Renault 1.5 dCi (K9K)Injectors
Injector and injector seal failures on the 1.5 dCi
Why this rating?
Medium severity: It can leave you stranded or get worse if ignored, without destroying the engine.
Frequency occasional: Caradisiac cites premature failures of injectors or seals on the Mégane III 110, injector noise on the Kangoo II 85/105 and Twingo II 85, jerking on the Duster I 110 and isolated cases on the Kadjar and Duster II. fiches-auto notes improvements from 2015.[1][2][3][7][8][9][10]
Symptoms
- Rough engine running.[1]Vibrations: other faults that cause it · Monitor
- Difficulty starting.[1]Hard to start: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- Jerking between 1,800 and 2,000 rpm (Duster I 110 hp).[9]Jerking: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- Exaggerated injector clatter.[7][8]
Why it happens
Affected cars and years
More cases on the 110 hp. On the Logan 70 and 85 hp, injectors were replaced prematurely up to late 2006, although very few. On the Twingo II 85 hp, injector noise is usually normal.[1][6][7]

How much it costs to repair
Includes: Replacement of one or more injectors and their seals.[4][5]
There are no published prices in Spain specific to the 1.5 dCi. Autopista puts replacing one injector at about €250 and a complete system fault at over €1,000 (prices in Spain). A Nissan Juke 110 owner reports having paid €800, €500 and €400 for three injectors in France.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs

What owners say
Frequently asked questions
Is it normal for the 1.5 dCi injectors to make noise?
Some clatter can be normal: on the Twingo II, Caradisiac attributes it to automatic recalibration. If it comes with rough running or hard starting, they need checking.[1][7]
How much does it cost to replace an injector?
Autopista gives about €250 per injector as a reference (price in Spain); if the whole system fails, the bill exceeds €1,000.[4]

Other 1.5 dCi faults
- Critical severityFrequency: CommonLubricationWear and seizure of the big-end bearingsThe Euro 3 and Euro 4 1.5 dCi engines (approx. 2001-2010), especially the 100 and 105/106 hp, have fragile big-end bearings that can seize and wreck the engine. Renault went as far as paying up to 90% of the repair, with a limit of 7 years and 180,000 km.
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalTimingPremature timing belt failureOn the 85, 105 and 110 hp 1.5 dCi engines built up to late 2010, especially in the Mégane III and Scénic III, the timing belt could break early, sometimes before 50,000 km, and damage the engine. Renault opened a workshop action in 2013.
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalInjectionDelphi high-pressure pump that sheds filings and damages the injectionOn the first 1.5 dCi engines (up to approx. 2010), especially the versions with Delphi injection of 65, 70 and 85 hp, the high-pressure pump can shed iron filings that contaminate the whole circuit and destroy the injectors. The pump, injectors and rail all have to be replaced.Appears at around 60,000 km
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalTurboPremature turbo failure and intake hoses that come looseThe turbo on the 105 and 110 hp 1.5 dCi can fail early: Caradisiac documents it on the Clio III, Scénic III and Qashqai II, sometimes before 80,000 km. More common and cheaper is for a turbo intake hose to come loose or burst and the engine to lose power.
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlBlocked EGR valve on the early 1.5 dCiThe EGR valve often gets dirty and fails on the 65, 80 and 100 hp 1.5 dCi engines from before 2007; on later versions it is much less common. Cleaning it is often enough.
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalClutchPremature dual-mass flywheel failure and clutch problemsThe 105 and 110 hp 1.5 dCi engines can break the dual-mass flywheel early, sometimes before 40,000 km. It warns you with vibrations at idle and metallic noises, and forces you to replace the clutch and flywheel assembly.Repair (garage): €700–€1,300
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalEmissions controlNOx trap and AdBlue system on the Euro 6 1.5 dCiThe 2015 Euro 6b 1.5 dCi engines had a badly calibrated NOx trap that Renault corrected with recall campaigns. On the Blue dCi (from 2018), the AdBlue pump, tank or injector can fail, with an emissions warning and even the car locked out with a full tank.
More faults with the injectors on other engines and cars
- High severityFrequency: Very frequentOM651Delphi piezo injector failure (220/250 CDI)Yes: 220 and 250 CDI models built between 2008 and 2011 had Delphi piezo injectors that were prone to failing and seizing in the cylinder head. Mercedes-Benz replaced them under warranty in 2009 and switched the 220 CDI to solenoid injectors from 2010-2011, but the 250 CDI kept them.Repair (garage): €3,600–€5,900
- High severityFrequency: CommonBMW N52 / N53N53 piezoelectric injector failureThe N53's piezoelectric direct injectors fail frequently and cause misfires, rough idle and limp mode; replacing them is expensive and they must be coded.
- High severityFrequency: CommonMZR-CDOil dilution from leaking injector seals and DPF regenerationsOn the 2.0 and 2.2 MZR-CD, injector seals that age badly and incomplete particulate filter regenerations on short journeys can let unburnt diesel into the sump, diluting the oil and leaving the engine with less lubrication.
- High severityFrequency: CommonOM642Wear and failure of the Bosch piezo injectorsThe OM642's Bosch piezo injectors can fail from around 150,000-200,000 km, especially with poor-quality diesel; they cannot be repaired, only replaced. Because it is a V engine, those on the rear bank are harder to reach, which pushes up labour costs.Repair: €4,500–€6,500
- High severityFrequency: Common2.2 CDI (OM646)Injector seal leak with carbonisation around the seatYes: the copper washer that seals each injector can harden and let combustion gases through, forming a black crust of carbon around it. It is a known fault on Mercedes CDI diesels of this era, with injectors described as fragile on both the OM611 and the OM646.
- High severityFrequency: Common2.2/2.5 dCiInjection pump or injector failureThe 2.2 dCi's common rail injectors fail fairly often on the X-Trail and Almera, with cases of seizing and leaks; on the Almera with the older YD22DDT, the documented fault is in the injection pump electronics, not the injectors.
