2.0/2.2 D-4D engine: faults and reliability

Toyota 2.0 / 2.2 D-4D (1AD-FTV, 2AD-FTV, 2AD-FHV) · Toyota and Lexus

No: the 2.0/2.2 D-4D family is among the most problematic Toyota diesels. The 2.2 block (2AD-FTV and 2AD-FHV D-CAT) has a large number of cases of warped cylinder head gaskets and oil consumption or dilution in the Avensis, RAV4, Auris, Corolla Verso and Verso; the EGR valve and injectors fail frequently across the whole family, and the D-CAT filter clogs up if the car is not driven regularly on open roads.[1][2][3][4]

Which 2.0/2.2 D-4D versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • 2.0 D-4D (1AD-FTV, 116-126 hp, 2005-2018)

    2005–2018 · 116–126 hp · 1AD-FTV

    With caution

It has documented EGR valve and injector faults as frequent as the 2.2, but head gasket and oil dilution cases are proportionally far fewer in the sources consulted; check the EGR and injector history before buying.[1][10]

  • 2.2 D-4D (2AD-FTV, 136-150 hp, 2005-2015)

    2005–2015 · 136–150 hp · 2AD-FTV

    Avoid

Several generations and different models (Avensis, RAV4, Auris, Corolla Verso, Verso) repeatedly document head gasket problems, oil consumption or dilution, and EGR and injector faults in this 2.2-litre block; have a specialist workshop check it thoroughly before buying.[1][2][3][4][10][11][12]

  • 2.2 D-4D D-CAT (2AD-FHV, 174-177 hp, 2005-2015)

    2005–2015 · 174–177 hp · 2AD-FHV

    Avoid

This is the version the sources most consistently describe as the most problematic of the whole diesel range of these models, with head gasket, EGR, injector and D-CAT filter clogging faults documented in practically every car that used it.[2][10][11]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

Known faults of the 2.0/2.2 D-4D

Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).

  1. 1Critical severityVery frequentFrequency: Very frequentCylinder head and blockWarped cylinder head gasket and oil consumption on the 2.2 D-4DYes: the 2.2-litre block (2AD-FTV and 2AD-FHV D-CAT) has numerous documented cases of warped cylinder head gaskets and oil consumption or dilution in the Avensis, RAV4, Auris, Corolla Verso and Verso, with repairs that sometimes require replacing the engine.Appears at around 40,000 km
  2. 2Medium severityVery frequentFrequency: Very frequentEmissions controlEGR valve clogged with sootYes: the EGR valve clogs with soot very frequently across the whole 1AD/2AD D-4D family, especially with urban use and short journeys, and it usually causes a loss of power or the engine warning light to come on.Appears at around 45,000 km
  3. 3Medium severityCommonFrequency: CommonInjectionInjector wear and failureYes: the common-rail injectors fail frequently in this family, with cases documented from 30,000 km and repairs ranging from €800 (one injector) to €1,900 (several) according to the owners consulted.Appears at around 30,000 km
  4. 4Medium severityCommonFrequency: CommonEmissions controlD-CAT particulate filter cloggingYes: the D-CAT particulate filter, and that of later versions without the badge, becomes saturated with soot if the car does not cover enough open-road miles, with the DPF warning light on and forced regenerations costing around €180 at a workshop.

What the 2.0/2.2 D-4D is

The 1AD-FTV is a 2.0-litre diesel (1,998 cc, 86 × 86 mm) and the 2AD-FTV/2AD-FHV are 2.2-litre units (2,231 cc, 86 × 96 mm); all three are inline four-cylinder engines with common-rail injection (roughly 170 to 200 MPa depending on the emissions stage), timing chain drive and compression ratios between 15.7:1 and 16.8:1. They have an EGR system with its own cooler and an oxidation catalyst as standard; the D-CAT versions add a particulate filter with an integrated NOx trap.[5]

It debuted in 2005-2006 as the replacement for the old 1CD-FTV and was fitted, in various combinations of displacement and power, to the Toyota Avensis (T25 and T27), RAV4 (XA30 and XA40), Auris (E150 and, in 2.0 form only, E180), Corolla Verso and Verso, and, with the 177 hp D-CAT badge, to the Lexus IS 220d, the first diesel in Lexus history.[5][6][7][8][9][13][14]

It is one of the lowest-rated diesel families on this website: fiches-auto.fr repeatedly documents warped cylinder head gaskets and oil consumption or dilution in the 2.2 block (2AD-FTV and 2AD-FHV) in practically every model that used it, as well as very frequent EGR valve and injector failures across the whole family, including the 2.0 (1AD-FTV). We have not found that Toyota acknowledged a specific recall or warranty extension for the head gasket or oil dilution; the rating rests on the volume and consistency of cases documented by workshops and owners, not on a manufacturer campaign.[1][2][3][4][10][11][12]

This page covers Toyota's in-house designed 1AD-FTV, 2AD-FTV and 2AD-FHV engines (2005-2018) in their main European applications. From around 2014-2015, Toyota offered in several of these models (Avensis, RAV4, Verso) an additional BMW-sourced diesel with the same D-4D commercial name but a different mechanical design; this page does not cover it. Nor does it cover the pre-2004 Corolla Verso or the conventional Corolla (E140/E170) sold outside Europe, which used other Toyota diesel engines.[4][5]

What changed between versions

  1. 2005–2018

    2.0 D-4D (1AD-FTV, 116-126 hp, 2005-2018)

This is the 2.0-litre (1,998 cc) variant of the family, with less power and torque than the 2.2. It replaced the old 1CD-FTV from 2005-2006 and continued with power tweaks (116, 122, 124, 125 or 126 hp depending on year and model) until the end of European production in 2018, adding a particulate filter in its last versions to meet Euro 5/6.[5][6][7][8][9]

  2. 2005–2015

    2.2 D-4D (2AD-FTV, 136-150 hp, 2005-2015)

This is the standard 2.2-litre variant (2,231 cc), without the D-CAT system, with power outputs from 136 to 150 hp depending on year and market. It was offered from roughly 2005 to 2015 across much of Toyota's mid-range diesel line-up.[5][6][7]

  3. 2005–2015

    2.2 D-4D D-CAT (2AD-FHV, 174-177 hp, 2005-2015)

It adds the D-CAT system (particulate filter with integrated NOx trap) and raises power to 174-177 hp; it was the most powerful option in the diesel range of these models between 2005 and 2015, and the only one to reach Lexus, in the IS 220d.[5][6][7][8][14]
