ZF 8HP gearbox: faults and reliability

ZF 8HP (caja automática de convertidor de par, 8 velocidades) · BMW, Audi, Jaguar, Land Rover, Alfa Romeo and Jeep

The ZF 8HP is an 8-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox, launched in 2008 in the BMW 7 Series and later adopted by BMW, Audi ('tiptronic'), Jaguar, Land Rover, Alfa Romeo and Jeep. It has a reputation for being reliable, although it accumulates jerking that sometimes calls for reprogramming the control unit, occasional mechatronic failures and leaks from the sump gaskets; the oil is sold as 'lifetime', but several garages advise changing it earlier.[1][2][3][4][5]

Which ZF 8HP versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • 1st generation (2008-2013)

    2008–2013 · 8HP45, 8HP55, 8HP65, 8HP70, 8HP90

    With caution

Cars with this first generation are now around 13-18 years old in 2026; on the BMW 5 Series (F10) there are documented cases of failed mechatronics and of being unable to engage reverse after 120,000-130,000 km, so it is worth checking the gearbox's service history before buying.[2]

  • 2nd generation (2014-2017)

    2014–2017 · 8HP50, 8HP70, 8HP75, 845RE

    Buy

It is the most widespread version and the one with the most known mileage: in the analyses of several models (BMW X3, BMW X5, Audi A6) gearbox faults are a minority of the total accounts, although occasional jerking is still documented and, less often, mechatronic faults or leaks. It is worth checking the history, but there is no systemic defect that argues against buying.[3][6][7]

  • 3rd generation, with electrification (from 2018)

    since 2018 · 8HP51, 8HP76, 8HP95, 850RE

    With caution

There is less accumulated mileage and fewer accounts than with the earlier versions, and on plug-in hybrid models there are added electronic warnings shared between the engine and the gearbox that complicate diagnosis. There are no known systemic defects, but there is less track record to confirm it.[8]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

Known faults of the ZF 8HP

Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).

  1. 1High severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalElectronicsMechatronic failure as the gearbox ages (sometimes with reverse)Yes, although in a minority of cases: there are documented ZF 8HP mechatronic failures on BMW after 120,000-130,000 km, costing €1,400 to €3,500, and also control unit or electronic selector faults on Audi and Land Rover.Repair: €1,400–€3,500
  2. 2Medium severityCommonFrequency: CommonTransmissionJerking and hesitation when changing gear, sometimes needing reprogrammingYes: on BMW, Audi, Jaguar and Alfa Romeo there are accounts of jerking, hesitation or harsh shifts with the ZF 8HP. It is usually due to ageing oil or the calibration of the mechatronics, and the dealer often fixes it -not always first time- by reprogramming the gearbox control unit.
  3. 3Medium severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalLubricationOil leaks from the gearbox gaskets or sumpYes: on the BMW 1 Series and the Jaguar F-Pace there are accounts of oil leaks from the ZF 8HP gearbox gaskets, in one case already at 40,000 km. If it is not repaired soon, the loss of pressure can speed up internal wear and lead to the jerking or mechatronic failure of the related faults.Repair (garage): €1,000–€2,000

What the ZF 8HP is

ZF Friedrichshafen designed the 8HP at its Saarbrücken plant (Germany) and launched it in 2008 in the BMW 7 Series (F01) 760Li, with the V12 engine. Since then it has reached more than twenty brands -including BMW, Audi, Jaguar, Land Rover, Alfa Romeo, Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, Porsche, Bentley, Rolls-Royce and Lamborghini- and ZF calculates that by 2023 more than 15 million units had been built.[1]

It is a longitudinal torque-converter gearbox with planetary gearsets, not a dual-clutch: it uses four planetary gear groups, two brakes and three clutches to provide eight ratios, with gear changes taking only two tenths of a second. It should not be confused with the ZF 9HP, a transverse gearbox for front-wheel-drive models (Jeep Compass, Renegade or Cherokee, among others), nor with the Aisin EAT6/EAT8 used by the PSA/Stellantis group: they are different designs and manufacturers, even though all three are torque-converter automatics.[1]

Each manufacturer markets it under its own name: BMW calls it Steptronic (or Steptronic 8), Audi reserves it for the higher-torque quattro versions of its longitudinal models (A4, A6, Q5...) and calls it tiptronic to distinguish it from its S tronic dual-clutch gearboxes, and Chrysler/Jeep build it under licence in Kokomo (Indiana, USA) since 2013 as the TorqueFlite 8, with internal references such as 845RE or 850RE. BMW was its first and main customer and rolled it out across its rear-wheel-drive and xDrive range from around 2010-2012; Jaguar, Land Rover, Alfa Romeo (Giulia) and Jeep (Grand Cherokee) adopted it later, between 2014 and 2016.[1][2][5][9][10]

In reliability analyses based on owner accounts, the ZF 8HP usually comes out well compared with other automatics: in the BMW 5 Series (F10) it is described as 'one of the best elements' of the car, and in the BMW X5 (F15) no gearbox fault was recorded among 56 accounts collected. Even so, with years and mileage the same weak points appear across several brands: jerking that sometimes requires reprogramming the control unit, mechatronic and valve body failures, and oil leaks from the sump gaskets -made worse because the manufacturer presents the oil as 'lifetime'-.[2][3]

What changed between versions

  1. 2008–2013

    1st generation (2008-2013)

First generation of the gearbox, with variants for torques from around 450 to around 1,000 Nm (8HP45 to 8HP90). It debuted in 2008 in the BMW 7 Series 760Li and quickly spread to the rest of the BMW rear-wheel-drive and xDrive range, and to the higher-powered quattro versions of Audi.[1]

  2. 2014–2017

    2nd generation (2014-2017)

Generation with which the gearbox reaches Jaguar, Land Rover, Alfa Romeo (Giulia) and Jeep (Grand Cherokee, as the 845RE under Chrysler licence), while BMW and Audi were already using it across the board. It adds torque variants and software adjustments without changing the gearbox's basic architecture.[1][9][10]

  3. since 2018

3rd generation, with electrification (from 2018)

Adds mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions -for example, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport P400e- and new higher-torque variants for high-performance engines; Jeep calls it the 850RE on the Grand Cherokee from 2018.[1][8][10]
