1.0 SCe (B4D) engine: faults and reliability
Renault 1.0 SCe (B4D) · Renault and Dacia
The 1.0 SCe (B4D) is a simple, low-power (70-75 hp) naturally aspirated three-cylinder engine, with no serious or systemic faults documented. Its most cited issues are a clutch that can slip or judder when cold and, more occasionally on the Dacia Sandero II, higher-than-normal oil consumption; there is no pattern of faults in the chain-driven timing.[1][2][3]

1.0 SCe 70/75 (B4D, 2014-2024)
2014–2024 · 70–75 hp · B4D
No serious or systemic fault is documented in the reliability sources consulted (117 combined reviews across the three cars). It is worth checking the clutch, with a pattern of slipping or juddering when cold cited independently on the Dacia Sandero II, the Dacia Logan II and the Renault Twingo III, and, in the specific case of the Sandero II, keeping an eye on oil consumption.[1][2][3]
Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.
Known faults of the 1.0 SCe (B4D)
Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).
- 1Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalClutchClutch that slips or judders, especially when coldThe 1.0 SCe can have a clutch that slips or judders, especially with a cold engine. It is the issue that recurs most in the sources consulted, documented independently on the Sandero II, the Logan II and the Twingo III, without being described as a fault that damages the engine.
- 2Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalElectronicsJerking, rough idle or warning light from sensors and ignition coilsThe 1.0 SCe can jerk, run unevenly or light up the engine fault warning light because of sensor faults (lambda sensor), ignition coils or injection management. It is a recurring but minority issue in the sources consulted, unrelated to a mechanical problem with the engine block.
- 3Low severityFrequency: OccasionalLubricationHigher-than-normal oil consumption (especially on the Dacia Sandero II)The Dacia Sandero II with the 1.0 SCe can use more oil than normal, with one documented case of 750 ml every 5,000 km; on the Dacia Logan II and the Renault Twingo III with the same engine this problem is not described in a comparable proportion.
- 4Low severityFrequency: RareTimingChain-driven timing: no documented pattern of faultsUnlike engines with a timing belt, the 1.0 SCe barely records any mentions of the timing in the sources consulted: 1 case out of 117 combined reviews of the Sandero II, the Logan II and the Twingo III, with no further detail. It is not a fault that we can document as a pattern on this engine.

What the 1.0 SCe (B4D) is
The 1.0 SCe (engine code B4D) is an inline three-cylinder petrol engine of 999 cc (71 x 84 mm bore and stroke), naturally aspirated with indirect multipoint injection, designed as a low-cost entry-level engine. Renault presented it in 2014 with the launch of the Twingo III, in the SCe 70 tune (70 hp at 6,000 rpm and 91 Nm at 2,850 rpm), which was later joined by an SCe 75 tune.[4][5]
Dacia adopted it from the 2016 facelift of the Sandero II and Logan II, replacing the old naturally aspirated 1.2 16v engine, as the entry-level option under the name SCe 75.[6][7]
It is a different engine, despite the identical trade name, from the more recent "1.0 SCe" (code H4D) that Renault introduced in 2019 within the "H" family of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance for the Clio V, the Dacia Sandero III and the Logan III, which has its own page on this site. The Renault Clio IV (2012-2019), although this engine is sometimes associated with it, never used it according to the sources consulted: its entry-level naturally aspirated petrol engine remained the 1.2 16v (D4F) throughout its time on sale; the 1.0 SCe only reached the Clio with the fifth generation, already with the more recent H4D engine.[8][9][10]
The Dacia Duster, in both its generations (2010-2017 and 2017-2024), does not use it either: its naturally aspirated petrol engines are the 1.6 105 (K4M) and the 1.6 SCe 115 (H4M), both four-cylinder and of larger displacement, in addition to its TCe turbo versions; that is why we do not include it as an application of this engine. Among the cars that do use it, the reliability sources consulted do not describe any serious or systemic fault: the most cited issues are the clutch (which can slip or judder when cold) and, more occasionally on the Dacia Sandero II, higher-than-normal oil consumption.[1][2][3][11][12]

What changed between versions
2014–2024
1.0 SCe 70/75 (B4D, 2014-2024)
Low-cost entry-level engine, with no design changes noted in the sources consulted over its time on sale: it arrived with the Twingo III in 2014 (SCe 70) and in 2016 spread to the Dacia Sandero II and the Dacia Logan II (SCe 75) as a replacement for the naturally aspirated 1.2 16v.[4][5][6][7]
