ESP warning light on or flashing: causes and the faults that trigger it

The ESP warning light, a yellow car with curved skid marks or the letters ESP in orange, relates to the stability control. If it flashes, the system is working and functioning properly; if it stays on while the car is running, it points to a fault (sensors, ABS, battery) or to the ESP having been switched off with its button. With the light on steadily you can start the car and drive, but without the ESP safety net.[1][2][3]

Colour: yellow or amber. Symbol: the silhouette of a car with curved skid marks (swerving lines) beneath it, or the letters ESP, in amber or orange.

52 documented faults cause it in 52 cars. The most important:

    What it means

The ESP light belongs to the electronic stability control, the system that brakes wheels individually and reduces power when the car starts to skid. It flashes while the system is intervening; if it stays on steadily, it usually indicates a fault (often a sensor) or that ESP has been switched off with its button.

General explanation from MotorFiable. How it shows up in each engine, with sources, is in the list of faults.

    What to do now

    Garage soon

If it flashes in a bend or on a wet road, ease off: ESP is working. If it stays on, switch off and restart, check the ESP OFF button has not been pressed and, if it persists, ask a garage for a fault code read-out.

    62 sourcesHow we work

    Most common causes

From most to least likely according to the sources. Under each cause, the part and the related OBD codes.

    1. 1. Dirty or faulty wheel sensors

      Common cause

The ESP needs to know how fast each wheel is turning. Actualidad Motor lists dirty or blocked wheel sensors among the causes of a steady light, Motorpasión includes faulty sensors (wheel or steering angle) and Autodoc Club points to incorrect ABS sensor readings among the system's faults.[1][3][4][5]

Faults with with the ABS and ESP

    2. 2. Fault in the ABS system

      Common cause

The ESP relies on the ABS: RACE points out that traction control and stability control depend on it, and Motorpasión includes ABS problems among the causes of a steady light and advises checking whether other warning lights are also on, especially the ABS one.[1][6]

Faults with with the ABS and ESP

    3. 3. Steering angle sensor

      Possible cause

This sensor tells the system where the driver wants to go. Motorpasión and Actualidad Motor include it among the possible causes; the latter puts its cost at around 200 euros.[1][3][5]

Faults with with the ABS and ESP

    4. 4. Weak battery, alternator, fuses or connections

      Possible cause

Actualidad Motor lists a weak battery, alternator problems, blown fuses and loose connections. Autodoc Club adds broken wiring and the system losing its configuration after the battery terminal has been disconnected.[3][4]

Faults with with the 12 V batteryFaults with with the alternator and starter motorFaults with with the electrical wiring

    5. 5. ESP switched off with the ESP OFF button

      Possible cause

This is not a fault. According to RACE, if the stability control is switched off the light stays on permanently, in the same orange colour, to warn that you are driving without the system. Autodoc Club places the button on the centre console.[2][4]

    6. 6. Brake pedal sensor

      Possible cause

Actualidad Motor mentions brake pedal sensor failures, sometimes caused by a loose connection, and estimates the cost of replacing the sensor at around 30 euros.[3]

Faults with with the ABS and ESP

    7. 7. Faulty control unit or gyroscope

      Uncommon

Actualidad Motor points to gyroscope or control unit components when the fault is more serious, at a cost of 500 euros upwards. Autodoc Club includes overheating of the control unit among the system's faults.[3][4]

Faults with with the control unitsFaults with with the ABS and ESP

    8. 8. Broken Haldex coupling (on cars that have one)

      Uncommon

Autodoc Club includes a broken Haldex coupling among the causes of stability control failure, which only affects cars fitted with that part.[4]

Faults with with the driveshafts and transmission

    Depending on what you notice

The ESP light flashes while I am driving

It is a sign that the ESP is intervening and working properly, something typical on wet surfaces or in a tight bend according to Motorpasión; RACE places it in emergency braking or in rain, and Autodoc Club says it happens whenever the system activates. According to Wikipedia, the ESP only intervenes when it detects a likely loss of control, so you should ease off.[1][2][4][7]

The ESP light stays on and does not go out

A light that does not go out indicates a fault, which according to Motorpasión may lie in the ESP itself, in the ABS or in the wheel or steering angle sensors. Actualidad Motor says that if it comes on as soon as you switch the ignition on, it is usually a check-control error or a loose connection, and suggests moving the car a few metres and restarting.[1][3]

ESP OFF: the light stays on after pressing the button

If you switch the ESP off with its button, the light stays on to warn you that you are driving without the system (RACE). Actualidad Motor advises against switching it off except in very specific cases, such as pulling away uphill on a slippery surface, and Wikipedia states that the system reactivates when the ignition is restarted.[2][3][7]

How to turn off the ESP light

It depends on why it is on. If it is because of the ESP OFF button, you switch it off with that button on the centre console and the system reactivates when the ignition is restarted. If it is a fault, the sources suggest moving the car a few metres and restarting the engine; if it stays on, check the battery, fuses and sensors and have the fault codes read at a garage. None of them describes a way of turning it off without repairing the cause.[1][3][4][7]

Skidding car warning light or yellow triangle

Motorpasión describes the ESP light as a yellow car swerving, and RACE as the letters ESP in orange. None of the sources consulted describes it as a triangle, so we cannot say that a yellow triangle is the ESP: check your car's handbook if the symbol does not match.[1][2]

ESP light on a BMW, a Seat León or other makes

According to Wikipedia, ESP is the name used by, among others, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche, and BMW calls its equivalent system DSC (Dynamic Stability Control). The sources do not cover specific models, but the behaviour described applies to the warning light in general: it flashes when the system acts and, when steady, indicates a fault or a system that has been switched off.[1][2][7]

    What to check first

    1. Note whether the light flashes or stays on and in what circumstances it comes on: flashing on a wet road or in a bend means the ESP is working; if steady, a fault has to be ruled out.[1][2]
    2. Check that the ESP OFF button has not been pressed (it is usually on the centre console): with the system switched off the light stays on.[2][4]
    3. If it stays on, move the car a few metres, switch off and restart the engine to see whether the warning disappears.[1][3]
    4. See whether other warning lights are on, especially the ABS one, and check tyre pressure and wear.[1]
    5. Check the condition of the battery and alternator, and the system's fuses and connections.[3][4]
    6. If the light persists, have the fault codes read at a garage: faults in the wheel, steering or brake pedal sensors, the ABS or the control unit are located through diagnostics.[1][3][4]

    Can I keep driving?

    Urgency: Garage soon

It depends on the light. If it flashes there is no fault, you just need to slow down. If it stays on, Motorpasión says you can keep driving, and Actualidad Motor says the fault does not prevent starting or driving, but that the ESP will not act if the car loses stability: active safety is greatly reduced. Drive carefully, especially in rain or on slippery surfaces, and have it diagnosed soon.[1][3]

How much it costs to fix

Indicative prices published by the sources cited; they depend on the car and the garage.

    RepairPrice
Replacing the brake pedal sensor (approximate figure from Actualidad Motor; it does not say whether labour is included)[3]€30
Replacing the steering angle sensor (approximate figure from Actualidad Motor; it does not say whether labour is included)[3]€200
Repairing the gyroscope or control unit (from 500 euros according to Actualidad Motor, with no upper limit and depending on the components affected)[3]€500

    Frequently asked questions

What does the ESP warning light mean?

It is the warning for the electronic stability control. According to Bosch, this system compares the car's actual movement with the direction the driver wants 25 times per second and, if there is a deviation, reduces engine power and brakes individual wheels. The light flashes when the system intervenes and stays on if there is a fault or if it has been switched off.[1][2][5]

Can I drive with the ESP light on?

Yes, according to Motorpasión and Actualidad Motor: the car starts and drives, but the ESP will not help you if you lose control. You should reduce your speed, especially in rain, and have the fault checked soon.[1][3]

When is it a good idea to press the ESP OFF button?

Actualidad Motor advises against it except in very specific situations, such as pulling away uphill on a slippery surface. With the system switched off the light stays on steadily, according to RACE.[2][3]

What is the difference between the ESP light and the ABS light?

They are different but closely linked systems: Autodoc Club explains that the stability control works together with the ABS, and RACE points out that traction control and stability control depend on the ABS. That is why Motorpasión advises checking whether the ABS light is also on.[1][4][6]

    Is ESP mandatory on cars?

On new cars, yes: Motor.es points out that since 1 November 2014 all new vehicles sold in the European Union must have it as standard, and Wikipedia agrees. According to Bosch and Motor.es, ESP could prevent up to 80% of skidding accidents.[5][7][8]
