2.0 DTI and 2.2 DTI engine: faults and reliability

Opel/Vauxhall 2.0 DTI and 2.2 DTI (X20DTH/Y20DTH/Y22DTR) · Opel and Vauxhall

The 2.0 DTI and 2.2 DTI (X20DTH/Y20DTH and Y22DTR) are the direct-injection diesels with a Bosch VP44 pump that Opel fitted between 1997 and 2005 to the Astra G, Vectra B and C, Zafira A, Signum and Omega B. German Wikipedia documents recurring VP44 pump and air mass meter failures in its early years, and a German used-car buying guide singles out the EGR valve as its main weak point even once the engine had matured, in the Vectra C.[1][2]

Which 2.0 DTI and 2.2 DTI versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • 2.0 DTI 100-101 hp (X20DTH/Y20DTH, 1,995 cc, 1997-2005)

    1997–2005 · 100–101 hp · X20DTH, Y20DTH

    With caution

It shares the VP44 injection pump and the recurring air mass meter and turbo failures documented in the early years of this engine, as well as the EGR valve risk common to the whole DTI family.[1][2]

  • 2.2 DTI 120-125 hp (Y22DTR, 2,172 cc, 2000-2005)

    2000–2005 · 120–125 hp · Y22DTR

    With caution

In addition to the EGR valve risk, there are testimonies of a seized turbo in urban use and of a leak at the manifold gasket; no manufacturer campaign to correct them is on record.[7][8]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

What the 2.0 DTI and 2.2 DTI is

The 2.0 DTI and 2.2 DTI are four-cylinder direct-injection diesels (hence the «DTi» initials, from Direkteinspritzung) using an electronically controlled Bosch VP44 rotary pump, well before the common-rail systems that Opel would introduce later with the CDTI. The engine code changes with the emissions standard: X20DTH (1997-2000, Euro 2) and Y20DTH (2000-2005, Euro 3) for the 1,995 cc, 100-101 hp 2.0 DTI, and Y22DTR for the 2,172 cc, 120-125 hp 2.2 DTI, with a variable-geometry turbo (VTG) in its more powerful version. The timing is chain-driven, described in the technical documentation we consulted as «wartungsfrei» (maintenance-free).[1][6][9]

In Spain it was sold mainly in the Opel Astra G (1998-2004) and the Zafira A (1999-2005) with the 2.0 DTI, and in the Vectra B (1995-2002), the Vectra C (2002-2008, only in its early years) and the Signum (2003-2008, only in its early years) with both engine sizes; the Omega B (1994-2003), Opel's large saloon of the period, also used it in its final years. From 2003-2005 these engines were gradually replaced by the common-rail 1.9 CDTI and 2.0/2.2 CDTI diesels.[3][4][5][9][10]

German Wikipedia notes that, in its early years on sale in the Vectra B, this engine suffered recurring failures of the VP44 injection pump and the air mass meter, as well as turbo and oil consumption problems, although it describes the block itself as «robust and durable». A German used-car buying guide focused on the Vectra C, with the engine by then more mature, describes it as practically as reliable as the later 1.9 CDTI, with the EGR valve as the only weakness noted.[1][2]

What changed between versions

  1. 1997–2005

    2.0 DTI 100-101 hp (X20DTH/Y20DTH, 1,995 cc, 1997-2005)

The entry-level engine of the DTI diesel range: it debuted as the X20DTH (Euro 2) in 1997 and was renamed Y20DTH (Euro 3) from 2000 after the change in emissions rules, without any significant change in power (100-101 hp).[1]

  2. 2000–2005

    2.2 DTI 120-125 hp (Y22DTR, 2,172 cc, 2000-2005)

The version with greater displacement and power, with a variable-geometry turbo (VTG): 125 hp in the main European tune and 88 kW/120 hp in the export version with the same mechanicals. It arrived in August 2000 and was the entry-level diesel of the Vectra C at its 2002 launch, before Opel replaced it with the common-rail 1.9 CDTI.[1][10]
