Particulate filter warning light (DPF): causes and the faults that trigger it

The particulate filter warning light, normally amber, indicates that the DPF is heavily loaded with soot and the car has not managed to clean it by itself, which is typical of people who almost always make short city journeys. The sources recommend carrying on driving on a main road, without stopping the car halfway through the regeneration, at around 2,300-2,500 rpm in a lower gear than normal. If the light stays on or flashes, you need a garage to force the regeneration or clean the filter, because HELLA warns that otherwise there can be serious engine damage.[1][2][3]

Colour: yellow or amber. Symbol: particulate filter symbol on the dashboard, normally amber; its design varies by manufacturer.

35 documented faults cause it in 34 engines. The most important:

What it means

On modern diesels it means the particulate filter is clogged with soot and has not been able to regenerate. It is common in cars used mostly for short town journeys, although it can also be caused by a sensor or by an injection or EGR fault.

General explanation from MotorFiable. How it shows up in each engine, with sources, is in the list of faults.

What to do now

Garage soon

If the handbook allows it, a 20-minute drive on a motorway at a steady speed can complete the regeneration. If the light stays on or you lose power, go to a garage.

Most common causes

From most to least likely according to the sources. Under each cause, the part and the related OBD codes.

  1. 1. Short journeys and almost purely urban use

    Common cause

According to Autopista, urban driving, short journeys and frequent starts stop the exhaust reaching the temperature needed to regenerate the filter. RACE explains that to clean itself the filter needs the engine to work at higher revs, and HELLA places regeneration in motorway or dual-carriageway driving. Code P2463 corresponds to a filter restricted by soot accumulation.[1][3][4][5]

Faults with with the particulate filterP2463

  2. 2. Interrupted regenerations (switching the car off midway)

    Common cause

RACE insists on not stopping the car during regeneration, because otherwise the filter is not fully cleaned. Autopista cites repeated interruption of the process as one of the main causes of blockage, and HELLA warns that cutting the cleaning short can cause very serious engine damage.[1][3][4]

Faults with with the particulate filter

  3. 3. Accumulated ash or a filter near the end of its life

    Possible cause

Soot burns off, but the ash that combustion leaves behind stays in the filter: HELLA says that when it fills up, the filter has to be cleaned or replaced. Diariomotor estimates the average life of a DPF at around 150,000 km, and Autopista says replacement may be needed from that figure. Code P242F corresponds to a filter restricted by ash accumulation.[3][4][6][7]

Faults with with the particulate filterP242F

  4. 4. DPF additive used up (cars with an additive system)

    Possible cause

HELLA explains that the additive system is used mainly on Peugeot and Citroën, and on some Ford, Mazda, Volvo and BMW models: the additive, which comes from a separate tank, lowers the temperature at which soot burns. Diariomotor says the computer warns when it runs out, although it does not specify whether it uses this same warning light.[3][8]

Faults with with the particulate filter

  5. 5. Faulty differential pressure sensor or other sensors

    Possible cause

The filter has sensors that report how full it is, and the ECU triggers regeneration from that signal, according to HELLA. RACE includes a faulty differential pressure sensor among the ten causes of an anti-pollution system fault.[3][9]

Faults with with the engine sensors

  6. 6. Faults that prevent regeneration: EGR, injectors or leaks

    Possible cause

RACE lists, alongside the saturated filter and failed regeneration, an EGR valve blocked by carbon, injector faults or irregular combustion and intake or exhaust leaks among the causes of an anti-pollution system fault. If the filter saturates again soon after being cleaned, it is worth having the garage rule out these parts.[9]

Depending on what you notice

The particulate filter warning light has come on (DPF light)

RACE describes it as a normally amber warning light whose symbol may vary by manufacturer. According to Autopista, it usually appears when saturation is around 75% and the car can no longer complete an automatic clean by itself; sometimes it also goes into limp mode with less power.[1][2]

My particulate filter is saturated: what do I do?

RACE advises getting onto a main road and driving for a while at 2,300-2,500 rpm in a lower gear than usual, without stopping the car, because regeneration takes about 2 or 3 minutes. Autopista adds that if you notice signs of regeneration (higher instantaneous consumption, a fan that keeps running after switching off, a slightly higher idle, a different exhaust sound or Start/Stop disabled), it is best to carry on for about 15 or 20 minutes on a main road.[1][2]

The DPF light does not go out or flashes

HELLA warns that if the light stays on or flashes, regeneration cannot be completed and you must go straight to a specialist garage to avoid serious engine damage. Autopista points out that the garage resorts to forced regenerations if the symptoms persist, and that replacing the filter is the last alternative when neither regeneration nor cleaning works.[3][4]

DPF additive: what it is and when it is topped up

It is the fluid that systems such as those on Peugeot and Citroën add to the fuel so that soot burns at a lower temperature. Diariomotor places it in a tank of around 3 litres next to the fuel tank, lasting between 80,000 and over 200,000 km depending on use, and estimates that topping it up including labour can exceed €100.[3][8]

Clean the particulate filter or replace it?

Autopista suggests going in order: avoid short journeys, regenerate on the road or at the garage, clean the filter and leave replacement as the last alternative; the cleaning methods it reviews cost between €15 and €150, and RACE talks of around €400 to recondition the filter. A new filter costs from around €800 (RACE) to over €2,000 (Diariomotor), plus labour, and emptying or removing it is illegal and detectable at the ITV (Spain's roadworthiness inspection).[1][4][6][10]

What to check first

  1. Note whether the light is steady or flashing and whether the car loses power or goes into limp mode: a flashing light or one that does not go out is a reason to go to the garage immediately.[2][3]
  2. If you notice signs of regeneration (a fan that keeps running after switching off, higher idle, a different exhaust sound, Start/Stop disabled), do not switch the car off: carry on for about 15 or 20 minutes on a main road.[1][2]
  3. Get onto a main road and drive for a while at 2,300-2,500 rpm in a lower gear than usual. Do not try to open or clean the filter yourself.[1]
  4. If the light stays on, ask a garage for a forced regeneration with a diagnostic scanner and have them read the fault codes to rule out sensors, EGR or injectors.[1][4][9]
  5. If your car has an additive system (mainly Peugeot and Citroën), ask the garage about the level in the additive tank and when it was last topped up.[3][8]
  6. To stop it recurring, alternate urban journeys with long runs on main roads at a steady pace.[2][4]

Can I keep driving?

Urgency: Garage soon

It depends on how the car behaves. With the light steady and the car running normally, the sources recommend carrying on driving on a main road so the regeneration finishes, without stopping midway. If the light stays on or flashes, or there is loss of power, the sensible course is to go to the garage now: HELLA warns that otherwise serious engine damage can occur, and Autopista adds that carrying on with a blocked filter can damage other components such as the turbo and lead to a failed ITV (Spain's roadworthiness inspection) for excess emissions.[1][2][3][4][10]

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep driving with the particulate filter warning light on?

If it is steady and the car is running normally, the sources advise carrying on driving on a main road so the regeneration finishes, without switching the car off midway. If it stays on or flashes, HELLA says regeneration cannot take place and that you must go straight to a garage to avoid serious engine damage.[1][2][3]

How long does a regeneration last and how often is it done?

RACE talks of about 2 or 3 minutes, roughly every 1,000 km. HELLA gives an interval of 400 to 800 km in motorway or dual-carriageway driving, and Autopista says that with very urban use intervention may be needed as often as every 300 or 400 km.[1][3][10]

What is DPF additive and how often does it need topping up?

It is an additive that some systems, mainly those on Peugeot and Citroën, add to the fuel from their own tank so that soot burns at a lower temperature. Diariomotor places it in a tank of around 3 litres and estimates a life of between 80,000 and over 200,000 km, and says the computer warns when it runs out.[3][8]

Can you pass the ITV with a blocked particulate filter?

Autopista includes among the consequences of driving with a blocked filter failing the ITV (Spain's roadworthiness inspection) for excess emissions, and RACE points out that an anti-pollution system fault can count against you in the inspection because it includes emissions checks and an OBD read-out. Diariomotor adds that emptying or removing the filter is illegal and can be detected at the ITV.[4][6][9]

Do cleaning additives poured into the tank work?

They can help if the blockage is mild: Autopista includes them among the cleaning methods (around €15 to €30) because they raise the temperature of the exhaust gases and help burn off the residue, and Diariomotor makes clear they are not miracle workers with serious blockages.[6][10]

How often does the particulate filter need replacing?

There is no fixed date. Diariomotor estimates an average life of around 150,000 km, Autopista says replacement may be needed from that figure and that with good maintenance a filter can exceed 200,000 km.[2][4][6]
