ABS or ESP warning light on: causes and the faults that trigger it
The ABS warning light, the letters ABS in amber or orange, warns of a fault in the anti-lock braking system. It does not mean you have lost your brakes: normal braking still works, but under hard braking the wheels can lock, and traction control and stability control (ESP), which depend on the ABS, may also be affected. The usual causes are a wheel speed sensor, its wiring, the brake fluid level, a fuse or the control unit, and it is best to have it diagnosed soon.[1][2][3][4]
Colour: yellow or amber. Symbol: the letters ABS, usually inside a circle, in amber or orange.
One documented fault causes it in the 1.8 Hybrid:
- Critical severity: Brake actuator failure (hard pedal, loss of assistance)
What it means
It indicates a fault in the anti-lock braking or stability control system: often a dirty or damaged wheel speed sensor, its wiring or the hydraulic unit. The brakes still work, but without those aids.
General explanation from MotorFiable. How it shows up in each engine, with sources, is in the list of faults.
What to do now
Garage soon
Drive carefully, especially in the rain, and ask for a fault code read-out. It is often fixed with a wheel sensor.
Most common causes
From most to least likely according to the sources. Under each cause, the part and the related OBD codes.
1. Dirty or damaged wheel speed sensor
Common causeRACE lists a damaged speed sensor among the causes of the warning light, and Motorpasión mentions dirt on the sensors. Motorpedia adds that the sensor can give an intermittent signal if the tone ring (the toothed ring it reads) is damaged or has metal debris stuck to it, and Autodoc Club also lists it among the common faults.[1][2][4][5]
2. Damaged wiring or connectors
Common causeAccording to RACE, a broken, corroded, damp or badly connected wire can cause the fault. Motorpedia specifies that sensor cables break or chafe in the areas that move (suspension and steering) and that connectors can corrode; Motorpasión also cites damaged wiring and Autodoc Club cites electrical connection problems.[1][2][4][5]
Faults with with the electrical wiringFaults with with the ABS and ESP
3. Low or degraded brake fluid
Possible causeRACE explains that, with the brake fluid below the recommended level, the system can trigger the warning, and Autodoc Club includes low or degraded fluid among the causes.[1][5]
4. Blown fuse
Possible causeRACE points out that a blown fuse can interrupt the ABS and turn the warning light on.[1]
5. Air in the circuit, pump or failed recalibration
Possible causeMotorpasión, discussing a warning light that does not go out after hard braking, also cites an air bubble in the brake fluid circuit, a pump failure or an incorrect recalibration of the system, and makes clear that it is for the workshop to determine which it is.[2]
Faults with with the brake systemFaults with with the ABS and ESP
6. ABS control unit or hydraulic module
UncommonRACE includes internal faults of the ABS electronic unit and the valve block among the causes, and Motorpedia considers them less common than sensor and wiring problems. It is also the most expensive repair.[1][3][4]
Faults with with the ABS and ESPFaults with with the control units
Depending on what you notice
The ABS light came on after hard braking
Motorpasión clarifies that this does not mean you have lost your brakes, but it does mean the anti-lock system will not help you in the next emergency stop. Among the causes it cites dirt on sensors, damaged wiring, air in the circuit, the pump or a failed recalibration, and it advises taking the car to a workshop if the light does not go out.[2]
ABS light on: can I keep driving?
RACE says you can drive temporarily if the car brakes normally, but that it is not advisable to put it off, and advises reducing speed and avoiding harsh braking. The reason is that without ABS the wheels can lock under hard braking; Motorpasión insists on not leaving it for later.[1][2][3]
ABS fault and the car won't start
RACE warns that in more modern cars an ABS fault can even prevent the car from starting, whereas in its article on the warning light it says the car can normally keep being driven. This is a claim we have only seen in that source: if your car will not start, the workshop's code reading will tell you whether the ABS is the cause.[1][3]
ABS and ESP warning lights on at the same time
It is not unusual: RACE points out that traction control and stability control depend on the ABS, and Motorpedia explains that the failure of an ABS sensor affects traction control, ESP, electric power steering and, in some cars, variable suspension.[3][4]
ABS light amber or red
RACE describes the ABS light as amber or red and in both cases links it to a fault in the anti-lock system. The sources consulted do not explain what the difference is between one colour and the other.[6]
What to check first
- Check that the car brakes normally; reduce your speed and avoid harsh braking for as long as the light stays on.[1]
- Switch the engine off and start it again to see whether the warning disappears.[1]
- Look at the brake fluid level: below the recommended minimum it can turn the light on.[1][5]
- Check whether the ESP or traction control warning lights are also on, as they depend on the ABS.[3][4]
- Ask a workshop for an electronic diagnosis: a scanner reads the fault codes and the speed of each wheel in real time, which locates the sensor, cable or module that is failing.[1][4]
- If your MOT is coming up, repair the fault first: with the light on it is grounds for failure.[7]
Can I keep driving?
Urgency: Garage soon
You can normally keep driving with care. RACE says the car can be driven temporarily if it brakes normally, because the conventional braking system still works, but it does not recommend prolonging it and advises stopping in a safe place if the car behaves strangely. Without ABS, hard braking can lock the wheels, and Motorpasión insists on not putting the check off.[1][2][3]
How much it costs to fix
Indicative prices published by the sources cited; they depend on the car and the garage.
| Repair | Price |
|---|---|
| Replacing an ABS sensor (RACE range; it does not say whether labour is included)[1] | €50 – €150 |
| Repairing the ABS control unit (RACE says it can exceed 500 euros, with no upper limit given)[1] | €500 |
| Replacing the ABS module or valve block (approximate RACE figures, from about 700 to about 2,000 euros; it does not say what is included)[3] | €700 – €2,000 |

Frequently asked questions
Can I pass the MOT with the ABS light on?
No. A DEKRA ITV engineer consulted by Autofácil explains that the car fails if the light does not go out with the engine running or if the system detects a fault. (ITV is the Spanish equivalent of the MOT.)[7]
Do the brakes still work with the ABS light on?
Yes, conventional braking still works: Motor.es explains that the ABS works alongside the normal brakes, and RACE says you can normally keep driving. What you lose is the anti-lock assistance, so under hard braking the wheels can lock and you can lose steering control.[1][8]
How is the ABS light related to the ESP light?
Very closely. RACE points out that traction control and stability control depend on the ABS, and Motorpedia explains that the failure of an ABS sensor also affects those systems. That is why an ABS fault can appear together with other warning lights.[3][4]
How does a workshop diagnose an ABS fault?
It connects a scanner to the ABS system to read the fault codes, see the speed of each wheel in real time and activate the solenoid valves and the module's pump to check they work, according to Motorpedia. RACE specifically recommends an electronic diagnosis.[1][4]
