Dualogic gearbox: faults and reliability

Fiat Dualogic (Magneti Marelli) — en Lancia, D.F.N. · Fiat and Lancia

The Dualogic is the automated manual gearbox that Fiat has fitted since 2003 to models such as the 500, Panda, Grande Punto/Punto, Doblò and Qubo, and that Lancia sells as D.F.N. on the Ypsilon. It has no systemic fault acknowledged by the manufacturer, but there are recurring testimonies of jerking on every gearchange, clutches that wear out early, and actuator faults that make the gearbox drop into neutral on its own while driving.[1][2][3]

Which Dualogic versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • With caution

There is no systemic fault acknowledged by the manufacturer, but owner testimonies repeatedly document jerking and an interruption of drive on every gearchange (inherent to the design of a single clutch), as well as minority cases of clutches worn out early and of actuator or hydraulic pressure faults that make the gearbox drop into neutral on its own while driving; the car should be thoroughly test-driven, weighing whether the driving comfort, very different from a conventional automatic, is worth its low cost.[2][3]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

What the Dualogic is

Dualogic is the trade name Fiat gives to its automated manual gearbox (AMT): mechanically it is a conventional 5-speed manual gearbox with a single dry clutch, but an electrohydraulic actuator managed by a control unit presses the clutch and moves the gear selector instead of the driver, who can operate it with the lever, with steering-wheel paddles, or leave it in fully automatic mode. The system, developed by Magneti Marelli and manufactured by Graziano Trasmissioni, is the same technology that Alfa Romeo sold as Selespeed (debuted in 1999 on the Alfa Romeo 156) and that Lancia markets as D.F.N. (Dolce Far Niente); on the most recent Fiat vans it was renamed Comfort-Matic.[1][4][6][7]

Fiat gradually rolled out the Dualogic across its range of small and compact cars over more than a decade: the second-generation Fiat Panda adopted it in 2004 with the 60 hp 1.2 Fire engine, the Grande Punto offered it from its launch in 2005 (77 hp petrol and 90 hp diesel) and kept it, as the Punto Evo and Punto, until 2018 with the 1.4 Fire and the 1.3 Multijet, the Fiat 500 has had it since its debut in 2007 with the 1.2, 1.4 and 0.9 TwinAir engines, and the Doblò fitted it in its second generation (2010-2022) with the 95 hp 1.4 Fire. Lancia adopted the same technology, under the name D.F.N., on the Ypsilon: first on the second generation (2003-2011) with the 105 hp 1.3 Multijet and then on the third (from 2011) with the 0.9 TwinAir. The Fiat Qubo (and its commercial twin, the Fiorino) also offered it with the 1.3 JTDm/Multijet diesel; in the 2016 facelift, Fiat began calling this same evolved technology Comfort-Matic on its vans, so the most recent Qubo units may carry the system under that name instead of Dualogic.[5][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15]

Neither the manufacturer nor any official body has acknowledged a systemic fault with the Dualogic, and we have found no safety campaign associated with this gearbox. The picture that emerges from the owner testimonies and the used-car buyer's guides consulted is of a technology with its own way of working, with jerking and a noticeable break in drive on every gearchange, very different from a conventional automatic, which one German guide advises against on comfort grounds, together with minority but repeated cases of clutches that wear out early and of actuator or hydraulic pressure faults that make the gearbox drop into neutral on its own while driving.[2][3]

    Dualogic 5-speed (2003-present)

This page documents a single version because the sources consulted do not describe distinct hardware generations with names of their own, unlike other dual-clutch gearboxes: it is the same mechanical base (a 5-speed manual gearbox) with an electrohydraulic actuator, first fitted to the Fiat Panda (2004) and Grande Punto (2005), extended to the Fiat 500 (2007) and Doblò (2010), adopted by Lancia under the name D.F.N. on the Ypsilon (from 2003) and renamed Comfort-Matic on the Fiat Qubo/Fiorino vans from 2016.[1][5][7][8][9][11][13]
