Battery warning light on: causes and the faults that trigger it
The red battery-shaped warning light signals a problem with the charging system: the battery is not being recharged, and according to RACE the cause may be the alternator, the belt or the battery itself. In fact, the alternator is the most common reason a battery fails to charge. With the light on, the car can run out of power and stop unexpectedly, so RACE recommends stopping safely, switching off non-essential loads and calling for assistance.[1][2][3][4]
Colour: red. Symbol: outline of a car battery.
One documented fault causes it in the 1.7 CDTI:
- Medium severity: Premature alternator wear
What to do now
As soon as possible
Switch off non-essential electrical consumers (air conditioning, radio), find a safe place to stop and call roadside assistance rather than trying to finish the journey.
What it means
It is the red battery symbol on the dashboard. Even though it shows a battery, it usually warns of a charging system fault (alternator, belt, connections) rather than the battery itself: the battery stops recharging and the car runs on whatever energy it has left.
General explanation from MotorFiable. How it shows up in each engine, with sources, is in the list of faults.
Most common causes
From most to least likely according to the sources. Under each cause, the part and the related OBD codes.
1. Faulty or worn alternator
Common causeRACE names the alternator as the most common reason the battery does not charge: at the end of its life it stops supplying enough power. Among its internal parts, RACE cites the voltage regulator, the diodes and the bearings as the source of the fault, and Autodoc Club adds a defective regulator to the causes of code P0562 (system voltage low).[3][4][5]
2. Loose, worn or broken auxiliary (alternator) belt
Possible causeRACE presents it alongside the alternator as a cause of the warning light, and Autodoc Club explains that if the belt breaks, the electrical systems stop receiving power and the battery drains quickly. RACE warns that a snapped belt can damage engine components, with costs of over 1,000 euros, and Autodoc Club adds that the power steering and the water pump can also fail.[2][4][5][6]
3. Loose or sulphated terminals and faulty connections
Possible causeRACE lists loose terminal bolts and corroded or rusty terminals among the five causes of a battery not charging: they stop current from flowing. Autodoc Club includes loose or corroded terminals among the causes of code P0562.[4][5]
4. Battery at the end of its life
Possible causeRACE counts a worn-out battery among the reasons it does not charge: its cells no longer store energy, something it puts at 3 to 5 years of use. In another article it speaks of an average life of around 5 years depending on use. Autodoc Club lists a weak or defective battery among the causes of code P0562.[4][5][7]
5. Wiring, earths or fuses in the charging circuit
UncommonAutodoc Club includes damaged charging-system wiring, blown fuses and poor earth connections among the causes of code P0562, which is usually accompanied by the battery warning light being on.[5]
Depending on what you notice
The battery light comes on while I am driving
RACE explains that it indicates the battery is not charging, because of an alternator or belt fault, and recommends stopping safely. In the meantime, switch off anything you do not need, such as the air conditioning and the radio, and do not try to reach your destination.[2][3]
Alternator warning light: is it the same as the battery light?
For drivers it is usually the same warning: Diariomotor states that the alternator light can appear as the battery symbol or as the letters ALT or GEN. RACE links it to a charging-system problem, which may lie in the alternator, the battery or the electrical side, and Autodoc Club describes it in the same terms.[1][8][9]
The battery light comes on and goes off
Diariomotor describes this first warning as possibly intermittent, appearing when high-consumption systems are switched on. RACE adds that the light may flicker or appear intermittently while driving, and includes it among the symptoms of a failing alternator.[3][8]
The battery light is on and the car will not start
RACE describes the red light being on together with the starter motor clicking as signs that the battery is not charging. It recommends not persisting with trying to start the car, because that damages the starter motor, and calling breakdown assistance.[4]
I do not know whether it is the battery or the alternator
According to RACE, a battery fault is usually noticed with the car parked, whereas a faulty alternator causes problems while driving, with sudden electrical failures. If the car starts with jump leads but stalls shortly after they are removed, the fault points to the alternator.[3]
What to check first
- Switch off non-essential electrical loads (air conditioning, radio, interior lights), find a safe place to stop and do not try to finish the journey.[2][3]
- If the car no longer starts, do not keep trying over and over: RACE warns that this damages the starter motor. Call breakdown assistance.[4]
- With the engine off, check whether the auxiliary belt is broken, loose or cracked, and whether the battery terminals are loose or rusty. A squeal or whistle from the engine is a clue to a worn belt or worn alternator bearings.[3][4][6][8]
- If you have a voltmeter or multimeter, measure the voltage: according to RACE, with the battery charged and the engine off it should read between 12.4 and 12.7 V, and with the engine running between 13.8 and 14.7 V if the charging system is working; Diariomotor mentions more than 13.5 or 14 V.[8][10]
- Look out for other alternator symptoms: dimmer dashboard lights or headlights, slow electric windows or flickering screens. If they appear, have a garage check the alternator and its belt, as they are the most frequent causes.[3][4][8]
Can I keep driving?
Urgency: As soon as possible
It is not advisable to keep driving. RACE classes the light as red and warns that the car can run out of power and stop unexpectedly; if the battery runs flat, power assistance for the steering and brakes is also lost. Autodoc Club, regarding code P0562, allows only essential driving, and only as far as the nearest garage, because of the risk of complete electrical failure. If the belt has snapped, Autodoc Club considers it unsafe and advises against driving. The sources do not say how many kilometres a car can cover with a faulty alternator.[1][2][3][5][6]
How much it costs to fix

Frequently asked questions
Can I keep driving with the battery warning light on?
RACE recommends against it: you should stop safely, switch off non-essential loads and call for assistance, because the car can run out of power and stop unexpectedly. Autodoc Club, regarding code P0562, allows only a very limited journey to the nearest garage.[1][2][3][5]
Does it mean the battery is bad or the alternator?
It could be either, and also the belt or the connections. RACE speaks of a charging-system problem that may lie in the alternator, the battery or the electrical side, and names the alternator as the most common reason a battery does not charge. Autodoc Club sums it up the same way: it can point to problems in the charging system or the battery.[1][4][9]
What voltage should there be with the engine running?
RACE says that between 13.8 and 14.7 V the charging system is working correctly, and that with the engine off and the battery charged the reading is between 12.4 and 12.7 V. Diariomotor mentions more than 13.5 or 14 V with the engine running; the figures vary somewhat depending on the source and the car.[8][10]
What happens if the alternator belt breaks?
According to Autodoc Club, the electrical systems stop receiving power and the battery drains quickly; in addition, the power steering and the water pump can fail, with a risk of overheating. That is why it advises against driving with a broken belt.[6]
How much does it cost to fix the battery warning light?
It depends on the cause. In Spain, RACE puts the belt at around 20 euros for the part plus labour, a new alternator at between 400 and 600 euros and the battery at around 100 to 130 euros; Diariomotor gives around 300 euros for an exchange alternator and up to double that for a new one.[4][7][8]
