Problems with the mechatronic unit: symptoms, cost and affected models

We have documented 13 faults with the mechatronic unit in 12 gearboxes and 1 car, affecting 147 models of car in our database. The most important by severity and frequency: mechatronic unit failure: pressure accumulator, pump and cracked housing (DSG7 DQ200 gearbox), control unit (TCU) failure and limp mode (Multitronic gearbox) and jerking, hesitation and mechatronic faults at low speed (7DCT gearbox). At an independent garage, the repair costs from €600 to €3,100 depending on the engine or car.[1][2]

Gearbox mechatronic unit

The mechatronic unit is the hydraulic and electronic brain of an automatic or dual-clutch gearbox: it links the gearbox control unit with the solenoid valves and sensors that operate the clutches and gears. When it fails, the gearbox goes into emergency mode, loses gears or locks up.

What to do

A gearbox warning, loss of gears or a gearbox that stays in a single gear require a diagnosis: sometimes an update or an internal part is enough, and at other times the whole unit is replaced. Ask about extended warranties: some manufacturers offered them for the mechatronic unit.

Problems with the mechatronic unit by engine

From most to least important (severity × frequency). Each page details the affected versions and years, symptoms, cost and how to check for it.

  1. 1High severityVery frequentFrequency: Very frequentDSG7 DQ200Mechatronic unit failure: pressure accumulator, pump and cracked housingYes: the mechatronic unit is the DQ200's most cited weak point. Its pressure accumulator and hydraulic pump can fail because of a housing design defect, with fault warnings, limp mode or loss of drive; Volkswagen has acknowledged the problem with service actions and software updates.Repair (garage): €600–€2,200
  2. 2High severityCommonFrequency: CommonMultitronicControl unit (TCU) failure and limp modeYes: the multitronic control unit, especially in the 01J code (up to 2007), is one of its best-documented weak points. Overheating with oil seeping into the control unit causes fault warnings and limp mode and, if ignored, can end up damaging the gearbox itself.
  3. 3High severityCommonFrequency: Common7DCTJerking, hesitation and mechatronic faults at low speedYes: several sources based on owner accounts name the 7DCT as one of the most-cited weak points of these models, with jerking and hesitation on pulling away, missing gears (sometimes reverse) and, on the most affected diesels, more than a third of the accounts mentioning gearbox faults.
  4. 4High severityCommonFrequency: Common7G-Tronic / 9G-TronicConductor plate and speed sensor failure (limp mode)Yes: one of the most cited weak points of the 7G-Tronic (722.9) is the internal conductor plate, which integrates the turbine, output and intermediate-shaft speed sensors; if it fails it can trigger a limp mode with delayed shifts or harsh jerks, although it does not always require replacing the whole gearbox.
  5. 5High severityCommonFrequency: CommonZF 6HPValve body and mechatronic failure: erratic shifts or a locked-up gearboxYes, and it can be serious: there are documented failures of the ZF 6HP valve body or mechatronic unit on BMW, Audi and Land Rover models from around 90,000-100,000 km, with cases that go as far as preventing a gear from engaging (including reverse) and dealer quotes of €6,000 to €10,000.Repair: €6,000–€10,000Appears at around 90,000 km
  6. 6High severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalDSG6 DQ250Mechatronic unit failure: solenoid valves and temperature sensorYes, although less than on the dry-clutch DQ200: the DQ250 mechatronic unit can fail because of defective solenoid valves or an incorrect reading of the clutch temperature, with limp mode, harsh shifts or fault warnings on the dashboard. Volkswagen recalled vehicles in the US and Australia in 2009 for this reason.Repair (garage): €850–€3,100
  7. 7High severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalEAT6/EAT8Valve body failure leading to immobilisation or gearbox replacementYes, though in a minority of cases: there are documented failures of the EAT6/EAT8 valve body with limp mode, and several owners have had to replace the whole gearbox after very few kilometres, from around 4,200 km in one case.Repair: €2,000–€9,000
  8. 8High severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalEDCControl electronics fault: "check gearbox" warning and loss of gearsYes: a fault in the sensors or switches that tell the control unit the position of each clutch (the "manocontact") can make the EDC gearbox lose the gears associated with one of the two clutches, for example only the even gears or only reverse, with a "check gearbox" warning on the dashboard.
  9. 9High severityOccasionalFrequency: Occasional7G-DCTMechatronics or control unit failure: limp mode and loss of gearsYes: a minority of owners document electronic failures of the 7G-DCT's mechatronics or control unit -sensors, synchronisation between shafts or the control unit itself- that trigger a limp mode with loss of gears or, in the most serious cases, immobilise the car.
  10. 10High severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalDSG7 DQ381/DQ500Mechatronic unit and oil pump failureYes, though less than on the dry DQ200: the mechatronic unit, which on the DQ381 includes an auxiliary electric oil pump, can fail and leave the gearbox in limp mode or without enough pressure. Specialists describe it as mechanical wear, not a systemic design defect.Repair (garage): €1,300–€2,200
  11. 11High severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalZF 8HPMechatronic failure as the gearbox ages (sometimes with reverse)Yes, although in a minority of cases: there are documented ZF 8HP mechatronic failures on BMW after 120,000-130,000 km, costing €1,400 to €3,500, and also control unit or electronic selector faults on Audi and Land Rover.Repair: €1,400–€3,500
  12. 12Medium severityCommonFrequency: CommonPowerShiftCold hesitation and electronic faults in the control module (TCM)Both the DPS6 and the 6DCT450 depend on a control module (TCM) that manages the clutches; there is cold hesitation, resonance at idle and occasional electronic failures, and Ford has revised the software several times without a single fix.

Frequently asked questions

Which engines have the most faults with the mechatronic unit?

By severity and frequency, the DSG7 DQ200 (mechatronic unit failure: pressure accumulator, pump and cracked housing, high severity), the Multitronic (control unit (TCU) failure and limp mode, high severity), the 7DCT (jerking, hesitation and mechatronic faults at low speed, high severity), the 7G-Tronic / 9G-Tronic (conductor plate and speed sensor failure (limp mode), high severity), the ZF 6HP (valve body and mechatronic failure: erratic shifts or a locked-up gearbox, high severity) and the DSG6 DQ250 (mechatronic unit failure: solenoid valves and temperature sensor, high severity). In total we have documented 12 gearboxes with faults with the mechatronic unit.

Which cars have problems with the mechatronic unit?

Among those we have analysed: Audi Q5 I (audi Q5 S tronic gearbox faults: jerking, vibrations and mechatronics).

How much does it cost to repair a fault with the mechatronic unit?

It depends a lot on the engine or car. At an independent garage, from €600 to €3,100; at a dealer, from €1,400 to €10,000, including VAT, based on the 6 faults with a documented cost. The most expensive is valve body and mechatronic failure: erratic shifts or a locked-up gearbox (ZF 6HP gearbox).

What symptoms does a fault with the mechatronic unit cause?

The most frequently cited in the documented faults: automatic gearbox fault warning, sudden loss of power (limp mode), gearbox will not select gears or drops into neutral, visible oil leak, judder when pulling away or at low speed (automatic gearbox) and gearbox or clutch noise or rattle.
