Spanner warning light on: causes and the faults that trigger it

In the guides consulted, the spanner is above all the scheduled service reminder: a service is due by mileage or time and it does not mean a fault, as Pillatop describes it on the Opel Corsa (sold in the UK as the Vauxhall Corsa), the Citroën C3 and C4 and the Peugeot 3008, and in BMW's CBS system. It is not universal: the same site says that on the Renault Clio the spanner or the SERV message indicates a fault stored by the control unit. If it appears on its own and the car drives well, note the service; if it comes with loss of power, hesitation or other warning lights, get a diagnosis.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Colour: yellow or amber. Symbol: a spanner, sometimes with the message SERV or a service warning on the display.

      What it means

The spanner on the instrument cluster is usually the scheduled maintenance reminder: it warns that a service is due and, in general, does not indicate a fault. This is not the case on every brand: on some, such as the Renault Clio according to one guide, the spanner or the SERV message signals a fault that the ECU has stored.

General explanation from MotorFiable. How it shows up in each engine, with sources, is in the list of faults.

      What to do now

      Monitor

See whether it appears alone or together with other warning lights, loss of power or jerking. If it is alone, book the service; if not, or if your car is from a brand where it can warn of a fault, ask for a fault code read-out.

      10 sourcesHow we work

      Most common causes

From most to least likely according to the sources. Under each cause, the part and the related OBD codes.

      1. 1. Scheduled service due (mileage or time)

        Common cause

This is the explanation the guides give for the Opel Corsa, the Peugeot 3008 and the Citroën C3 and C4: the on-board computer reminds you that maintenance is due, normally tied to the oil change, the filters and the kilometres covered, and it is not a mechanical fault.[1][2][3][6]

      2. 2. Maintenance according to BMW's CBS system

        Possible cause

On BMW the spanner is part of the CBS (Condition Based Service) system, which warns that maintenance is due according to mileage or elapsed time; Pillatop stresses that it does not mean something has broken.[5]

      3. 3. Fault stored by the control unit (spanner or SERV on a Renault)

        Possible cause

Pillatop maintains that on the Renault Clio the spanner or the word SERV does not mean "service due", but that the control unit has detected and stored a fault, for example in the injection system, and recommends running a diagnosis to read the exact code.[4]

      4. 4. Engine fault if accompanied by loss of power or the engine light

        Possible cause

Pillatop warns that if the spanner appears together with loss of power, hesitation or the engine light, it is no longer just the reminder and the car needs diagnosing.[1]

      Depending on what you notice

Spanner warning light on an Opel Corsa

Pillatop describes the Corsa's spanner as a pending scheduled service and not a mechanical fault. On its own, it is a reminder; if it comes with loss of power, hesitation or the engine light, a diagnosis is needed.[1]

How to remove the spanner warning light on the Opel Corsa

According to Pillatop, at a garage it is resolved in about two minutes with the diagnostic machine, and it gives no steps for doing it yourself. We have not found any reliable source, not even the owner's manual, with the procedure for the Corsa, so the reference is your model's manual.[1]

Spanner warning light on a Peugeot 3008

Pillatop says that on the 3008 it indicates that the scheduled service is due, normally tied to the oil change and the kilometres covered. The guide does not explain how to reset the warning.[2]

Spanner or SERV message on a Citroën

Pillatop treats it on the C3 and C4 as the on-board computer's maintenance reminder, not as a fault, and points out that it can appear as a spanner icon or as a message on the display.[3][6]

Spanner or SERV on a Renault

On the Clio, a Pillatop guide says it does not mean a service is due, but that the control unit has stored a fault. If it happens on a Renault, the sensible thing is to read the codes before accepting the maintenance explanation.[4]

Warning light with a key: spanner or immobiliser?

The spanner is the service warning, but an ordinary key, a padlock or the message "key not detected" correspond, according to RACE, to the immobiliser, which prevents starting when the car does not recognise the key. If the car will not start, see the immobiliser guide.[1][7]

      What to check first

      1. See whether the spanner is on its own or accompanied by other warning lights, loss of power or jerking. That difference decides whether it is only the reminder or whether the car needs diagnosing.[1]
      2. Consult the car's manual: RACE reminds readers that no law requires all manufacturers to use the same symbols, and the meaning of the spanner varies between makes.[8]
      3. Check when you had your last service and what interval the manufacturer specifies; RACE cites services every 10,000, 15,000 or 30,000 kilometres and asks you to follow the manufacturer's guidance.[9]
      4. If a service is due, book an appointment at the garage: according to Pillatop, switching off the warning takes about two minutes with the diagnostic machine.[1]
      5. If your car is a Renault with the spanner or the SERV message, or symptoms appear, get a fault code reading before assuming it is only maintenance.[1][4]

      Can I keep driving?

      Urgency: Monitor

If the spanner appears on its own and the car drives normally, the guides describe it as a reminder and not a fault, so it does not require you to stop. Even so, RACE recommends checking yellow warning lights as soon as possible. A diagnosis is needed if it comes with loss of power, hesitation or the engine light, and also on a Renault, where one guide treats it as a fault stored by the control unit.[1][4][10]

How much it costs to fix

      Frequently asked questions

Does the spanner on the dashboard mean there is a fault?

Normally not. Pillatop describes it as a maintenance reminder on the Opel Corsa, the Citroën C3 and C4 and the Peugeot 3008, and as part of the CBS system on BMW. The exception it records is the Renault Clio, where the spanner or SERV indicates a fault stored by the control unit, and on any make, if it comes with symptoms, it needs diagnosing.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Can I turn off the spanner warning light myself?

The sources consulted give no steps for doing it yourself. Pillatop only says that at a garage it is resolved in about two minutes with the machine. The reference is your model's manual, because RACE reminds readers that manufacturers do not use the same symbols.[1][8]

How often does the spanner light come on?

It depends on the manufacturer and the car's maintenance plan. RACE speaks of services every 10,000, 15,000 or 30,000 kilometres and of following the manufacturer's guidance; BMW uses the CBS system, which warns by mileage or time according to Pillatop.[5][9]

What is the difference between the spanner and the engine light?

The spanner is usually the service reminder. The engine light, on the other hand, alerts to a fault or a failure in engine management, according to RACE, and should be checked as soon as possible.[1][8][10]
