Takata airbags

Takata airbag inflators used ammonium nitrate without a desiccant, a compound that degrades with heat and humidity. Over the years, the inflator can explode with too much force and throw metal fragments into the cabin. It affects tens of millions of cars from many brands, with successive campaigns for more than a decade.

What to do

Use the VIN, on the brand's website or at the official dealer, to check whether your car is affected. The replacement is free. On some models the manufacturer has asked owners not to use the car (stop drive) until the airbag is replaced: follow that instruction.
