Renault EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch): DC4/EDC6 de Getrag and EDC7Urgency: Garage soon
Sudden loss of power (limp mode) in the EDC gearbox: causes
In the EDC gearbox, 1 documented fault may be the cause: EDC gearbox overheating and safety neutral.[1]
- High severity: EDC gearbox overheating and safety neutral
What to do now
Garage soon
Drive carefully to a safe place. Switching off and restarting may bring the power back temporarily, but the cause is still there: have it diagnosed.
What it means
The ECU limits power and engine speed to protect the engine or the gearbox when it detects a serious anomaly: turbo pressure, temperature, oil pressure or fuel. The car keeps moving, but without any pull.
Gearbox faults that cause it
From most to least important. Under each fault, how the symptom shows up. Check the affected years and versions on each page.
How much it can cost
Other common causes: limp mode
Besides the documented faults of the EDC, these are the most common causes on any car according to the sources.
- Dirty or faulty EGR valve[3][4][5][6]Common
- Faulty turbo or incorrect boost pressure[3][4][5][7][8]Common
- Faulty air mass meter[3][4]Common
- Sensors that are dirty, damaged or have stopped sending information[3][4][9]Possible
- Blocked particulate filter[10]Possible
- Other anomalies monitored by the control unit (clutch, brakes, fluids)[11]Uncommon
What to check first
- Look at the colour of the warning light. According to Autopista and Yamovil, with an orange light you can continue with caution, without demanding power from the engine, to the garage; if it is red, stop as soon as possible.[3][4]
- Avoid asking for power from the engine and do not push the car: RACE warns that with a major loss of power, a red warning light, overheating, strange noises or protection mode, you must not force the engine.[4][10]
- If the car goes back to normal behaviour when you stop and restart it, do not treat it as solved: Autopista warns that the fault will still be recorded.[3][4]
- Have the codes read with diagnostic equipment at a garage. Autopista recommends this check, and a code such as P0299 indicates, for example, that the turbo is not reaching the desired pressure.[3][7]

Limp mode in the EDC: is it serious?
Urgency: garage soon. Drive carefully to a safe place. Switching off and restarting may bring the power back temporarily, but the cause is still there: have it diagnosed. The most serious fault that causes it on this engine has high severity.
