Electric windows or central locking not responding: causes and the faults that trigger it

118 documented faults cause it in 114 cars. The most important:

High severity: Electronic faults with the doors, boot and screen (suspected BSI control unit) · Peugeot 408
Medium severity: Central locking and immobiliser failure due to worn relays · BMW Serie 3 E46
Medium severity: Erratic behaviour of the BSI and electronic modules (control unit, wipers, lighting, car radio) · Citroën C3 I

What it means

The electric windows stop going up or down, or the central locking does not lock or unlock the doors when you use the key, the remote or the interior button. It is usually caused by a fault in the body control module (BCM) or its wiring.

General explanation from MotorFiable. How it shows up in each engine, with sources, is in the list of faults.

What to do now

Garage soon

Test the remote, the button on each door and the manual lock separately. If the fault persists, have the body control module and its connectors checked at a garage.
