake manifold has plastic swirl flaps that, with diesel soot and the passing years, can crack, come loose and be sucked into the cylinder, with a risk of seriously damaging the piston, cylinder head and valves.
- High severityFrequency: CommonTurboTurbo and wastegate valve failureThe N47's turbo does not usually fail from general wear, but because of failure of the wastegate valve, which regulates boost and can seize or lose adjustment, sending fuel consumption soaring; oil leaks from the turbo itself are also common.Repair (garage): €900–€1,800
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlClogged or seized EGR valveYes, as on most diesels of its generation: the N47's EGR valve seizes or clogs with carbon, especially on cars used in town, causing an unstable idle, jerking and loss of power; it is not usually a serious fault if it is cleaned or replaced in time.Repair (garage): €400–€1,500
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonClutchDual-mass flywheel wear (manual gearbox versions)Yes: on manual-gearbox BMW N47s, the dual-mass flywheel can wear, especially after a lot of town mileage or driving in high gears at low revs; the typical symptoms are vibrations, a metallic rattle at idle and jerking when pulling away.Appears at around 150,000 km
More faults with the timing chain on other engines and cars
- Critical severityFrequency: Very frequent1.5 BlueHDiWear and breakage of the 7 mm chain between the camshaftsIn 1.5 BlueHDi engines built between October 2017 and January 2023, the 7 mm chain linking the camshafts can stretch and break, causing serious engine damage. Stellantis has recalled them and covers the fault for 10 years or 240,000 km.Repair (garage): €730–€820
- Critical severityFrequency: Very frequent1.2 and 1.4 TSITiming chain stretch and tensioner failure (EA111)On the 1.2 and 1.4 TSI EA111 (2006-2015) the chain can stretch and the tensioner fall short; if the chain jumps a tooth, the valves hit the pistons. Volkswagen admitted the defect in 2012 and revised the chain and tensioner between 2010 and 2011.Repair (garage): €700–€1,400Appears at around 30,000 km
- Critical severityFrequency: Very frequentOM651Timing chain stretch and tensioner failureYes: the OM651 timing chain can stretch prematurely, above all on units built up to 2013, and in 2014-2015 Mercedes-Benz recalled around 114,000 vehicles in Germany over a defective sealing ring in the tensioner. A metallic rattle on a cold start is the first sign.Repair (garage): €2,000–€3,500Appears at around 120,000 km
- Critical severityFrequency: Very frequent2.0 Ingenium diéselTiming chain stretchYes: the timing chain on the 2.0 Ingenium diesel can slip or stretch prematurely and put the engine out of time, with a risk of serious failure. It is documented on the Evoque, Discovery Sport, XE, E-Pace and F-Pace, with engine failures between 90,000 and 130,000 km in several owner reports.Repair (garage): €4,000–€7,000Appears at around 90,000 km
- Critical severityFrequency: Common1.3 MultijetTiming chain stretch and tensioner failureYes: the timing chain's hydraulic tensioner can lose pressure and let the chain slacken; if it skips teeth or breaks, it can destroy the engine. It is a documented problem on Fiat, Opel, Suzuki and Ford cars with this engine, mainly linked to long oil change intervals.Repair (garage): €350–€550Appears at around 70,000 km
- Critical severityFrequency: Common1.6 CRDiTiming chain stretchThe two timing chains of the U2 D4FB (one of which also drives the high-pressure pump) tend to stretch at around 120,000-150,000 km, with a characteristic metallic rattle. If left unattended, the chain can jump teeth and cause the pistons and valves to collide.Appears at around 120,000 km
