Problems with driver assistance systems: symptoms, cost and affected models
We have documented 65 faults with driver assistance systems in 61 cars. The most important by severity and frequency: the Takata driver's airbag inflator can degrade and fragment when deployed (Toyota Auris II), smart Brake Support can brake the car unintentionally while driving (Mazda 3 IV and Mazda CX-30) and the pre-collision system radar can fail without warning the driver (Toyota C-HR I).
How it works and why it fails
Driver assistance and automatic emergency braking
Automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning use radars and cameras. A dirty or poorly calibrated sensor, or immature software, can disable them or, conversely, cause braking for no reason, and some manufacturers have corrected this with campaigns.
What to do
Keep the front radar and the windscreen camera area clean. After replacing the windscreen or work on the front end, have the sensors calibrated. If the car brakes on its own for no reason, document it and take it to the official dealer: it is usually fixed with an update.
