Yellow triangle warning light with exclamation mark: causes and the faults that trigger it

The yellow triangle with an exclamation mark is a general warning: it does not point to a specific fault, but to an issue ranging from something minor to the failure of an electronic system, and the exact reason is given by the message on the cluster display (Volkswagen calls it the central warning light). Like other yellow warning lights, it calls for attention but does not require you to stop: you can carry on with caution and have the car checked as soon as possible, whereas a red warning light means you must stop. If loss of power, noises or fault messages also appear, it is best to stop.[1][2][3][4]

Colour: yellow or amber. Symbol: a triangle with an exclamation mark inside it.

      What it means

The yellow triangle with an exclamation mark is a general warning light: the ECU is telling you it has detected an issue, from something minor to the failure of an electronic system. It does not say which one, so you need to read the message shown on the instrument cluster display.

General explanation from MotorFiable. How it shows up in each engine, with sources, is in the list of faults.

      What to do now

      Garage soon

Read the associated message on the cluster display and look out for other symptoms. If the car drives normally, you can carry on with caution and have it checked as soon as possible; if it loses power, makes noises or a fault message appears, stop.

      10 sourcesHow we work

      Most common causes

From most to least likely according to the sources. Under each cause, the part and the related OBD codes.

      1. 1. General warning from a system, clarified by the display message

        Common cause

RACE describes the yellow triangle with an exclamation mark as a general warning that can range from a minor fault to the need to check an electronic system, and says that to find the exact reason you need to read the message that accompanies it on the display.[1]

      2. 2. Fault or insufficient fluid level (Volkswagen)

        Possible cause

Volkswagen explains that if the central warning light flashes or lights up partially, with warning sounds and other symbols, it is signalling faults or insufficient fluid levels.[4]

      3. 3. Stability system (ESP/ESC) or preventive maintenance (Peugeot 3008)

        Possible cause

Pillatop says that on the Peugeot 3008 the yellow triangle with an exclamation mark is a general warning usually related to the stability system or preventive maintenance notices, and not to an immediate emergency.[5]

Faults with with the ABS and ESP

      4. 4. Check Control system message (BMW)

        Possible cause

Pillatop explains for the BMW 1 Series that Check Control shows text messages on the display with the problem detected. Red messages require you to stop the car immediately, while amber or yellow ones allow you to continue with caution until it is checked.[6]

      5. 5. Malfunction detected by the system (master warning light)

        Possible cause

In its Toyota guide, Autofácil lists a master warning light that comes on or flashes when the system detects a malfunction and requires a visit to the garage.[7]

      Depending on what you notice

Yellow triangle with exclamation mark on a Volkswagen

Volkswagen México's guide to indicators calls it the central warning light: if it flashes or lights up partially, with warning sounds and additional symbols, it signals faults or insufficient fluid levels. Look at the display message to find out which.[4]

      Yellow triangle on a BMW

Pillatop explains for the 1 Series that Check Control writes on the display which component is failing: in amber or yellow it allows you to continue with caution until the car is checked, and in red it requires you to stop. The guide does not describe the triangle symbol itself.[6]

Yellow triangle with exclamation mark on an Audi A4

None of the sources consulted describes this symbol on the A4. RACE's general guidance is to read the associated message on the display and have the car checked as soon as possible, and it points out that no law requires manufacturers to use the same symbols, so the A4 manual is the reference.[1][8]

Yellow or orange light on in the car

A yellow or orange warning light indicates something that needs attention without having to stop immediately. RACE describes the engine light, when orange, as a moderate fault or a warning, and Autofácil points out that yellow lights call for attention, whereas with a red one you should stop as soon as possible.[3][9]

Exclamation mark warning light inside a circle or a tyre

It is not always the triangle. RACE describes the handbrake light as a red circle with an exclamation mark, which may mean you have it on, and the yellow tyre pressure light as a tyre with an exclamation mark, which warns of a pressure below the recommended level.[1][8]

The yellow light comes on when you switch on the ignition

Autofácil points out that some yellow warning lights come on as normal at start-up and should go out afterwards. If one stays on or reappears while driving, it needs checking.[3]

      What to check first

      1. Read the message that accompanies the triangle on the instrument cluster display: it is what tells you the exact reason for the warning.[1][6]
      2. Note the colour and how it behaves: whether it is red, whether it flashes or whether a warning sound is heard. Red means you must stop; Volkswagen adds that flashing with sounds and other symbols points to faults or insufficient levels.[2][3][4]
      3. Look for other symptoms, such as loss of power, strange noises or fault messages. If any of these are present, RACE recommends stopping and calling for technical assistance.[1]
      4. Consult your car's manual: no law requires manufacturers to use the same symbols, and the meaning of a general warning can vary between models.[4][8]
      5. Even if the car drives well, have it checked at a garage as soon as possible to identify the reason for the warning.[1]

      Can I keep driving?

      Urgency: Garage soon

It depends on the reason that triggered the warning. RACE says that in many cases you can carry on driving with caution, but the car should be checked as soon as possible, and that if loss of power, strange noises or fault messages appear, the advisable course is to stop and call for assistance. If the message or the warning light is red, you must stop: RACE and Pillatop both say so (in BMW's Check Control, red messages require you to stop the car immediately).[1][2][6]

      Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a yellow and a red warning light in the car?

According to Autofácil, with a red warning light the problem is serious and you should stop as soon as possible, whereas yellow points to something that needs attention without meaning you have to stop immediately. RACE agrees: with a red warning light it is best to stop the vehicle as soon as possible and check the cause.[2][3]

Can you drive with the yellow triangle on?

It depends on the reason. RACE says that in many cases you can continue with caution, but the car should be checked as soon as possible; if other symptoms appear, such as loss of power, strange noises or fault messages, it recommends stopping and requesting technical assistance.[1]

Is an orange light the same as a yellow one?

In practice the guides use both colours for the same level of warning. RACE describes the engine light as yellow or orange and, when it is orange, links it to a moderate fault or a warning that lets you reach a garage with caution, whereas red signals a serious problem.[9]

Will a car with a yellow warning light on pass the MOT?

It depends on the light. A DEKRA ITV engineer, quoted by Autofácil, explains that with the ABS, airbag or engine fault light on you will be failed, and that the brake and oil pressure lights do not amount to a serious defect but do count as a minor defect. His recommendation is not to go to the ITV (the Spanish roadworthiness inspection, equivalent to the MOT) with any warning light on. We have not found how the ITV treats the general warning triangle.[10]

Why do lights come on in the cluster when you switch on the ignition?

Autofácil explains that some warning lights come on as normal at start-up and should go out afterwards. If one does not go out or reappears while the car is running, it indicates a problem.[3]
