P0263 on Toyota: causes and affected engines

P0263 means: cylinder 1 contribution/balance.[1][2][3][4] Toyota has 5 documented faults that can trigger it, across 5 engines, including 1.4 HDi, 1.4 D-4D, 2.0/2.2 D-4D and 1.2 Turbo. Only a diagnosis can confirm the cause on your car.

Documented faults in Toyota engines that can trigger P0263

Grouped by engine or model, from most to least important. These are faults with the injectors and with the ignition coils: not all of them will necessarily set the code, and only a diagnosis confirms the cause on your car.

Common causes of P0263 on any make

From most to least likely, according to the sources.

  1. 1Faulty cylinder 1 injector: dirty, stuck, leaking or delivering an incorrect flow. This is the first cause for Autodoc Club and AutoDTCs, and CarParts.com also cites it.[1][3][5]
  2. 2Injector electrical problems: damaged wiring, loose or corroded connectors.[1][3][5]
  3. 3Low compression in that cylinder or an internal mechanical engine fault: worn piston rings, a burnt or leaking valve, a head gasket. AutoDTCs also cites valvetrain faults, such as a worn camshaft lobe, a collapsed tappet or a valve out of tolerance.[3][5]
  4. 4Poor fuel supply: faulty pump or insufficient pressure, clogged filter, restricted lines, contaminated fuel or air in the circuit.[1][5]

What to check first

The first diagnostic steps, from the most likely and cheapest to check to the most expensive.

  1. 1Read the code and the freeze-frame data with a scan tool and see whether other codes are stored: for other cylinders, for the same cylinder's injector circuit or for misfires.[4][5]
  2. 2Check the cheapest things: the connectors and wiring of the cylinder 1 injector (corrosion, damage, play) and the vacuum hoses or any unmetered air intrusion.[1][3][5]
  3. 3With the scan tool, run a cylinder balance test to confirm that it is cylinder 1 that is consistently performing worse.[5]

Frequently asked questions

Which Toyota engines have faults that can trigger P0263?

1.4 HDi (1 fault), 1.4 D-4D (1 fault), 2.0/2.2 D-4D (1 fault), 1.2 Turbo (1 fault) and 1.6 Dual VVT-i (1 fault). Each fault has its own page with the affected years and versions, the symptoms and the repair cost.

What does code P0263 mean on a Toyota?

Cylinder 1 contribution/balance. The ECU has detected that cylinder 1 is performing worse than the others: for the engine to run well, all cylinders must contribute similar power. According to TaT, it detects this by monitoring variations in crankshaft speed. AutoDTCs, on its P0266 page (which describes the same mechanism for cylinder 2), explains that crankshaft acceleration is measured during each cylinder's stroke and that the code is set when that cylinder's contribution falls outside the calibrated parameters. It is a generic OBD-II code: it means the same on a Toyota as on any other make.[1][2][3][4][5]

Can I keep driving with P0263?

Garage soon. The sources agree that it must be repaired soon, without being an emergency. Autodoc Club allows short trips but does not recommend it, because a faulty injector can damage the engine and the catalytic converter. AutoDTCs classes it as moderate severity and says it normally does not leave you stranded; on its P0266 page it adds that it is not an immediate safety risk, but that a weak cylinder means loss of power and vibration, and that driving for a long time can worsen mechanical damage and consumption. CarParts.com does not state a severity.[1][4][5]
