Renault-Nissan-Mercedes-Benz 1.3 TCe / 1.3 DIG-T (H5Ht / HR13DDT / M282)Emissions control
Emissions warning light on because of a calibration fault on the 1.3 TCe
Why this rating?
Medium severity: It can leave you stranded or get worse if ignored, without destroying the engine.
Frequency occasional: L'argus documents several episodes of this calibration fault between 2019 and 2020, each corrected at the factory on a different date; the specialist blog auto-platinium also places control unit reprogramming among the most common interventions on the engine. No source gives figures for affected vehicles.[1][2]
Symptoms
- A "emissions system needs checking" message on the dashboard.[1]Pollution control faulty: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- Injection or engine fault warning light on.[1]Engine warning light: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- In some cases, irregular engine running (L'argus describes it as "dysfonctionnement moteur").[1]Limp mode: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
Why it happens
A fault in the factory injection calibration, which makes the control unit misinterpret how the engine is running and turn on the warning lights.[1]
The specialist blog auto-platinium attributes similar episodes to software faults that cause hesitation on cold starts.[2]
If it is not repaired: No mechanical damage is described: the fault is resolved by reprogramming the control unit at the official service centre.[1]
Affected cars and years
L'argus documents factory corrections in June and July 2019 and other calibration episodes up to 2020.[1]

How much it costs to repair
Includes: Control unit reprogramming.[2]
A French source (auto-platinium) puts the reprogramming at about €100 or covered by the manufacturer; there is no second source to confirm the price in Spain, so it is worth asking for a quote at the official service centre.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs

How to prevent it
- If the warning light comes on, do not ignore it: take it to the official service centre so they can check whether it needs the reprogramming.[1]

Injection calibration correction (control unit reprogramming)
Factory correction of the injection calibration that turned on the emissions warning light or the engine fault light; on cars already built, the official service centre reprograms the control unit.[1]

Frequently asked questions
Is it serious if the emissions warning light comes on in a 1.3 TCe?
According to L'argus, in these cases the origin is a control unit calibration fault, not mechanical damage, and it is resolved by reprogramming the engine software.[1]
How much does the reprogramming cost?
A French source puts it at around €100 or covered by the manufacturer, but there is no price data for Spanish garages.[2]

Other 1.3 TCe faults
- High severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalTurboTurbo actuator (wastegate) faultOn 1.3 TCe/DIG-T engines built up to 19 June 2020, the clip that holds the turbo wastegate valve rod may be missing or come loose, causing a loss of power with the injection warning light on. If the rod is left with too much play, the whole turbo has to be replaced.Repair (garage): €400–€700
- High severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalFuelBlown fuel pump fuseOn the Renault Captur II and Clio V with the 1.3 TCe engine, a 20-amp fuse can blow and leave the car without an engine. According to L'argus, in April 2021 this fault still had no factory fix; the official service centre's diagnosis includes checking, and sometimes replacing, the catalytic converter.
- Medium severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalInjectionUnstable idle, juddering and stalling caused by the injectorsOn 1.3 TCe/DIG-T engines built before April 2019, the injector seal may be missing or its housing incorrectly sized, which causes an unstable idle, juddering and stalling. Renault-Nissan corrected it at the factory in 2019; the repair involves replacing injectors or, in serious cases, the cylinder head.
- Medium severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalTimingTiming phaser faultA fault in the camshaft phaser can turn on the injection warning light and sometimes cause a loss of power in the 1.3 TCe/DIG-T. Renault-Nissan corrected it at the factory in February 2021; the repair involves checking the solenoid valves and, if necessary, replacing oil control valves.
