How it works and why it fails

Instrument cluster

The instrument cluster shows speed, warning lights and alerts. On cars with a digital cluster it is a screen with its own electronics and software, and a fault can leave you without a speedometer or warning lights, which is why some cases have led to recalls.

What to do

If the cluster goes off, reboots or does not light up on start-up, check whether there is an update or a campaign for your car. Driving without a speedometer or warning lights is dangerous and can be grounds for failing the ITV (the periodic technical inspection in Spain).
