Car pulls to one side or steering wheel is not straight: causes and the faults that trigger it
According to RACE, if on a level, straight road with no wind you have to correct the steering to stop the car drifting, or the steering wheel sits crooked when driving straight, the most common cause is that the steering geometry (tracking) is out of adjustment because of potholes, knocks against kerbs or worn ball joints and silentblocks. Uneven tyre pressures, a badly distributed load or a brake that doesn't release can also cause it.[1][2][3][4]
28 documented faults cause it in 28 cars. The most important:
- High severity: Seized rear brakes and brake pipe corrosion · Opel Zafira A
- Critical severity: Instability in corners at high speed: suspension and rear spoiler recall · Audi TT I
- Critical severity: Front lower arm to knuckle bolt incorrectly tightened (2016 recall) · Land Rover Range Rover Evoque I
What it means
If the car pulls to one side with the wheel straight, or the wheel sits crooked when driving in a straight line, there may be an alignment problem, an under-inflated tyre, a brake caliper that is not releasing or damaged suspension parts.
General explanation from MotorFiable. How it shows up in each engine, with sources, is in the list of faults.
What to do now
Garage soon
Check the tyre pressures first. If the problem continues, ask for a suspension inspection and a wheel alignment; if it also smells of burning after braking, have the calipers checked.
Most common causes
From most to least likely according to the sources. Under each cause, the part and the related OBD codes.
1. Alignment (tracking) out of adjustment
Common causeRACE places it after impacts with kerbs, deep potholes or small knocks, and as a result of wear over time. The symptoms are the car drifting and forcing you to correct, an off-centre steering wheel, uneven tyre wear and, sometimes, vibrations. Autofácil lists drifting off course among the symptoms of geometry outside its limits.[1][2][5]
2. Uneven tyre pressure or badly distributed load
Common causeRACE links the drift to parking against the kerb, to incorrect tyre pressures or to an uneven load, and recommends checking the pressure at least once a month.[4][6]
3. Ball joints and silentblocks with play
Possible causeRACE lists pulling to one side among the symptoms of a worn ball joint and explains that ball joints and silentblocks (suspension bushes) that have lost their firmness shift the wheel angles. Autofácil recommends checking the ball joints first because with excessive play a good alignment is pointless.[1][7][8]
4. Brake caliper that doesn't release
Possible causeRACE says that a caliper seized by a split dust boot, ungreased guides or old fluid keeps the disc clamped, brakes unevenly and heats up the assembly. For RACE, pulling when braking or noticing one wheel that is hotter should lead to a brake check.[3][6]
5. Unevenly worn tyres
Possible causeRACE and Autofácil link wear on just one edge with incorrect alignment, and RACE advises checking it when the car drifts or the steering wheel sits crooked in a straight line.[5][6]
Depending on what you notice
I loosen my grip on the steering wheel and the car drifts to one side
This is the test RACE describes for tracking: on a safe, level road, if the car drifts to one side instead of going straight, check the alignment and tyre wear.[2]
The steering wheel is crooked when I drive straight
RACE cites it as a symptom of misalignment and, together with the drift and uneven wear, invites you to check the geometry and look for play in the ball joints or silentblocks.[1][6]
The car only pulls to one side when braking
RACE explains that a dragging brake brakes less on one side and recommends checking the brakes if the car pulls when braking or a wheel gets hotter than normal.[3][6]
What to check first
- Check the pressure of all four tyres when cold against the manufacturer's values and that the load is evenly distributed.[4][6]
- Look at the tyre wear, including the inner side: wear on a single edge points to the geometry.[2][6]
- After braking normally, carefully check whether one wheel is much hotter than the others or whether the car pulls when braking.[3][6]
- Ask a garage to check the ball joints and silentblocks before aligning, because with play the alignment won't hold.[1][8]
- Have the alignment done to the manufacturer's angles; RACE specifies that at a garage only the tracking is adjusted.[2][5]
Can I keep driving?
Urgency: Garage soon
RACE does not say the drift stops you driving, but warns that driving out of alignment lengthens braking distances, slows emergency manoeuvres, increases the risk of aquaplaning and wears tyres and fuel; if there is also play in the steering or a dragging caliper, go to the garage sooner. A completely seized caliper keeps a wheel braked and the car cannot move forward. The sources do not set a kilometre limit.[1][3]

Frequently asked questions
Why does my car pull to one side?
RACE points first to an alignment out of adjustment because of potholes, kerbs or wear, and reminds readers that uneven tyre pressure or an uneven load can give the same symptom. Ball joints, silentblocks and a dragging brake are other causes it cites.[1][4][6]
Why is the steering wheel crooked when I drive straight?
RACE cites it among the symptoms of out-of-adjustment geometry, along with the car drifting and uneven tyre wear. To correct it, the steering must be aligned at a garage to the manufacturer's angles.[1][2]
How much does it cost to align the car?
RACE and Autofácil put the alignment at about €40 in Spain, rising to €40-90 when it is done after replacing a ball joint, according to RACE. It depends on the garage and the car.[2][5][7]
Can a dragging brake make the car pull?
Yes. RACE explains that a seized caliper brakes less on one side, heats up the assembly and, if it locks up completely, keeps the wheel braked. It asks for the brakes to be checked if the car pulls when braking.[3][6]
Is it dangerous to drive with the car out of alignment?
RACE warns that it increases braking distance, slows emergency manoeuvres and raises the risk of aquaplaning, besides wearing tyres and using more fuel; it should be aligned as soon as possible.[1]
