Problems with brake calipers and discs: symptoms, cost and affected models
We have documented 94 faults with brake calipers and discs in 94 cars. The most important by severity and frequency: rear brake discs poorly seated on the hub (early 2025 batch) (Citroën Jumpy III), G 63 AMG rear brake caliper brackets that may crack, reducing braking (December 2017 to April 2018) (Mercedes-Benz Clase G W463) and front brake caliper bracket not stable enough, with reduced braking capacity (February and March 2021) (Mercedes-Benz Clase V W447).
How it works and why it fails
Brake calipers, discs and pads
Calipers squeeze the pads against the discs (or the shoes against the drums) to brake. On cars that are little used or in damp climates, the rear calipers seize and the discs rust; on other models, the discs warp or wear more than usual.
What to do
If the car pulls to one side when braking, a wheel smells of burning or is much hotter than the others, or you feel vibration in the pedal, have the brakes checked. Use the car regularly and brake firmly now and then to clear rust from the discs.
