1.4 D-4D engine: faults and reliability

Toyota 1.4 D-4D (1ND-TV) · Toyota and MINI

Yes, generally: the 1.4 D-4D (1ND-TV) is one of Toyota's most widespread small diesels, with a reputation for reasonable reliability. The documented weak points are the injectors, the turbo, the EGR valve, the diesel particulate filter (on versions that have one) and the clutch and dual-mass flywheel assembly, with cases spread between 2002 and 2018 across the Yaris, Corolla, Auris, Urban Cruiser, Verso-S and MINI One D.[1][2][3][4][5]

Which 1.4 D-4D versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • 1.4 D-4D 75 (1ND-TV, 75 hp, 2002-2005)

    2002–2005 · 75 hp · 1ND-TV

    With caution

The injectors, turbo and clutch and dual-mass flywheel assembly are documented on the first-generation Yaris and on the MINI One D with this same output; it is worth checking the history of these parts before buying.[3][5]

  • 1.4 D-4D 90 (1ND-TV, 88-90 hp, 2004-2018)

    2004–2018 · 88–90 hp · 1ND-TV

    With caution

This is the version with the most documented cases of injector, turbo, EGR valve and clutch and dual-mass flywheel faults and, on units with a particulate filter, DPF clogging; it is worth checking these points before buying, although we have not found a pattern as serious as that of other, larger Toyota diesels.[2][4][7]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

Known faults of the 1.4 D-4D

Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).

  1. 1High severityCommonFrequency: CommonTurboTurbocharger failureYes: the 1.4 D-4D's turbo is documented as failing on the Yaris, Corolla, Auris and MINI One D, sometimes prematurely (one case at 15,000 km covered under warranty) and other times after seizing alongside high oil consumption.Appears at around 15,000 km
  2. 2Medium severityCommonFrequency: CommonInjectionInjector wear and failureYes: the common-rail injectors on the 1.4 D-4D are documented as failing on the Yaris, Auris and MINI One D, with symptoms of jerking, noise and the engine warning light on; one source describes the problem as "chronic" on the MINI One D's engine.
  3. 3Medium severityCommonFrequency: CommonEmissions controlClogged diesel particulate filter (DPF)Yes, on units with a standard-fit particulate filter: the 1.4 D-4D's DPF fills with soot on short trips, with the warning light on and, in one documented Auris case, a complete replacement at 236,000 km.
  4. 4Medium severityCommonFrequency: CommonClutchPremature clutch and dual-mass flywheel wearThe 1.4 D-4D's clutch is frequently documented, almost always above 84,000 km, although there is the odd clearly premature case (a Yaris with the clutch replaced at 28,000 km); the dual-mass flywheel also fails, with proportionally more weight on the MINI One D.Appears at around 84,000 km
  5. 5Medium severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalEmissions controlEGR valve clogged with sootYes, though with fewer cases than on other Toyota diesels: the 1.4 D-4D's EGR valve clogs with soot, especially on short trips, with cases from around 189,000 km on the Yaris and an inexpensive clean (around €60) that usually resolves it on the Corolla.Appears at around 189,000 km

What the 1.4 D-4D is

The 1ND-TV is a 1.4-litre diesel (1,364 cc, 73 × 81.5 mm), an inline four-cylinder with an aluminium block, an SOHC head with 2 valves per cylinder, common-rail injection (6-hole injectors at up to 1,600 bar) and a timing chain. Toyota offered two turbo configurations, fixed geometry and variable geometry, both with an intercooler, with outputs of 75 to 90 hp depending on the version and maximum torque of up to 205 Nm.[1]

It was built between 2002 and 2018 for the European market (Toyota kept the engine in production for other markets beyond that date) and equipped, among others, the first- and second-generation Yaris, the Corolla (E120/E130, with the 1.4 D-4D specifically between 2004 and 2007), the first- and second-generation Auris, the Urban Cruiser and the Verso-S.[1][6][8][9][10]

Toyota also supplied this engine to BMW for the MINI One D from 2003, within the first-generation MINI (R50/R53, 2001-2006); in the MINI R56 that followed (2006-2013), the Cooper D diesel launched in 2007 uses an engine of PSA/Ford origin and, from 2011, the whole R56 diesel range moves to BMW's own N47, so Toyota's 1.4 D-4D was never fitted to the R56.[11][12][13]

The fiches-auto.fr reliability pages consulted for the Yaris, Corolla, Auris and MINI repeatedly document faults with the injectors, turbo, EGR valve and clutch and dual-mass flywheel throughout the engine's life, as well as clogging of the particulate filter on versions that have one; we have not found a pattern as serious and systematic as that of Toyota's 2.0/2.2 D-4D family (separate page), with repairs that in the sources consulted generally stay below €1,500.[2][3][4][5][7]

Technical data[1][6]

What changed between versions

  1. 2002–2005

    1.4 D-4D 75 (1ND-TV, 75 hp, 2002-2005)

This is the first version of the engine, with a fixed-geometry turbo, no particulate filter and around 75 hp. It was fitted to the first-generation Yaris and was the one Toyota supplied to BMW for the first MINI One D (R50/R53) from 2003.[1][3][5]

  2. 2004–2018

    1.4 D-4D 90 (1ND-TV, 88-90 hp, 2004-2018)

This is the higher-output version (88-90 hp depending on the market), with a variable-geometry turbo and, in its last years of production, a particulate filter to meet the Euro 5 standard. It was the most widespread: it was fitted to the Corolla from 2004, the second-generation Yaris, the first- and second-generation Auris, the Urban Cruiser, the Verso-S and, alongside the 75 hp version, the MINI One D.[1][2][5][6][10]
