ZF 6HP gearbox: faults and reliability

ZF 6HP (caja automática de convertidor de par, 6 velocidades) · BMW, Audi, Land Rover and Jaguar

The ZF 6HP is the six-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox that ZF built between 2000 and 2014, fitted by BMW (Steptronic), Audi (tiptronic, in the A6 and A8 quattro), Jaguar and Land Rover, before handing over to the ZF 8HP. It has a reputation for lasting a lot of kilometres, but with age it accumulates jerking, valve body and mechatronic faults, leaks and a controversy over the "lifetime" oil, which several workshops advise changing earlier.[1][2][3][4][5]

Which ZF 6HP versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • 1st generation (6HP19/26/32, 2000-2006)

    2000–2006 · 6HP19, 6HP19A, 6HP26, 6HP26A, 6HP26X, 6HP26Z, 6HP32, 6HP32A

    With caution

Cars with this first generation are now around 20-26 years old in 2026 and often accumulate the same weak points as the whole 6HP family (jerking, valve body or mechatronic faults), documented on BMW, Audi and Land Rover; check the gearbox oil change history before buying.[2][3][5]

  • 2nd generation (6HP21/28/32, 2007-2014)

    2007–2014 · 6HP21, 6HP28, 6HP28X, 6HP32, 6HP32A

    With caution

The 2007 revision did not eliminate the family's weak points: jerking and mechatronic faults are still documented on cars with this version, and Jaguar ended up replacing the 6HP with the ZF 8HP on the XF as early as 2012. It is still worth checking the gearbox service history before buying.[4][6][7]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

Known faults of the ZF 6HP

Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).

  1. 1High severityCommonFrequency: CommonElectronicsValve body and mechatronic failure: erratic shifts or a locked-up gearboxYes, and it can be serious: there are documented failures of the ZF 6HP valve body or mechatronic unit on BMW, Audi and Land Rover models from around 90,000-100,000 km, with cases that go as far as preventing a gear from engaging (including reverse) and dealer quotes of €6,000 to €10,000.Repair: €6,000–€10,000Appears at around 90,000 km
  2. 2Medium severityCommonFrequency: CommonTransmissionJerking and harsh shifts from converter wear and ageing oilYes: on BMW, Audi and Land Rover models with the ZF 6HP there are reports of jerking, hesitation and harsh shifts from 80,000-150,000 km, especially if the gearbox oil has never been changed. The converter locks up in all six gears to save fuel, which speeds up its wear over the years.Repair (garage): €150–€400Appears at around 80,000 km
  3. 3Medium severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalLubricationOil leaks from the sump or the gearbox sealsYes, although in a minority of cases: there are reports of ZF 6HP gearbox oil leaks on the BMW X5 (at 180,000 km) and the Audi A6 (between 204,000 and 208,000 km). If not repaired, the loss of pressure can speed up internal wear and lead to valve body or mechatronic failure.Repair (garage): €300–€600Appears at around 180,000 km

What the ZF 6HP is

ZF Friedrichshafen developed the 6HP at its plant in Saarbrücken (Germany) and presented it in 2000 as the first six-speed automatic gearbox on the market in a production car. It was built until 2014, with more than 7 million units produced, before gradually giving way to the ZF 8HP.[1]

It is a longitudinal torque-converter gearbox with Lepelletier planetary gear sets (not a dual-clutch), with variants according to engine torque: the 6HP19 for the smaller engines, the 6HP26 as the standard variant, the 6HP21/6HP28 revision from 2007 and the 6HP32 for the highest-torque engines. The converter locks up in all six gears to reduce fuel consumption, and ZF sold the oil as "lifetime" in a sump sealed at the factory.[1]

Each manufacturer markets it under its own name: BMW calls it Steptronic, and Audi fits it under the name tiptronic in the higher-torque quattro versions of its longitudinal models, such as the A6 and A8; Jaguar and Land Rover simply offer it as an automatic gearbox. One exception to bear in mind is the first-generation Audi Q7: although it is also marketed as "Tiptronic" and shares a platform with the Volkswagen Touareg, its standard automatic gearbox is an Aisin/VW six-speed (TR-60SN), not a ZF 6HP, so we do not include it among the applications on this page.[1][8][9][10]

In general it has a reputation for lasting a lot of kilometres, but with age it accumulates the same weak points across several brands: jerking and harsh shifts from wear on the converter locked in all gears, valve body and solenoid faults that can go so far as to prevent a gear from engaging, and a controversy around the "lifetime" oil which, combined with a factory-sealed sump, has caused catastrophic failures in some cases, widespread enough that the Volkswagen Group extended the warranty to 100,000 miles or 10 years on cars fitted with this gearbox.[1]

What changed between versions

  1. 2000–2006

    1st generation (6HP19/26/32, 2000-2006)

First generation of the gearbox, with variants according to engine torque: the 6HP19 for the smaller engines, the 6HP26 as the standard variant for most six-cylinder engines, and the 6HP32 for the highest-torque engines. It replaced the five-speed automatic gearboxes at BMW, Audi, Jaguar and Land Rover.[1]

  2. 2007–2014

    2nd generation (6HP21/28/32, 2007-2014)

ZF revised the gearbox in 2007 with the 6HP21 and 6HP28 variants, without changing the basic architecture of the torque converter and Lepelletier planetary gear sets; it coexists with the higher-capacity 6HP32 until the end of production around 2014, when the ZF 8HP family gradually replaced it depending on the manufacturer and model.[1]
