Renault EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch): DC4/EDC6 de Getrag and EDC7Dual-clutch gearbox (DSG, EDC, PowerShift...)Gearbox mechatronic unit
Control electronics fault: "check gearbox" warning and loss of gears on the EDC
Why this rating?
High severity: Risk of a serious engine, turbo or gearbox failure.
Frequency occasional: There is no official manufacturer campaign for this fault, but it recurs in several independent, well-documented cases: an L'Argus forum thread gathers testimonies from several owners between 2021 and 2023 with the same symptom (only the odd gears engage) and the same diagnosis of a faulty clutch position switch, and fiches-auto reports similar testimonies of sensor and mechatronic unit failures in other models. It is the same family of fault, EDC gearbox control electronics, independently documented for the Renault Captur in its own fault page.[1][2]
Symptoms
- Gearbox fault warning on the dashboard ("check gearbox" or equivalent).[1][2]Gearbox warning: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- The gears associated with one of the two clutches stop engaging; in the case documented on the L'Argus forum, only the odd gears (1st, 3rd, 5th) engaged and not the even ones.[1]Gears will not engage: other faults that cause it · As soon as possible
- Some owners describe a slight whistle or hum before the fault warning appears.[2]Gearbox noise: other faults that cause it · Monitor
Why it happens
A technician who replied in the L'Argus forum thread identified the cause as the position switch ("manocontact") of one of the two clutches, which stops reliably informing the gearbox control unit; the diagnostic code recorded in that case corresponded to the clutch 2 manocontact circuit.[1]
Fiches-auto describes more generally failures of sensors and of the control electronics themselves (mechatronic unit) that prevent the EDC gearbox from selecting gears properly, with no single defective-part pattern.[2]
If it is not repaired: While the fault is active, the car loses the gears associated with the faulty clutch, in the documented case all the even gears and probably reverse, which means taking it to a garage; the technician consulted on the forum recommended also replacing the other clutch's switch as a preventive measure, as it is a part of the same type and age.[1]
Affected cars and years
The best-documented case relates to a 6-speed EDC gearbox, but the mechanism (failure of the position sensor or switch of one of the two clutches) is not tied by design to a specific number of speeds, so we do not rule out that it also affects the EDC7.[1]
| Version | Years | Codes |
|---|---|---|
| EDC6 (6-speed: DC4 dry or DW6 wet) | since 2010 | DC4DW6 |
| EDC7 (7-speed, wet clutch, DW5) | since 2016 | DW5 |

How much it costs to repair
Includes: Diagnosis with a compatible reader and replacement of the faulty clutch position switch or sensor (manocontact), or of the complete mechatronic unit if the fault runs deeper.[1]
We have not found published prices in Spain; the case documented on the L'Argus forum does not include an invoice or a figure in euros.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs
How to check for it before buying a used car
- Ask for a diagnosis with a compatible reader and check whether there are stored codes related to the clutch position switches, even if no warning light is on at that moment.[1]
- Try reverse and upshifts and downshifts several times, cold and warm, to check that no gears are missing.[1]
- Check with the VIN at an authorised dealer whether there are outstanding software updates for the gearbox.
Parts needed
The part or kit that fixes this fault, according to the sources.
- Buy part at Autodoc (affiliate link, opens in a new tab)
Clutch position switch/sensor (manocontact)[1]
Tells the gearbox control unit the position of each of the two clutches; its failure causes the loss of the gears associated with that clutch.
- Buy part at Autodoc (affiliate link, opens in a new tab)
Mechatronic unit / EDC gearbox control unit[2]
Manages clutch actuation and gear selection; replaced when the fault is not limited to a specific sensor or switch.

How to prevent it
- There is no known way to prevent failure of the clutch position switch beyond normal driving: the documented cases point to a design weak point or wear of the part, not to a lack of maintenance.[1]
Recalls, campaigns and claims
As of 27 September 2026, we have no record of recalls, campaigns or extended manufacturer warranties for this fault. Check with an official dealer using the chassis (VIN) number: they will tell you whether the car has any outstanding campaign.
What owners say
Frequently asked questions
What does the "check gearbox" warning mean on an EDC?
It means the gearbox control unit has detected an anomaly, often in the switch or sensor that reports the position of one of the two clutches; while the warning is active it is common to lose the gears associated with that clutch.[1][2]
Why do only the even gears or reverse fail?
Because a dual-clutch gearbox splits the gears between two independent input shafts, one for even gears and reverse and one for odd gears; if the sensor or clutch of one of the two shafts fails, only the gears on that side are lost.[1]
Do both switches need replacing even if only one fails?
A technician consulted on the L'Argus forum recommends it as a preventive measure, since both switches are the same part and the same age, although it is not compulsory if the other one still works normally.[1]

Other EDC faults
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalTransmissionEDC gearbox overheating and safety neutralYes: several owners document that the EDC gearbox can drop into neutral or lose its gears when it overheats under sustained load, and Renault even updated the EDC7 (DW5) gearbox software of the first Mégane IV GT cars because the overheating increased the risk of an accident.Repair (garage): €2,100
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonClutchPremature dry clutch wear and low-speed judder (EDC6/DC4)Yes: the dry-clutch EDC6 (DC4) is known for juddering and running roughly at low speed, and its clutch wears out sooner than one in a wet gearbox; several owners document clutch and complete gearbox replacements across different Renault models since 2010.
- High severityFrequency: RareLubricationOil leak from the EDC output shaft sealOne documented case (Renault Captur 1.2 TCe 120, failure at 48,000 km) describes an oil leak from the output shaft seal ("joint spy") of the EDC gearbox that ended in a complete automatic gearbox failure; we have not found other cases with the same exact diagnosis.

- High severityFrequency: Very frequentDSG7 DQ200Mechatronic unit failure: pressure accumulator, pump and cracked housingYes: the mechatronic unit is the DQ200's most cited weak point. Its pressure accumulator and hydraulic pump can fail because of a housing design defect, with fault warnings, limp mode or loss of drive; Volkswagen has acknowledged the problem with service actions and software updates.Repair (garage): €600–€2,200
- High severityFrequency: Very frequentPowerShiftJuddering, hesitation and slipping of the dry clutch (DPS6)Yes: the dry-clutch DPS6 judders, hesitates when pulling away and slips in a very large number of cars. Ford revised the clutch and software at least six times without fully solving it, and in the US a 2020 court settlement covered close to 600,000 Ford Fiesta and Focus cars.
- High severityFrequency: Very frequentPowerShiftClutch pressure plate breakage (2018 and 2019 recalls on the Focus and C-MAX)Ford recalled the Focus III and C-MAX II with the Powershift gearbox over the risk of the clutch pressure plate breaking, in two successive campaigns (2018 and 2019) covering vehicles built between August 2012 and May 2018.
- High severityFrequency: Very frequentFord C-Max IIClutch pressure plate breakage in the PowerShift automatic gearboxThe PowerShift automatic gearbox, a dry dual-clutch unit with no torque converter, had two successive Ford campaigns on the C-MAX II for the risk of the clutch pressure plate breaking, which between them cover vehicles built from 2012 to 2018. Owners also document numerous clutch replacements out of warranty, some before 100,000 km.
- High severityFrequency: Very frequentFord Fiesta VIIJudder and clutch slip in the Powershift (DPS6) automatic gearboxThe Powershift (DPS6) automatic gearbox, a dry dual-clutch unit, has attracted many complaints of judder when pulling away, hesitation and clutch slip. Ford revised the clutch and software several times, and in 2020 a US court settlement also covered the Fiesta (2011-2016) alongside the Focus. In Spain it was sold with the 1.0 EcoBoost engine.
- High severityFrequency: Very frequentFord Focus IIIJudder and clutch slip in the PowerShift automatic gearboxThe PowerShift automatic gearbox (DPS6), a dry dual-clutch unit with no torque converter, has piled up numerous complaints of judder when pulling away, vibration and clutch slip. Ford applied several clutch and software revisions, and in the US it reached a court settlement covering around 600,000 Focus and Fiesta owners.
